How comes "playmaker" champs always end up being annoying/hated?

Legacy Hydralpha··23 votes·5,105 views

Champions like Vayne, Yasuo, LeeSin, Camille, and Riven always seem to be hated by most of the community (even when not discussing the people who main them...) They tend to feel annoying and unfun to have to fight. What exactly do these characters have that makes them so annoying and hated? Is it their mobility, damage, outplay potential, CC, or just having a toxic kit for the game? What makes y'all annoyed by these champs? For me it's just how much they have to offer, or being overloaded. It's easy to make a champion sound OP or overloaded, but look at what these champs tend to have.

  • Mobility (Situational or not)
  • Damage (In the form of either burst or DPS)
  • Some sort of HARD crowd control (stuns, knockups, displacements, etc.)
  • Useful in teamfights (Asides from probably Camille, who's a bit more duelist-oriented)

The real question is what truly makes these champions so unliked and hated, and what can be done to fix it besides QQing about "nerf/delete so-and-so" or Riot (sometimes) taking sides on champions? (I won't bother quoting what they said about Lee Sin cause it does make sense: have a flashy champion make money, it's business. They said they're going to nerf him if he becomes overbearing, and we have seen that happen.)

Personally, I tend to have three main issues with such champions.

  1. They have the tools to dictate how a fight occurs, so their deaths are usually due to them screwing up rather than you out-playing them.

  2. They tend to attract toxic players (due to their nature as duelists focused on 'outplaying' opponents) at far higher frequency than most champions; they tend to be appealing to players focusing on personal performance and KD rather than cooperation/strategy.

These players are frequently prone to harassment, AFKing, tilting and feeding which ruins the game for their allies and enemies alike; if a player picks the champion, everyone is just waiting to see if they are toxic.

  1. The champions tend to be feast-or-famine; they will either get fed or feed horribly. Games will often be decided based on the champion's performance since they can single-handedly win or lose a game based on their performance.

While I'm not going to say that such champions aren't balanced, I dislike having them in the game for either team. I find that they tend to ruin the experience far more often than most champions.

Love all those down-votes. Even though I agree with 1 and half of 3 (none of them are ever going to 1v5 a remotely competent team). 2 is just too subjective for me to get behind, though I don't oppose the theory.

EndlessSorcerer5 votes

I wasn't necessarily talking about them 1v5ing.

The main issue is whether they feed/tilt beyond their team's ability to compensate for.

I don't see how thats a problem(your first point) I do agree with your others tho

An aspect that Riot has been trying to promote is counterplay. When you fight against a champion, you should be trying to figure out how to beat them, rather than hoping they're so bad that they screw themselves up. I mean, you can, but that should only be a part of it.

Oakleaf Ranger2 votes

Yah they are really feast or famine, getting manhandled by whoever they feed feels awful to play against or if they succeed and get fed they become obnoxious pricks who care more about looking good than actually closing out the game.

I'll tell you why I hate each of them. Vayne Percentile Health True Damage built into her auto-attacks and really no way to locate her once she goes invisible other then by sheer luck. Anit-tank itemization is also really powerful right now, so its hard to build against her. Yasuo That Windwall and how hard he punishes even the slightest mistake, as well as how hard he scales if ahead. LeeSin Tower diving and the amount of damage he does is always hard to determine. His kit is so versatile, it gets annoying trying to even partially predict what he'll do next. Camille Feels a bit overloaded, but I don't really have an issue with her other then her ability to heal herself; robot legs equals self-healing? They'll tack sustain onto anything these days. Riven Shield that scales with damage, a ranged cone execute that acts as a damage steroid before use, and its hard to catch her or punish her for mistakes because of all the mobility, all with costs of any kind to cast them. Out of all the champions mentioned, I dislike her possibly the most because she has no mana or other costs to her abilities.

Hinagiku332 votes

I just don't get people complaining about Riven's shield scaling with AD.

Diana OriannaRumble Ryze Viktor all scale primarily with AP and nobody seems to care that their shields scale with their primary damage stat.

Her stun and mobility I get. The animation cancelling I get. Her having a shield at all I get (but she does pay for it by having garbage health regen).

But if mages can stack AP to increase both their damage and their shields, then I fail to see why Riven can't do the same with AD.

The Lexer6 votes

Personally, I think the problem is more the dash on the shield. Since her q already has 3 dashes, being able to dash again as well as block damage doing so just seems like too much.

Atanchan1 votes

To be fair, it's the equivalent of a "dodge roll" with invulnerability frames, except it trades lasting for more than half a second for not canceling all damage until later on in the game.

3TWarrior1 votes

the main issue is each of those champions (other than ryze) have casting delays (though I tremble at the thought of tank diana...) think about it, a victor that runs in wasting everything he has...is going to get wasted...a riven that does it is going to likely take half your health bar and then take the other half with auto attacks

Arakadia1 votes

Well one thing to consider is that for Riven building AD lets you auto harder, use spells harder, and get a shield that can absorb more.

Someone like Ryze only gets a stronger shield and harder hitting spells.

I have a problem with nearly every champ on that list, but it's not because they're flashy or popular, it's because of their mechanics and how counterplay goes for them.

Vayne her true damage has no counters whatsoever. If you can't lock her down, you lose. Period. Her one weakness outside laning phase is cc, but with qss, her ult, and her q, only champs like Malphite and Gnar can lock her down with huge aoe cc, and that's if they have teammates with more cc to follow up. Yeah she takes skill and reflexes to play right when she's dodging skills, but unless her enemy has all the right tools to take her down, she wins. Yasuo I love how flashy he is, and his outplay potential, but his problem is just that. Basically, you're a boss ath the end of an old videogame. A bad yas will just run headlong at you and get demolished, but a good yas WILL win. Powergamers don't lose boss fights, and powergamers play him. He has all the right tools to win and unless he messes up, he can never die. Plus once he gets 2 items it doesn't matter how hard you shut him down, he can win the whole game. LeeSin He doesn't have quite the outplay potential or the skillcap as Yas or Vayne, but his combos are insane. His full combo (wardhop, e, ult, q,q) has a 380% bonus AD ratio, high base damage, plus it ends with a missing health scaling and plants him in front of you with 40% bonus attack speed. He builds ad, period. So many other champs have to give up one thing in their build to have another, but there is no reason not to build straight ad in the early game on Lee. I just want wardhopping removed so that he has counterplay. It's outdated and it's bs to play against. Riven Same as lee, but replace wardhopping with animation cancelling. If she wants to weave in AA's, go ahead, but make her have to take more time to do so. The skill with Riven should be with reflexes, desisionmaking, and knowing your limits, not pressing buttons really fast. She's basically a mechanically hard Garen, she should have the same issues he does. But instead, because of mechanics and no other reason, she gets an incredible skillcap. Camille I don't really hate her, but then again I haven't played much toplane since her release so I don't know her well. I think her jungle nerfs were unwarranted, she should be balanced with jungle in mind. I'm glad her ult expires when she dies too, that was broken.

To be fair, I hate more champs than I can count for the same reasons, but most of them don't get special treatment and have their problems addressed.

Spoofghoul6 votes

It's because they get to be overloaded because they have ''outplay potential''

When in reality they cannot actually be outplayed, rather, either they fuck up or you are screwed.

It basically boils down to them having the kit to outplay you, but due to being so overloaded not having many, if any, moments of weakness you can exploit.

Take Yasuo for example. He always has the edge, whether it's the mobility to get to you or run from you, or if he doesnt have access to it he can just windwall your kit, and if that is on cooldown he still has his passive shield to keep him healthy untill he gets access to his windwall/mobility. or if not he can just knock you up. Now you might think well then lets bulk up and buy armor, nope 50% arpen in kit. If you can ''out dps'' him he has the defenses to outlast you, if you can ''outlast'' him he has the dps tools you murder you anyway

His passives like the free crit, shield and armorpen also allow him to snowball really easy and, make easymode comebacks if he falls behind His early game is stronger then yours and his lategame is too

And then there are things to make champions like yasuo more easymode, like the ult placing you out of turretrange, an ally can knock someone up at the edge of your screen and then it's up to you to R or not to R just press a button get teleported in their face extend the knockup and get free arpen Is that an outplay? i think not! Even his 3th Q has a huge hitbox, twice as big as sona's ult must be hard to miss. . . But in case you have a severe case of disturbed motor function you can use it in conjunction with your dash as a point and click abiltiy to get to that pesky mobile champion anyway

I just took yasuo as an example here

But what most have in common is they decide when and how a fight happens, And the way they scale makes it hard for them to fall behind. Their early game tends to be quite strong for their lategame potential as well

Oh and they attract obnoxious people

Shahamut1 votes

I have no problems taking down a Yasuo as a top lane main.

I mostly play Renekton in top, but Im sure I could do it with others as well. My favorite counter to Yasuo though (for me personally) is Skarner.

I have been able to out duel Yasuo at every stage of the game once I have Tabi and Sheen on the scorpion. You know why? Hard. C. C.

This is how you beat Yasuo, and a lot of other difficult to deal with champs. You either have to have reliable hard cc chain, like Skarner, or you have to have a single hard cc with some burst like Renekton. Even if Yasuo builds a bit tanky, he won't be able to deal with these kinds of fights.

Team fight-wise, it just depends on your team vs theirs. I mean, it IS a team game after all.

Spoofghoul2 votes

Oh it's not as if i cannot deal with them

there are ways to counter, but champions like yasuo and riven are generally annoying in the ways i described

lots of free stats whether damage amps or penetration or ''health'' through shielding and ofc mobility

though there are many champs who have trouble dealing with them they dont have that hard cc + burst / dps or they can't realistically build things like thornmail or sunfire cape

Shahamut2 votes

yeha, I just figure it has something to do with having decent mobility and either cc or negation. Sometimes all 3. In general though, I think people just get annoyed with things they don't know how to deal with. 100%

The most annoying champs for me are Teemo, Jayce, and Quinn. Because I am a top lane main who likes to play bruisers. Are those matchups impossible? no, absolutely not, but the lane is the most frustrating thing ever...

Same reason I hate playing against Ziggs, Xerath and good Vel Koz players. There isnt really a laning phase AGAINST them, just with them... Against you...

A gun is an item that requires skill and responsibility to be used. Now put a gun in the hands of a retard that has been drugged with cocaine and has a whole set of wrong notions installed in his knowledge. Set it loose and free.

Now you understand better why mechanically complex champs are despised.

YoungSirJ0ey1 votes

So there's a 50/50 chance of them killing themselves or you, but unless you are armed similarly, you have no choice in the matter.

That is a perfect analogy.

deadlychuck5 votes

Probably because "playmaking" is a vague description. It's generally a result of a champion who is designed with power to either annihilate single/multi targets, which have very little to no negatives when faced with the opposite of what they're designed.

They are just champions who have their weaknesses handled for them in the design of their kit.

50000000000000004 votes

I wanted to say something like that. Thresh is a playmaking support who can dictate how a fight goes significantly, yet he gets minimal hate. Same with Bard. Malphite ultimate is a huge playmaking ability, but doesn't get much hate either. I'd say it's mostly the mobility and damage.

Anidan3 votes

I'd agree and say it's mobility and damage, too.

I'm going to actually base this on the fact that tanks don't generally get complained about unless their damage is too high with other aspects of their kit only being brought up against their damage. People don't care if a tank is literally unkillable or a CC god until their damage just steps a tiny bit out of line, and then the levee breaks for the tank. I'm using tanks as an example specifically because it's easiest to bring evidence for that one via Sejuani and Gragas during the Cinderhulk meta.

There's things I could say about tanks (and some of their players) using this as a springboard, but those sound a bit more inflammatory so I'll reserve those to myself, and say I simply agree about the combination of mobility and damage with that bit of cited evidence, knowing there's more to pull from if necessary.

3TWarrior1 votes

well, something that can be said about thresh until the late game is mostly "I messed up" when playing against him as early game his lantern and Q are all he has whereas the more time he spends not backing trying to defend his carry, the more time the players have to focus him instead

this can be an issue for champions like Caitlynn when partnered to him as then most of their weaknesses are negated, but I think a better example would have been Blitzcrank

blitzcrank is based solely around one thing: did I land my Q? if he lands his Q, the fight is over, if he does not, he has to wait the cooldown

I think it goes along something like this: How many of you guys got their ass kicked by one guy in a sport? I have. It didn't feel like he was good. It felt like he was cheating by not doing things you would do. This applies for "playmaking" champs. Most people don't go for flashy plays, but when they are against people who can, they don't feel outplayed, they feel like they got cheated on. That's just my thought though. Could be totally wrong.

Is what you're saying that there's always a dictated way to play?

Snowplosion1 votes

Not exactly, but there is a basic format to every game. In League you take towers to break a crystal in EVERY game. No exceptions.

JavelinJoe4 votes

They tend to be either be hand fed their "play-making ability, deal stupid amounts of early game damage, somehow never fall off or behind, or have a mechanic which is unique. But the main reason is that they have a bit of everything, making them hard to deal with.

And also those who don't like to face a challenge, whine to no end.

ZT Xperimentor4 votes

Because when they are played well, they remove the capacity to counterplay them.

Of yasou screwed up and can't dodge a skillshot? He can still negate it with windwall. Oh a bruiser used their gapcloser to catch vayne? Too bad she has unavoidable self-peel. Think you can out do riven's combo? Unfortunately she can animation-cancel to deal her damage faster.

The list goes on & on, but is fundamentally the same; if they're played poorly it shows and it feels like a fair fight, but when they're played well it's nothing but a chain of frustrations. Either by too many safety nets, overloaded mechanics, or denial of player input.

Shrug

As the Riven main and a fighting game player first and foremost, I stand in the party that wishes more champions were like these playmakers, tbh. I'd rather not win or lose purely based on a stat check like most other champions do. I want to be able to pour some serious practice hours into Riven like I would with any fighting game character I would learn how to play and just get better at playing her, and I would very much like everyone else to do the same for all their characters. I never really liked simple characters unless I'm dead tired or just being lazy and want to win with single button presses every now and then.

I also wish stats were not so god damn important or else your skill level means absolutely nothing

Anidan4 votes

As someone who plays DotA2, it seems normal to me.

I'd rather not have every match up dictated by skill [...]

Wait, wat? Isn't that what League players constantly ask for alongside strategy?

NineTailedMystic12 votes

Allow me to elaborate. In fighting games, even if you have 1 HP, you can still win if you play well despite being behind. If I'm two kills and 30 CS above you, I should be able to stat check you even if you're still 0/0/0 without a significant outplay on your end or a 1v2. Or if I determine you have a better micro than me, I should be able to play back and out macro you. What I'm trying to say is that stat checks should be a thing, but the stat checker needs to be able to fail. If I'm 5/0 on Ahri and miss E and both ends of Q I shouldn't be able to kill you unless you're very behind.

As for hard counters, I am vehemently against them. Champion kits will always have natural counters just due to how many kits there are, but there should never be a time where you should expect to win because you picked a hard counter due to the intensity of the counter. Annie vs Yasuo for example.

Anidan3 votes

Ah, well, since you elaborated it's significantly easier to see your side without erroneous interpretation on my end :) I can be fine with that school of thought. I'm personally not against hard counters, but I tend to play a different game and that game is handled differently and I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea, hence why they play League, or HotS, or whatever they play.

Thank you for elaborating, I like seeing other people's perspectives :)

I would rather it not end up that way because it is not what Moba's are about and ends up placing too much importance on ping time and button mashing speed

some of these champions are just annoying to play against because they can out-trade most champions in their lane because the player memorized a combo

let's take a few examples

Riven against old mordekaiser. Old mordekaiser was a bit toxic but he offered something: shutting down other toxic top laners and a simple setup for results. Mordekaiser against riven would be an actual skill matchup because both champions had an equal chance of victory

now compare that to riven against say jayce. If that riven gets even a single moment of pressure, the jayce will either have to burn flash or die. In most cases, the jayce will have the advantage of range but riven is never limited by time with nearly instant combos and has multiple forms of hard crowd control to manage her opponent at will

Jeanne fan club3 votes

Alright, I know this doesn't apply for vayne, but I think the reason they are all hated is the fact that they have mobility, and the ability to displace/stun up to 5 enemy champions at once. When I say this, I mean the fact that yasuo can get a 5 man tornado, or lee can get a 5 man knock up off kick, camile can displace 5 people at once, and riven has the possibility of stunning multiple people with Q and W.

Of course they do not do this consistently. What I mean is that they are able to move into position with mobility to possibly stun more than one person. I think we can all agree that these champions tend to do damage, so when they are able to both affect multiple champions through cc and do more damage than a juggernaut or tank, they end up feeling extremely toxic to play against, despite the skill it takes to play all of these champions. None of these champs are particularly broken in my opinion. I think we all know how shitty an underfed yasuo is, or how useless a feeding riven is, or camile and vayne for that matter.

Personally I don't really hate any of these champions, I tend to hate champions more like Fizz or Annie who completely change the way you have to play the game by making you play more passive, or champions like Vladimir who are extremely annoying to deal with.

Tahminatrix 2 votes

Pretty much all of those champions have built in mobility and cc, as a TahmKench main I get salty whenever I see a riven who still out runs me and my team when i manage to land my skillshot and cc her....because her q spam basically makes her immune or resistant to movement impairment. Riven really needs to lose her aoe cc when ahead, it doesnt make sense for her to have so much mobility, aoe dmg, and an aoe cc....having black cleaver so you cannot possibly tank against her nor can you body block anything she does just makes it worse.

Could say the same for Vayne she gets free damage on her W, I like the idea of a tank shredder, but why does she get to do insane amount of damage to squishies aswell, while also having resistance to cc and a stun that pretty much is an FU to any tank that tries to go up and use cc on her.

and SHUT UP ABOUT VAYNES "WEAK EARLY GAME" I rushed item 3047 and the only thing the enemy vayne had was aitem 1055 item 1038 and item 1018 yet she crits for nearly 200 without empowering q...or 3rd auto... ( i think the exact number was 183)

Champions like this clearly force the game into rock papers scissors, the ones countering these champs are equally toxic champs, Nasus (lets just e you and it will be easy for me to contribute more then you to a group fight, but if your team does not have any auto dependent champs I guess I will just do as much damage as possible and carry anyway) Same for Teemo

^ what i mean by toxic is not just playing against but playing as too, there will always be counterpicks and in soloqueue this can go both ways to the point where skill < luck

All in all, just counterpick/ get atleast one of those champs on your team, preferably riven / yasuo since they will contribute more to group fights without being dependent on teammates, it really depends on what elo you are in.

Its because when those champions don't go by both laners skill but only by the outplay based champion because they have so much power with just some practice.

Geshultz2 votes

My guess reason why most people in low elo hate Vayne is because they don't punish vayne properly during the early game and it allows her to scale into her monstrous late game. Even trading 1 to 1 ratio of kills just makes her get closer to her late game. I am guessing 2nd reason is that people try to duel her and most people expect ADCs/bot marksmen to be able to easily duel and don't like the fact that she can duel them. I am guessing 3rd reason is that they don't like how vayne is stronger as game goes on because they don't end the game quickly or its the fact she points a time limit on the game to end it quickly. 4th I am guessing is because they hate vayne's ability to kite divers and bruisers and deal high dps within her limited auto range of 550. I am guessing 6th reason would be her stealth makes her hard to lock down and it frustrates people trying to hit stuff on her. I am guessing 7th reason is people playing squishes try to duel her without any burst but dps or use mainly autos in which is vayne's best situation.

Yaskamasandwich1 votes

Due to the nature of duelists they tend to decide the game in champion select with some lee way. However these duelists and some others like Fiora have not only overloaded kits but huge safety nets. If two players of equal skill are facing each other and one of them picks one of these champions, the other has to counter pick them or else they lose. Worse off if you the first player picks a champion that doesn't counter pick them, and the other one of them picks one of those champions, gg. You don't out play them, you can only counter pick them. Possibly with the exception of Lee since he is mostly dependant on his teammates ending the game fast. That and being the jungler is more than counter picking.

The reason is all the safety nets and on top of the denial those safety nets have, this leads to even more hate. Take Camille for instance. Her R makes her untargetable on top of what it does, stops unstoppable forces, knocks opponents away, AND you can't flash out of it. Denial of summoner spells is always considered a cheat regardless of how hard it is to use. Like Fiora's parry for instance, regardless of having to time it perfectly, it cheats because it denies summoner spells. These spells cheat because of ... reasons.

These champions have the tools to especially remove other champions from the game entirely. On top of that the champions removed have harder skill shots to land. Or champions whom sacrificed a lot in their kits for their role, and get replaced by same overloaded champions. Got an UNSTOPPABLE Sion charging at you with basically THE HARDEST SKILL SHOT IN THE GAME TO LAND? It's kay just Camille ult or Fiora parry. Got a Nami ult incoming? from a the support WHOM ARE SUPPOSE TO HAVE NOPE BUTTONS AND PLAYMAKING ABILITIES BECAUSE THEY DO NO DAMAGE. Just windwall it, oh and Yasuo does do damage. Tahm Kench was even hated because he dealt single target damage and had a NOPE button regardless of being a support. You can smell the favouritism.

So that's why these champions are hated. They turn the game into champion select of counter picks. Have tools and safety nets that removes other champions from the game. Same safety net that steal other roles' job and denies them theirs. Are always useful regardless how bad they are because of overloaded kits. Deal undeniable damage on top of what they have in their kits. Seem to draw favouritism from Riot even if Riot may or may not favour them.
