@Riot - Can we talk about the Support Item Quests now that they've been live for a bit?

I would like to know some of the statistics regarding the support item quests, now that they've been replaced with warding quests on live servers for a while now. I personally hate the changes you did, and they feel incredibly frustrating, but I'm curious to know if you are seeing more or less supports now, and if the items have hit their marks.

I miss the old relic shield active

I miss the passive too. Shield Battery was amazing. I think it was a bad rollout on Riot's part to nerf the support items without replacing the Face/Talisman/Claim as standalone items.

I just think tank supports and non healing/shielding utility supports got dicked on so hard.

So if I'm playing Braum I rush what? Locket? Ok the shield thing is actually decent but there is no HP, so that early in the game I am pretty damn squishy and that Targon's + Sighstone HP spike is starting to look real nice. Well Knight's Vow has HP on it...true, but it's passive is not very good in the early game when you compare it to any of the shield/heal boosting items out there, and it's passive only so you can't really make plays with it. I mean I think even Athene's on an enchanter right now is a better first buy than either of those options. I mean the one item spike for tank supports just looks bad right now. Now, when you get both Locket and Knight's Vow both online you're looking pretty good, let's hope you get there.

Don't even get me started on stuff like Bard, Thresh, Rakan. What can you buy on those guys to get them in the conversation again? Rakan may actually become good again MAYBE, because if people stop playing tank supports he can build Ardent like enchanters but engage and clap those enchanters too. Kind of fill the void that the tanks will leave behind by being an enchanter who can engage well. MAYBE.

I think Riot should start looking at items like Force Staff from DOTA. Yeah I know, letting enchanters buff their shields AND help the ADC kite would be a bit much. But then they would at least have to choose between stacking Ardent/Redemption or go for the increased mobility. I think it's sad that some of our coolest supports are in lala land because they don't heal/shield and aren't tanks.

With leona I usually go item 3025 item 3053 item 3748 item 3083 and boots, with my relic shield

Whisper871 votes

But...then she's not a support anymore.

Lios Ashenblade1 votes

So being able to deal damage, and survive...means you arent a support? Someone better tell half the other supports being played

funny that before and now still tanksupport dominate proplay. In Highelo even before the change Supports played like 90% of the time with the Combined Items already instead of item 3312 , item 3306 item 3309 and rubysighstone. Today on eu lcs patch 8.02 we saw Braum and Tham Kench again (most pciked supports first 2 weeks), Alsitar, Thresh, Rakan and Janna. Items on Tanksupports as you said are item 3097 / item 3401 item 3190 item 3109 , same itembuild pros already used for months since knights vow got basicly implemented and Locket got his healthscaling.

As for Bard, Thresh, Rakan with after their own suppitem each redemption looks to be a good choice as well as locket/knights vow. Rakan/Bard ofc more leading to an ardent as well as Thresh.

Those items are decent on Rakan/Bard/Thresh. But my feeling is that these guys don't get as much value out of these items as tanks and enchanters do.

I want to see an item implemented that feels as impactful to buy on Thresh as it is to buy Ardent or Redemption on Janna.

Häxel1 votes

How you want that? Thresh, Rakan and Bard are already high impact supports, where skill rewards you much more as on the other Supports. You know, a Janna only can press her shield and Ult adn q at the right time, but to use thresh e the right way, to hit the hook, to decide wheter to recast it and go in or not, with maybe a lantern followup. Or when to use the Bardult, when to go in with Rakan Combo, these are just other levels as playing tham kench, Braum, Soraka, Lulu etc. Yes, the 3 are no full tanks adn no full entchanters either, they are designed as hybrids so they need to build kinda hybrid. Entchanters and Tanksupports need the items to support farther for their lack of impact compared to high skill Supports. High skill supports naturaly that they are not full tanks or full entchanters don't profit that much from items but in exchange can carry harder with their abilitys in a fair meta. One item, could be good on Thresh and Rakan, would be item 3050 : it doesn't favor tanks realy more, farther it favors champions who go in, siad champions or Leona, Alistar, mostly Blitzcrank probably (who carries with his high impact q). So Items that favours going in could help thresh and Rakan while not so much Bard, maybe an Item that favors hitting Spells or Ults on enemies? idk if this is realy needed and farther that could easily be abused by other supports or even other classes as well. So yea, to have an item supporting the most hese 3 champions is realy hard, especialy cause they already support good when skillful players play them.

Whisper871 votes

What if we bring in something that is a skill based support item? Like Force Staff or Eul's Septer from Dota?\

Not those exact items, just something along that line of thinking.

Häxel1 votes

Like i said, how to make that item not abusable for other supports or other classes like Toplanetanks or Assassins like Ekko or Fizz?

Whisper871 votes

You put garbage stat lines on it so that you can't be a tank or a damage dealer with the item unless it's like your final item or you are already way ahead.

You make it build out of like an Aether Wisp and a Ruby Crystal, and combining them gives you no bonus stats, just the use.

Häxel1 votes

so why should thresh, bard adn rakan gonna want that item? it's not that these 3 can be played without geting stats. Even if they are less stat dependent they can't afford to play without them (or do you play these champs currently wuthout items or just with stopwatch? Gonna say the active is either so powerfull that multiple champs will take it or not worth for no stats that no one is gonna take them. There is no between. Keep in mind that often supports already ditch a whole item worth of stats for controlwards. If they have to hold anotheritemslow without getting stats: that's unlikly to happen if not, like i said, the active is crazy powerfull. And if thats the case toplaners who don't hold back an itemslot for controlwards still have the edge.

Whisper871 votes

Ardent sensor and Redemption don't give a ton of stats and supports still go on those. I would like items with roughly those amounts of stats that characters like Thresh can take advantage of as easily as a shielding or healing support can take advantage of those two items. I know Thresh can theoretically take either of those, but the value is just not there.

So let's make alternative versions of those two items where the USE on it is something that a Thresh/Bard/Rakan would be able to implement as easily and as impactfully as enchanters use the above mentioned items.

"Tank supports got dicked hard".

Tank supports got Aftershock. That's the single biggest buff they've ever received. They fucking destroy people with that. Look at Alistar's win rate. Look at Leona's. They are monsters. Leona had to be nerfed, Aftershock got nerfed. Tank supports are great right now.

Yes, if you play a warden instead of a vanguard, you're probably not going to do well. But wardens are passive champions anyway, they don't really do anything. They're not even really 'tanks', they're just baby sitters. A tank is someone who goes into the fray and absorbs burst. So pick up a tank and do that. You'll be just fine, no matter your items.

Im just pissed we got our fun passives and actives gutted.... for wards. Wards of all things. The single worst part of the support role is put back onto the thing the supports need to generate gold instead of what made the items interesting and fun. We had an entire vision rework and overhaul so supports could stop being forced to ward everything at all times and spend gold elsewhere, and fun items that generate gold for us to make the game more enjoyable for us. Wards arent fun. At all.

with a NORMAL support u feel such a difference between the gameplay 1st u got 2 wards for early game (yours and the adc's) imagine playing against a kata comming to gank at lv6, u are kinda fucked since wards early got 140+ cd and they last 60+seconds, when sightstone still was here this was the only counter we had for a gank 2nd the movement speed... this is kinda my opinions but it bothers me ... SOOO badly so back in the days i would build Timeworn Talisman of Ascension item 3306 it gave great ms to some certain champs like i used to have 420+ms on rakan but i just played a game as rakan in new patch.. i had 390ms was slower than my adc this i think is waaay to slow for a going in support. not to forget i had item 3009 aswell i still don't understand why they did this tbh. i just don't see the point i only think they updated this so the mage cough cough ''support'' Brand Lux Veigar
can build full ap and ks all kills the adc needs to carry. (wich is not the job of an support btw rito)

i have never wished so much to revert a patch since i just feel my role is dying more and more every patch

Häxel1 votes

Counter vs kata: lookign at minimap and pings? No support with item 3117 ? Ult flash is to slow? Well, there is also item 3800 if you just want to engage fast. But keep in Mind Talisman Active could return as active item.

I couldn't care less about the actives, I dislike how long the quest takes to finish, so I can actually have vision in lane, IF your adc is on their shit you may be okish, with only minor gaps in vision, otherwise, once you pop that second trinket ward you are blind for a while, even longer if someone happens to sweep it, and everyone likes to point out the control wards, which while not expensive, they get cleared basically as soon as you give up control of that area, by either backing, or being pushed back under your turret

Häxel1 votes

the thign si: if you fast upgrade your item to tier 2 (go directly with 500 gold base) and regularly proc your passive you should be realy fast with Sightstone. Only choice you got it faster was sightstonerush after maybe you got a doublekill as the support, but otherwise it should be the same or even faster.
