@Riot the reason why the new BE system is a failure isn't due to numbers, but something else

TL;DR: reward feeling is more important than reward number

Reward system should be more about how the current reward system feels than the actual calculation behind the current reward system. Yes, we will certainly be getting more champions than we did traditionally in the long run by theoretical probability. Suppose we get a malzahar(4800 BE) shard on leveling, camille(6300 BE) shard on next level, Yasuo(6300 BE) shard on next level, and then some bunch of nunu(450 BE) shards on the next level.

In this case, do we get more reward than the traditional system on average? YES! ABSOLUTELY! So.... do we actually feel satisfied with it when bunch of 450 BE shards come out? NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_theory As shown in the very first paragraph of this wikipedia page, it is an expected human behavior to "make decisions based on the potential value of losses and gains rather than the final outcome, and that people evaluate these losses and gains using certain heuristics" and we players are no exception.

Overwhelming majority of us including myself are not statisticians that think about rewards in terms of numbers. Rather, overwhelming majority of us are simply going to feel a wtf moment whenever those Nunu,Annie,Ryze,etc(450 BE) shards comes out. We players, as human beings, don't rely on calculations to think about game theory to decide what's better for us. Instead, we just make decision by feeling instead.

Unless this issue of human psychology can be dealt with, the new BE system will never feel as rewarding as the traditional IP system despite giving more BE on average, and therefore a failure.

I still think them just adding 25-100 BE after matches without compensation nerfing the current system would do wonders.

Nice Post.

That's the boards for ya, a well thought out post with facts and it gets downvoted. Meanwhile the just I want to whine, and not explain ones get all the upvotes.

I just hit lvl 33 and got 3 champ shards in my latest box. All 3 shards were worth 90 BE. So screw you and F-Off if you think that's fine. This game is literally pay to experience "fun" now, end of story. If you wanna sit there and grind lvls out for 270BE a lvl be my guest. But I'm not going to stick around and continue defending a Company that purposely gimps their playerbase' experiences in a game to the point it's more beneficial to simply leave and enjoy ourselves elsewhere.

so u only had chance to acquire 3 leveling rewards, and you expect it to be close to the theoretical probability value. So here's my view on it:

  1. you are completely wrong on that
  2. you derived the wrong conclusion because the Prospect Theory as i discussed in the post above also applies to you

Reward per level on average is still higher than traditional IP system but it still has a lot of deviation. And when a low end deviation occurs even just once, it feels extremely awful like what you just described above.

Thank you for solidifying my point.

With those 3 shards worth 90 BE you also got 2 shards worth 270 for a total of 810 BE this is the lowest possible amount of BE that you can get.

Even paying does not help. All those champ shards I paid for through events just became garbage.

I think the main reason people are complaining is because they think about all the champions they've already unlocked with IP and heard the new system would be even faster, so they expect to unlock more champions with it. But they've forgotten that they spent 3 years or more unlocking all those champions so the payoff they expect isn't going to happen in the first week, so they declare that the new system is slower without actually stopping to think.
