Attack animations need a rework across the board

Don't tell me about how attack animation has no bearing with attack speed, I know that. The main problem is CSing or last hitting that champ thats about to die before he is out of range with certain champs.

Take Azir for example, when you auto attack with him, animation is almost instant, and thats really good for last hitting minions and bullying your opponent, now compare this to Leblanc, Leblancs auto attack animation is about as fast as honey sliding down an upside down jar, you have to actually estimate the time it takes for her auto attack to get to the minion or champion you are going to hit.

I just feel like other champions are at an advantage and disadvantage in this category. Two ADCs with the same attack range, one with fast animation, and the other with slow animation, one will be able to hit the other first and turn and get out of range before the other has a chance to retaliate, I know this because I do it all the time with specific champs.

Either make all champion attack animations with regards to missile speed slow or fast, you can't have both.

It's part of the game, honestly. A few absurdly slow ones like Anivia have been updated to better fit the pace of the game, but normalizing attack animation speed across all champions takes out a small but unique facet of gameplay.

Not really, it doesn't help with outplay or anything like that, it literally just makes one champion more at a disadvantage than the other, if it were all normalized, then the outplay would be a much more respectful thing as both would have the same underlying basic mechanics

GaleWinUnleashed11 votes

I don't even think it's about advantages, honestly. It's just another way to make champions feel different from each other.

Yeah thats fine, the champions are different in a sense that there auto attack design is different, but the actual speed of the bullet should be the same across the boards

GaleWinUnleashed6 votes

It seems to be felt most when certain champions can walk into turret range, attack, and get out before taking aggro, while someone like Azir really can't pull that off.

Assuming Azir will ever get inside enemy tower range, to AA anybody.

Troll for Trump2 votes

It makes it different, but not in a good way.

Rather, it just makes it more annoying and necessarily difficult to play as. Karthus for example

GaleWinUnleashed2 votes

Karthus does have his Q, at least. It comes pretty close to replacing his autos entirely.

Better example is old (like season 1) fiddlesticks who didn't have the luxury of a free farm Q to rely on.

Captain Aishi2 votes

anivia's attack animation used to be so slow you could auto the enemy laner and then walk away before it hit him so you wouldn't take creep aggro... combined with her 600 range this gave her some sweet harass options early when landing Q is really hard... I kinda miss that

Why not? It's a strength (or weakness) inherent in some kits. If you think a particular champion's animation should be changed, that's a separate conversation. But there's no reason why it should be the same for every champion across the board.

Not every champion has the same auto attack range either. or the same base AD. Or the same base attack speed. Different champions have different auto attacks.

champions attack speed animations are made the way they are on purpose. Some are supposed to be good at last hitting while others are not that is a big part of how the game is balanced. You normalize autos and then you will need to make some champions kit be weaker or stronger since they now have better/worse autos

this ^^

Karthus "why hello there, topic"

The Lexer2 votes

Q is an auto attack

LankPants2 votes

If you AA as Karthus you're doing it wrong.

Starfish H4 votes

Karthus : The hell are auto attacks? Anivia Idk sounds hard.

Audiomancy4 votes

I've always thought LeBlanc's AA was really crisp in terms of animation and speed.

Compare it to something like Karthus, for example. Now that is bad.

This is a really big thing that helps differentiate champions. DOTA has something similar, but they also have a thing called turn speed. In LOL, when you click your champ instantly turns to face that direction, in DOTA every champs has a different turn speed, the speed in which they face the area click

Wyrmblade3 votes

I would rather have variety. Removing game mechanics like this can lead to a very boring and sterile game.

Are3 votes

I don't think that attack animations need to be normalized, but I do think that more upcoming champions should have shitty animations like Anivia or Swain.

Blue Moon Wolf3 votes

I do kind of wish that MonkeyKing had an animation that was more like he was actually fighting with his staff rather than smacking them with it. Basically more like this:

Less like this:

Though his crit animation needs to stay the same regardless. I love drop kicking enemies to death :p

HateDaddy2 votes

Try playing Jax lol

Half the time his auto attacks won't respond

MunchCrunchLunch2 votes

yeah some melees really have bad animations. like jax. its awful. slow as hell. also most ranged champs have bad animation. tristana. is god awful. vayne is god awful too.

however pretty much all mages but azir have bad animations.

BluePolarizer1 votes

I don't even play Jax over Yi even when he was OP, because I don't like his autoattack. Meanwhile Yi's is incredibly smooth and you can even animation cancel with it easier since the damage is at the start of his swing, so you can cancel the backswing and actually "kite" with his autoattack. It's these small mechanical tricks that make all the difference.

Yi Bencheikh2 votes

i agree with you man i used to play azir and his auto missile is so fast that you can say it is instant but champs like Jax Ashe Nasus and alot more no need to say..

Lusoka2 votes

I really feel the Nasus one. Enjoyed playing him, then he got his updated look and a new auto animation.

The Last Ballad2 votes

The reason the missile feels like it is instant is because there is no missile. If a Yasuo tries to windwall an Azir aa, he will fail, and it will hit.

YJRBqwXJcS2 votes

I actually learned how to last hit with LeBlanc

And that's why I enjoy playing her.

I gave a weird fascination with last hitting using only auto attacks if a champion doesn't benefit from shoving

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

The problem is it just feels so awkward playing different champions. Like if you give me 10 games back to back on Swain and throw me on Vel'koz or someone I will be early almost all the time due to acclimating to the slow af Swain auto.

BluePolarizer2 votes

That's kinda the point. In every single MOBA, autoattack animations are part of balance. DOTA even makes a much bigger deal out of autoattack animations, animation cancelling, etc. than League does.

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

God is it Clinks (the fire skeleton archer) that has that God awful attack animation or am I thinking of someone else? I think Medusa also is rocking a terribad one iirc.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Yep it's Clinkz. He is the carry with the worst autoattack animation but that doesn't matter because he has a 80% AS steroid, permastealth later and 50 damage on hit. Ironically, Viper is not considered as hard of a carry as Clinkz despite a far superior autoattack animation and an equally good steroid.

There's some even worse autoattack animations out there.

Toplane Fencer2 votes

This would slightly buff some characters though, which would cause a great disturbance in the game. CS'ing being hard is part of who LeBlanc is.

SpookyNeedle2 votes

I find it super easy to cs with Ravenborn Leblanc

UnbeatablePlayer2 votes

Riot made auto attack animations fast/slow based on balance. If you're not skilled enough to cs with a skillshot animation, then play a instant animation. Simple. You're talking about projectile speed and not actual animation lol

BloodyTompon2 votes

Animation or missile speed? It sounds like you mean the missile speed?

aLawfulFalafel1 votes

yeah, he does XD

KING ATTILA1 votes

Tryndamere will finish his attack animation without even doing the damage sometimes.

My Waifu Vanilla4 votes

Can't be as bad as Draven or Jinx (Rockets) not doing damage with projectiles clearly in the air because they accidently cancelled the auto.

Vorazun2 votes

Quinn too. Her auto is ridiculously easy to cancel if you aren't used to it.

Miraweave1 votes

{quoted}

Quinn too. Her auto is ridiculously was to cancel if you aren't used to it.

Especially since the motions that would properly animation cancel her normal autoattack will cancel her passive with the projectile in the air.

The Deckowner1 votes

I feel like projectile speed of many mages' aa is terribe, like I don't even bother trying to last hit with aa when I am playing Annie Anivia Veigar because the projectile is so stupidly slow, meanwhile some other champions like Azir Velkoz Thresh who have non-projectile aa and some other champions likeAurelionSol Ziggs have good aa projectile speed and it just feels so much more comfortable to cs with those champions.

Loboros2 votes

Annie is fine because she has her q, but holy shit, ANIVIA!

The Deckowner1 votes

I think the only reason annie had her Q is because her aa is so shit

A Basic Island1 votes

damn i remember when LB came out and people thought her animation was op

now it's considered a piss poor animation lolwat?

i find that highly unlikely. I mean look at fiddlesticks and ramass

Sire Hippington1 votes

I agree, atleast on animations, not so much on projectiles, though i find that to be a much bigger isues for melees, as they more often have the issue that targets get out of range duering the animation(happens really often with nauts passive vs faster opponents), and i really often abuse fast AAs top to attack an opponent while he goes for an cs and then get out of range befor they can retaliate.

Another big issue is base as. While it certainly is a scaleing factor for champions that usually will built AS an needs to be handled carefully for those, haveing low base as on champs that don't realistically get AS from other sources mostly is a chore. I mean, look at Maokai, he's one of the tanks that usually sees alot play when tanks are strong, and he has one of the highest base AS in the game. Csing and tradeing even early on feels fluid with him. Now if you play Nauti, who usually is similar strong to Mao, every succesfull cs becomes a small victory, and if two drop low at the same time, you need to use an abillity as your as is so pathetic, and mostly it just feel so clunky compared to mao. It also makes it hard to trade back vs bruisers early on as your AA dps is quite inferior, while mao can hold his ground. Same for many mages. For me, there is no reall reason to give them such low bas AS, i doubt haveing something like 0.658 instead of the usuall 0.625 would brake those champs and cause AS focused builts to happen, but it would make them feel alot more fluid early on the game.

UltraGigaNiga1 votes

Everyone is entitled to opinions so it's whatever when it comes to OP's idea but the only problem I have is the comment concerning leblanc. How is her auto attack slow? You clearly haven't played anivia/karthus/zilean.

Quepha1 votes

It's OK for champs to be different.

DeathBurst1 votes

Don't tell me about how attack animation has no bearing with attack speed, I know that.

Well, you know wrong. The speed of your animation scales with your attack speed as well, not only the timer between two consecutive attacks. A number of champs have special rules so that the 2 scalings are different for them (Kalista, Thresh, Graves, ...)

(And regarding ADC specifically, almost all of them have a pretty fast animation compared to other categories.)
