Aatrox's E needs a massive change

The attack damage buff is disappointing and lasts for like 2 seconds. The only interactive thing with it is that you can use it during your Q yet you only move two feet in front of yourself

It's basically the slower and smaller version of riven's E

The change that he needs is as follows:

Q: Darkin Blade

NEW - Aatrox is able to move while casting this ability.

And then his E needs to have a different active.

I agree with this. I think there are a ton of reasons why the new E is misplaced: it's not something we previously saw on Aatrox, it's far too similar to another champion's combo, i.e. Riven's E with her Q, the AD steroid adds no new gameplay and overlaps with his R's own AD bonus, and it just looks weird as hell to have this big, sword-wielding monstrosity skip daintily around. Meanwhile, the new Q feels clunky on its own, and is clearly designed with his E's repositioning in mind. Simply allowing Aatrox to walk around while casting Q could make him feel a lot smoother, and giving him another tool to play with instead could likely make him much more fun.

Ideally, I'd also like it if Aatrox had a more active way to heal, rather than some Rhaast-style permanent omnivamp, and I feel this could be an opportunity to reinject his old stance-switching by having him choose whether to have his next on-hit innate deal bonus damage and a debuff, or heal him instead, via a toggle on his E.

if he could move while casting Q it would make it 2 easy to land, and for an ability with 3 separate knock ups thats too much power in one ability. You did see E on the old Aatrox its half of Old Aatrox's Q, combining Q and E gives u 2 of Aatrox's old Q's (at a shorter range - BUT the 1st 2 casts of the new Q plus E would reach about the same distance as the old Q). E's AD overlaps with the Ult's AD for a reason. More AD means more healing, stacking AD is what you want. And he's not skipping daintily, have u not seen the heavy impacts on each Q? thats not dainty and it wont be when the enemy Aatrox E+Q's into you.

It seems u guys keep thinking of laning with Aatrox, sure in a 1v1 it may be hard to land ur Q's...But in a teamfight where everything is cluttered the new Aatrox will actually do better than the old Atrox and for that the new Aatrox symbolizes war better because his AoE's are better than AA's at dmging and taking on multiple targets at the same time, which also means more healing. Just think about it: During the ults AD buff, u E + Q into some enemies. Thats the Ult and E AD stacking on top of the Q's AD and when u hit multiple targets u deal ALL that dmg and u heal for EVEN MORE.

You guys are all looking at this on a surface lvl take some time to dig in deep and REALLY think about how his kit works together and the scenarios it was meant to shine in

U guys are forgetting that E also lets you heal off ALL dmg he does. Which leads to my problem with ur next statement

Um what do u mean? like I said above his E lets him heal off of ALL dmg dealt, AA's and abilities what do u want that is more active than that? and Rhaast was inspired by Aatrox not the other way around. Also his old stance switching which you hold in your eyes with a tinted view isn't as good as the new Aatrox, because it only let u heal on every 3rd AA, thats the opposite of what u said u wanted as a more active way to heal, when the new Aatrox heals off ALL AA's. And the new Passive also lets him get the bonus dmg AND MORE stuff, and the more abilities cast the more u get the bonus AD...oh and that bonus AD u didn't like on the E, it can also be used to grant more AD on regular AA's or Passive buffed AA's. The old W was actually unhealthy. The new Aatrox takes the best parts of the old Aatrox and makes them better and expands upon them making him more healthy for the game.

Okay, but that can just as easily be achieved by having just one AD steroid, not two. At the end of the day, Aatrox is balanced around a fixed power budget, which means that whichever amount of power he's having allocated to his steroids is going to be split into two, which by nature will invariably feel less strong than if that power had gone into a single effect.

At literally no point was there ever mention of Aatrox's laning, teamfighting, or dueling in the comment you replied to, in the comment I myself replied to, or in the thread OP. Similarly, strictly none of this discussion has ever touched upon how the new Aatrox symbolizes war relative to his old self. Moreover, you are simply describing how the new Aatrox works. That in itself carries no intrinsic value. As such, it is difficult to really discuss anything here, because there is nothing that you wrote in this paragraph that relates in any manner to the discussion at hand.

{quoted}

You guys are all looking at this on a surface lvl take some time to dig in deep and REALLY think about how his kit works together and the scenarios it was meant to shine in

And, presumably, you are in possession of this deep understanding of the new Aatrox's kit, in spite of the fact that you learned of it at the same time as the rest of us, that the new Aatrox hasn't even hit Live, and that you don't seem to have a clear idea of how certain parts of his kit actually work.

{quoted}

U guys are forgetting that E also lets you heal off ALL dmg he does. Which leads to my problem with ur next statement

Um what do u mean? like I said above his E lets him heal off of ALL dmg dealt, AA's and abilities what do u want that is more active than that?

So let's go over a few basics first: an active ability is an ability that typically requires a button press to activate, hence the name. Most champion abilities are actives, because you press a button to produce an effect, and when you're not pressing that button, that ability's component does nothing. By contrast, when an ability is passively in effect, even when a button isn't pressed, that ability is typically referred to as a passive. As such, permanent omnivamp is a passive effect, as it does not require the user to activate an effect in order to access that kind of sustain. In this case, omnivamp simply means Aatrox passively heals off of all the damage he deals, which does not really alter his choices in any meaningful way. By contrast, Aatrox's old self-heal came from a toggled passive, one which you had to specifically choose between two stances, and strike three times in sequence, in order to access. Because of this, Aatrox's new sustain paradigm requires less involvement and choice for Aatrox, and less gameplay altogether.

{quoted}

and Rhaast was inspired by Aatrox not the other way around.

Except Aatrox never had omnivamp until now, whereas Rhaast does. Thus, that much in his new kit, which is arriving after Rhaast, has clear parallels with the latter.

{quoted}

Also his old stance switching which you hold in your eyes with a tinted view isn't as good as the new Aatrox, because it only let u heal on every 3rd AA, thats the opposite of what u said u wanted as a more active way to heal, when the new Aatrox heals off ALL AA's.

Please refer to the above on the subject of how active Aatrox's old sustain was, but on top of that it feels like there's some confusion as to what the word "active" means and how it's being used. A thing is not "active" because you can do it all the time, and generally effects that happen with everything you do are passives. Active playstyles are about high moments and periods of downtime, as brought about by the bursts of power and subsequent cooldowns typically associated with most active abilities. Thus, a playstyle in which a champion has permanent life steal is less active than if they only healed every three attacks. The former requires no special gameplay, let alone any kind of commitment, whereas the latter has a stronger gate, and requires the user to do something a little more difficult, and put themselves at more risk in the meantime, in order to access the same kind of power. The latter playstyle is, therefore, more active than the former.

{quoted}

And the new Passive also lets him get the bonus dmg AND MORE stuff, and the more abilities cast the more u get the bonus AD...oh and that bonus AD u didn't like on the E, it can also be used to grant more AD on regular AA's or Passive buffed AA's.

Please explain how a cover-all damage buff generates any degree of meaningful gameplay, interaction or choice, particularly with regards to options that would not otherwise be available to the user. The notion that "more stuff" means more gameplay is terrifically naïve, and does not demonstrate a particularly deep understanding of what that "stuff" truly achieves in practice.

I can agree that the old W was unhealthy. Aatrox healing himself for free in lane kills interaction and negates the impact of trades, and later on means he essentially never dies if he gets enough attack speed. However, Aatrox's new sustain is just as stat-checky, if not worse, is even more poorly gated, and overall carries even less interaction than its previous iteration. It is, therefore, worse than Aatrox's current W in all the flaws the latter has been criticized for. As for the latter, while some elements remain, the statement is eminently questionable, as the majority of complaints regarding the new Aatrox specifically mention that he doesn't capture the original's core elements or identity at all. Perhaps the new Aatrox is better for you, but he certainly already isn't for many more players, a fact demonstrated by Riot's recent damage control post on r/AatroxMains.

Aatrox inspired Rhaast, and because Riot wants to make the Darkins cohesive they changed Aatrox abit. Aatrox is still the seed material even if the final tree looks a bit different

Proper sequence of chaining abilities for the most dmg?

Thats less so the case because most of his healing will come from abilities which are skillshots. For the most part the healing from normal AA's - if my source is correct - is pretty low, and the enhanced basic attack gets its CD reduced by hitting the sweet spot of Q on enemies, so Aatrox's MAX healing is gated by him landing his skillshots.

Sure, but that nonetheless completely counters the point that his Q would be "too reliable" if he could hypothetically move during its animation. He can already do so, and his Q is in fact designed to do so, using repositioning that is far sharper and more reliable than just walking.

Tbh I'm not a fan of stat steroids to begin with, but yes, I'd rather put all of Aatrox's bonus AD on either his E or his ult, probably his ult. Way back when, a Rioter mentioned how double-dipping on the same stat steroid on the same kit caused problems, because that stat ended up feeling difficult to appreciate, and more difficult to balance around two separate sources. At the time, Olaf was the issue, and to this day he still has a bit of a problem with his power expression.

{quoted}

Not to you, perhaps, but to many others and myself, it does. If anyone else wants to see, this video showcases the E pretty well, and it is a literal skip in the target direction.

But Rioters saw the old W as toxic hence the new version of sustain, and even then it was still a passive as is this new one, its just that the old one was on every 3rd AA and could be toggled off.

Rioters may have seen the old W as toxic, and I agree that it is, but that does not prevent the fact that autoattack-based sustain closer to Aatrox's old version was nonetheless achievable, as shown by champions like Warwick or Irelia, who both retained an autoattack-centric playstyle in addition to persistent healing (WW even kept his autoattack-based healing). As mentioned above, the old W being a toggle made the effect legitimately more active and interesting, whereas permanent omnivamp is neither.

At the end of the day, Aatrox's Blood Thirst was permanent life steal with a harsher gate, and the fact that it's been removed on the grounds of being unhealthy is concerning to me: if healing every three autoattacks is unhealthy, then how is healing every basic attack any healthier? If the issue was him healing on non-champions, how come life steal can do the same? For that matter, what even makes permanent omnivamp any better either? If that model of healing is so bad as to warrant reworking an entire champion from the ground up, why do we have multiple items and other champions with even more poorly gated sustain? Redoing Aatrox's W completely on these grounds opens a whole can of worms, because the exact same reasoning for doing so can just as easily be applied to life steal items, omnivamp items, Rhaast, and so on.

{quoted}

That has literally nothing to do with what I said. Of course Rhaast came after Aatrox, but Aatrox's new omnivamp came after Rhaast's. Rhaast's sustain may have been inspired by Aatrox's originally, but then Aatrox's new model is an almost complete copy-paste of Rhaast's.

{quoted}

hmm i see ur point, none the less, Riot decided that the W was toxic in some way.

Sure, but Riot deciding something doesn't make it an absolute truth. Riot has been wrong many, many times in the past, including on this Aatrox rework, and on some of those occasions even decided they had to revert their changes. The fact that they're making this sort of decision in the face of overwhelming opposition, as well as pretty basic and verifiable reasoning, suggests this is another choice that will age poorly, in addition to needlessly upsetting a lot of players.

{quoted}

Proper sequence of chaining abilities for the most dmg?

Again, what does that say about the new Aatrox's quality of gameplay? Any champion can use their abilities in a certain sequence for increased effectiveness, that does not make their gameplay inherently good on its own.

20% life steal isn't "pretty low", and his Q isn't a skillshot, it's a massive AoE, which is far less gated than just single-target autoattacks. There's perhaps some variation in damage from ability to ability, but the sustain itself is nonetheless tremendously muddy, as it's parcelled out over every single bit of damage he deals. Moreover, while autoattacks are targeted, getting three autoattacks is more difficult, and has formed the basis of many healthy passives. There was potential for variance, skill expression and counterplay there too.

If it has to be aimed and it goes in a direction its a skillshot, sure it doesnt hit only one target and go away, but its still gonna take skill to aim it and hit the opponent with, and thus it can miss.

getting 3 AA isn't as difficult on the old Aatrox with build in AS buffs and when ur also encouraged to build AS. hitting an aimed AoE that has a delay would be about the same difficulty if not more difficult.

That's not what a skillshot is, though. A skillshot is a projectile you throw out in a target direction that travels and collides with an opponent. Aatrox's Q is a ground-targeted AoE. Semantics aside, that same AoE is itself designed to hit over a vast radius, so it does not by any means follow the rules or difficulty of an actual skillshot.

{quoted}

Its not less gated than AA because it can miss, and AA do not miss at all.

Except it is also much more likely to hit multiple enemies at any given time, and grants healing in addition to Aatrox's autoattacks. It's not an either-or, he gets both.

By the time you've gotten any significant amount of attack speed, you're at a point where you're very squishy and the enemy team is both more concentrated and has more damage. I agree that landing three autoattacks becomes easier over time, but it is nonetheless still more difficult than just landing one auto, or a large AoE that heals off of minions in addition to whoever you're focusing.

The change that he needs is as follows:

And then his E needs to have a different active.

So, riot stated many times that aatrox will be a diver/jugg hybrid, but he CANNOT DIVE FOR SHIT.because riot is having problems fulfilling their own goals (lol). i had the same suggestion on reddit, that you should be able to move slower than usual when in q, and that e should be removed. thats incorrect, as a diver juggernaut hybrid is counter intuitive, both classes are the opposite of each other in one very important way. Divers have mobility that allows them to reliably access the backline like to get to prime targets. Juggernaut defining feature is pretty much that while completely lacking in the ability to reliably get to the back line with mobility, they deal MUCH more dmg and are MUCH harder to take down IF anyone gets within their range.

I believe u may be mistaking diver for skirmisher, its can be an easy slip up. But I believe that they were aiming for Jugger/Skirmisher and THAT was stated not Jugger/Diver.

Why do u care ?? you don't even play Aatrox... nor play top.

I don't play Aatrox but I think this is a thread for Aatrox mains to post on, and yes I do care because I might have started maining Aatrox If his rework was actually good.

the only problem is his e (and kind of his whole kit) is that it's just to help him hit his q. the w is for yanking enemies into a q, and his e is for positioning yourself while the q hitbox is visible. yeah, his autos are still powerful but nowhere near as good as current aatrox.

Not the case when u have to wait for the 3rd AA to deal the bonus dmg, in the end, can you deny that he's still all about swinging his sword? The AA attack style is part of what made him unhealthy as a drain tank. Now he's more about skill is this really such a problem?

What Aatrox needs is damage, because on the PBE his damage might be the most pitiful of any fighter I've ever seen. It's laughably low.
