Add a dodge button during champion select

ExplodingFist66··81 votes·18,047 views

It's frustrating having to completely close the client to properly dodge a game, especially when it takes a long time to load the client

This is more of a QoL (Quality of Life) change if anything but it will be useful in certain situations

https://i.imgur.com/a/XCbBuyt

Better yet we can just put this button in the corner (which is only available in custom select)

Yeah, dodging is a mechanic and it's not against the rules

So why not add this?

ExplodingFist668 votes

Exactly

Prozzak17 votes

They penalise you for dodging so clearly it is against the rules. Or am I missing something here and not getting a joke?

WeaselRune14 votes

The "penalty" is a discouragement, not a punishment.

It saves the system by avoiding people doing it excessively. Why people do it is because the LP loss typically isnt as bad as the MMR loss. The lower your MMR, the more likely you are to play with bad players that dont want to climb. Its pretty demonstrable and well known that its easier to carry, and climb (assuming you havent hit your skill ceiling) in higher ELO matches than the lower ELO shit shows.

So yes, it may chip off some LP to dodge, but then LP gains are based on your MMR vs the opponents you play, losing a match overall will hurt your LP gains more in the long run than losing a few to a dodge. Excessive dodging gives you a low priority que, and may have you waiting 15 minutes for a game... thats the real punishment.

So there is no "rule" against it, if there was, everyone past gold... err, idk, gold 2... everyone past gold 2 would be banned for breaking the rules. Chances are people have had to dodge the trolling AD Soraka, and AP Cait trolls at least once to spare their MMR, and only lose a fraction of the LP that troll game would cost them.

I may be only G3 here, but I have actually supported the Soraka carry. And you know what? It worked. Maybe because I didn't treat them like shit under the assumption that they're going to troll.

Well I personally agree, I don't dodge just because someone made a weird pick but if they outright claim they are gonna troll etc. I just don't even want to load into that game.

Going AD Soraka in the first place is troll. You don't need expert game knowledge or 200IQ theorycrafting skills to realize that Soraka has 0 AD ratios or AA modifiers and only modest base damage/healing on her abilities.

Whether or not you treat them like shit, they're a detriment to your team.

Well yeah, but you don't know what they're building from their champion selection. The 'raka bot I supported went AP carry, which is how we won. Turns out having the power to instantly silence the support after you land your CC on the carry is really useful.

WeaselRune2 votes

Raka can do stuff... GHASP! No shit, really?

I clearly said AD Soraka, and now youre talking about a full AP build Soraka.... youre trolling yourself or splitting hairs, either way completely missing the point... just not sure if its on purpose or not.

The point is you can ask, or question the pick they make, you can check OP.GG. If they say theyre building AP Raka, and youre cool, its fine. When they say theyre building AD raka... like Ive had to deal with, then they are shit, theyre treating everyone else who has them on their team like shit, and I wish I would have dodged.

What you have is an anecdote, and I know some people think their one off personal experience sets the laws of the universe.... spoiler, they dont.

Technically we all have anecdotes, but they revolve around "someone is acting like and ass, or making threats to act an ass" in game in the lobby, and we dont want to deal with it. Anyone who got bot and locks in Soraka, they know damn well what that looks like and if they arent willing to answer any questions about it, theyre trolling already even if they dont grief or int feed. Some people dont want to gamble.

I once had a game I dodged where someone picked Lucian jungle, I thought that seemed like a bad idea I didnt even ask I just checked OP.GG and they had 15 straight losses, 10 of them as Lucian with smite... So maybe... I could just play the match out and see what happens... Or I can dodge.

Trolls exist, and your "I had that thing" that WASNT EVEN THE THING I SAID is so damn pointless I think you should be a bit embarrassed for having written it.

Have you really though? Because I get the impression you're the kind of player who insta-tilts and either dodges or flames before the game without actually giving them the chance to troll or not.

WeaselRune2 votes

You said...

Because I get the impression you're the kind of player who insta-tilts and either dodges or flames before the game without actually giving them the chance to troll or not.

Let me see... something I said reminds me of what you just did...

What you have is an anecdote, and I know some people think their one off personal experience sets the laws of the universe.... spoiler, they dont.

Instead of an anecdote, you now have an "impression" that I hate to tell you, does not set the laws of the universe either... What you "may think" may not be true, and if thats all you can respond with then the other thing I said is much more true now...

so damn pointless I think you should be a bit embarrassed for having written it.

I play a lot of off meta stuff in normals, I constantly check in with the team to let them know Ima try to win, just doing it on an offmeta pick, so dont rage. So you really dont know shit about me, but all you can do is get salty cause I told you you should be embarrassed for writing nonsense about AP bot carry raka when Im talking about AD raka troll... pathetic...

So you assume things about me cause youre salty, and you use anecdotes that are not even related to make points, while missing the point... stop.... just stop.

Metal Janna1 votes

You do realize your alleged experience with an AD Soraka is also an anecdote right? You're acting like you have a more solid basis for your opinion but you don't. You don't have actual data to back up your position either, so bringing up the anecdotal nature of my argument serves no purpose except to attempt to project an air of superiority. Trying to sound superior might impress your schoolmates in middle school, but I took high school speech. Fuck outta here with that weak rhetoric.

WeaselRune2 votes

You do realize your alleged experience with an AD Soraka is also an anecdote right?

.... yes, its why I wrote this a couple post up...

Technically we all have anecdotes, but they revolve around "someone is acting like and ass, or making threats to act an ass" in game in the lobby, and we dont want to deal with it.

You know how I kept saying...

so damn pointless I think you should be a bit embarrassed for having written it.

This is why, so...

Fuck outta here with that weak rhetoric.

I mean asking if I realize something I wrote... youre either clueless (my vote).... or maybe just trolling but really bad at it...

Past time to be embarrassed about it tho.

You get penalized for leaving a game in progress but there's still a button for it. Dodging would be no different.

rujitra4 votes

Because dodging is not a mechanic that is supported as a strategy. Period.

Moonscourge27 votes

Dodging shouldn't be encouraged by having a button for it.

Completely unrelated, but Dead by Daylight for example allows you to play with friends, however you're going to have to group up again after every game because while possible, playing with friends is actually very much to the detriment of the killer. You can do it, but it's not necessarily good for the game.

Faustavian23 votes

Maybe because you're not supposed to dodge champ select and actually play the game instead of encouraging people leaving if they don't like someones certain pick and forcing people to go through a shit ton of lobbies just to get into a game. Terrible idea, why not add a quit button during the game too so you can "properly" leave mid-game.

Riot has already gone out of their way to encourage dodging as a mechanic if you don't trust champ select

ExplodingFist666 votes

Isn't encouraging people to dodge a good thing? Aside from longer queue times and trolls, this feature will probably let people win way more selective games by dodging matches that were [most likely] already lost in champion select

Prozzak3 votes

No, encouraging people to dodge is the worst thing they could do. They already penalise for it, so why would you think they would want to encourage you to dodge?

WeaselRune3 votes

I long while back I suggested a "dodge and report button."

It was met with all the same "dont encourage dodging" this post is getting comments.

I suggested that sure it would encourage more dodging... for a while, then it would level off and even lessen because those reports would eventually straighten out the REASON for dodging.

AKA, the people that act an ass and cause people do dodge would get ranked restrictions, or bans for ruining lobbies.

I dont support a "dodge enhancement" to make it less annoying, but I do support a dodge and report button. I think it would serve the game overall and make fewer dodges after the problem people get sorted.

I'm going to dodge a Zoe jungle troll pick and you can eat a bag of dicks if you expect me to play that game out when the outcome of a Zoe jg is obvious.

Well a lot of players dodge whether you like it or not, I don't think people want to lose LP, because someone is clearly out to ruin the experience in the lobby alone. For instance someone banning your champion for the lolz, and ofc claiming he will be inting/trolling etc. I made the mistake of calling a bluff on a person like that, lets say I lost LP that time.

Most games are lost with bad team compositions and bad champ selects.

It takes 5 seconds to log in. And you won't be able to queue for 5 minutes so it doesn't matter how long you take to load.

OP did say... Quality of life change more than anything..

JuiceBoxP2 votes

And the paragraph right after the one you quoted

{quoted}

This is more of a QoL change if anything but it will be useful in certain situations

QoL - Quality of life

You didn't read that part?

Crystalysk1 votes

I did read. He wants the QoL change because of the time it takes to load the client which doesn't make sense since like i said it takes 5 sec to log in and you must wait more than 5 minutes to queue... I can't see the problem.

JuiceBoxP2 votes

He doesn't want to close the client. He wants to spare the extra effort of logging back in...

That is exactly the qol change he is requesting. There is nothing to protest here. It's the little things that matter at the end of the day

Crystalysk1 votes

People dodge a lot already, sometimes it takes 15-20 mins to start a game and i'm only plat elo. I don't want to wait 30-40 minutes just because of a not needed button. I have to work all day and can only play few games during the week so 15-20 minutes make a big difference between playing 3 or 4 games. If you think it is worth to trade 5 seconds needed to log in with 10-20 minutes longer queue times then something is wrong.

I'm actually impressed people are requesting something like this, but this is probably a request coming out of someone who is free all day and lazy as f***.

You can't really assume everyone is just going to dodge twice as much with a dodge button... saying you're going to instantaneously add 10-20 minutes of queue time just thanks to a dodge button is a bit exaggeration and a bit nonsensical.

People already dodge games they don't want to take by exiting the client. Do you really think it's gonna make them say "hmm.. dodging is so easy nowadays... maybe i should do it more often..."? Well, i bet you do, but i really don't. You state those assumptions as if they were facts and you can see the future. No, they are not facts and neither of us really knows what it's going to be like if this feature was added.

But i am optimistic.

Crystalysk1 votes

Then you don't know how people think. Because everytime something is easier to do it is going to be done more than before.

This is a fact that applies everytime.

And yes, even if i can save just one minute of queue it is worth for me. More than the 5 seconds and little effort it takes to load a client.

JuiceBoxP1 votes

Well, i might not, but this post has 77 upvotes. It is clear what people want

Crystalysk1 votes

And if you don't get it, it is going to save 1 minute for 9 different players. So 5 seconds of 1 player<1minute of 9 players.

EDIT: 77 upvotes of people who will come here complaining about long queue times after

MasterDClone1 votes

my old pc use to take 15 min to log in to the client so i always played the game out because loading on the client and waitting a dodge timer is already an eternity, this doesnt seem like a bad change, there is still the -3 lp and 5 min penalty but now you dont have to log back in. So I def see the benefit to this type of change

Crystalysk1 votes

Were you playing with 5 fps with ultra low settings? Because i have never heard of a pc that takes 15 minutes to load LoL client.

MasterDClone1 votes

10 fps if i was lucky but ya my laptop was shit.

Crystalysk1 votes

Let me just say you shouldn't even download a game if you can only play it with 10 fps, it's just a bad experience.

Dodging should not be a mechanic. I play out all my games and have pretty good success. The best feeling is encouraging a toxic team to work together and they actually do ! It only takes one to defuse a situation but it will always take two to start something.

Dahaaka6 votes

That's is just a great idea, Ppl dodge in many occasions: 1 - troll picks from team 2 - autofill - better lose 3 lp and 5-15 min for another game? or lose a full game with 15-23 lp 3 - irl occasions! I am sure that many players having that: starting a game, getting into champ select and then u get a phone call or ur friend comes by so u have to leave the game 4 - or u just changed ur MIND during the champ select, even that can happen.

I am sure there are more reasons for dodging, undoubtedly voting for it!

rabirinsu4 votes

btw, I don't know why a game client in 2019 still doesn't have a LOG OUT button. We have to close out the entire client just to log on another account

Eleshakai3 votes

As long as it is clearly signposted with the penalties, I have no problem with this. If someone dislikes the team comp, I'd rather they dodge than whine all game.

iiGazeii2 votes

It would be interesting if an official dodge button had a certain number of uses before it started imposing penalties, and the higher your Honor score, the more free dodges you'd get.

TengenToppaGnar2 votes

Well, how about we do it like this. "3 out of 5" Dodge Mechanic You can't troll your team with 3 people, thus, if 2 people are obvious trolls. We just need the other 3 to vote "YES" to a Game Cancel. No penalty if you dodge this way. Now, there might be some abuse here, so we limit your ability to CALL FOR a vote, you only get 1 chance to call, until you complete one normal/ranked game and you get another.

funkdubious22 votes

The act of dodging is strategic. Bad team compositions is a waste of time for both teams.

They already penalize you 3 LP for first dodge in 24h.

Just make it formalized UX in the client. Doesn't harm anyone, and makes it clear that ALt-F4/Dodge will still cost you some LP or the 5m timer.

Curious Kat2 votes

Auto-fill is enough reason alone to justify a dodge button. Id'e rather wait to requeue, than sit through a loss of 3 auto fills bitching at eachother for 15 minutes.
