Quick question about Ranked

So I've just gotten into playing Ranked for the past few days, my friend got to Platinum so I was inspired to try and get to Silver (I was placed in Bronze 1). I have never played ranked alot, only doing my promos and occasionally a few with friends, but I usually stuck to Norms. My friends told me when I first started playing last season that when I played Ranked for the first week or two, I would tank hard and drop numerous divisions. Well, after playing Ranked alot this past week, I have fallen to Bronze 3 and have only won 10 ranked matchups in this season (out of the 40ish that I've played).

Is this normal, or do I just suck? Some of my games yesterday are just awful (2/11/1 Soraka lol), but I'm talking in general. My friends have been saying it but I've never really believed them and I want someone on here to either confirm or deny what they're saying. Am I supposed to tank a few divisions when I first start playing Ranked?

This is normal. Every season they do a soft reset on everybody's ranks and almost everybody gets placed in a lower rank after they finish placements. Unless you're some sort of MOBA prodigy it is completely normal for you to be placed in bronze, especially if this is your first season. Why? because a lot of higher ranked players are also doing placements and getting placed in ranks closer to your's so it may seem like you're getting completely outclassed by people in your level, just remember they probably went from Gold to Bronze and are trying to climb back up.

I know you're supposed to get put in a lower division than you were originally. My question is about if your MMR is supposed to tank after you start playing ranked for the first time. I've lost, I believe, 9 straight ranked games since my promos, so I'm wondering if this is supposed to happen to everyone.

The strange thing is, I can go into Norms and win 3 in a row, but as soon as I hop into Ranked it's more losing.

Well bronze is a nightmare period very hard to get out of as either seem to be on team that does really well or on a team that gets crushed... My first season got dropped to b5 nvr made it out.. Helps when u play characters that can carry games to help move u up

"My friends told me when I first started playing last season that when I played Ranked for the first week or two, I would tank hard and drop numerous divisions. " I tell you what your friends are referring to. The calculated MMR (Matchmaking Rating, ELO derived system) for a player is not going to be perfect right off the bat if they have never played ranked before and the MMR of the player for their early matches are going to skew more towards the average MMR. Your friends are speaking under the assumption that said average MMR is going to be far higher than the level of play of the player and that they will consistently lose games. It can, of course, go in any direction; a player is not predestined to lose; A player could play at a higher level and be placed higher or they could perform at that level and stay the same.

It's normal because you have been losing games; that's the long and the short of it.

Read if you want, because for the rest of this post because I'm going to a treat you with respect and be frank:

To be frank: These people are bullshitting you. This is April, everyone isn't still doing their placements. And there is not some procedure that makes everyone get placed in Bronze. Everyone in every ranked game you have played for the last week have had average MMR for the division or lower, or far lower, with the only the exception of one who was higher than the average (looking to climb) and he was on your team. And the other guy is as well; he is effectively lying to you for his own sake. He is placed in the easiest division of the easiest tier to climb out of.

So to answer your question... XFCbot (NA): "Is this normal, or am I inexperienced? " Is what I would prefer. It's both, and that's just fine. If you want to improve and rank up: Don't worry; You'll get there.

Thanks for the answer, I really appreciate it. I hope I'll get there eventually

the second part of my post sort of explains why you might be losing. Gold players get placed into bronze if they didn't win most of their placements, so you'll end up getting matched against more skilled players as a result. I havent played much ranked this season, but last season there was a lot of previous diamond players getting matched with me in my games.

In the bronze/silver mmr it can be difficult to climb as a support. I am gold 3 right now and to be honest, climbing in silver is a lot harder than climbing in gold (assuming one is skilled). There is a lot of randomness that takes place and there are many people of different skill levels. For example, you could have a game with bronzes, silvers, gold, and even plats which combines to make a difficult and frustrating experience. Keep your head up and try out jung, mid, top, or adc as they can be easier to climb with (if you have what it takes ;). People tend to take ranked more seriously and this can cause them to easily lose their temper and trust me you will see a lot of it. Don't let it get to you though. Just focus on the game and work on itemization, positioning, warding, and everything else.

I'm not a support main in any means, I hate playing support, but I can usually do "fairly" well with it. The game I was referring to was one where I was just straight-up garbage with Soraka, someone I have level 4 mastery with. I usually try to play top or jungle. Thanks for the advice though, I take it to heart ^^
