Why does it feel like all control wards do

Is spend 75 gold to give the enemy team 30?

Every time I put one down three enemies just jump on it, then on me and my adc killing all in half a second. It just feels like such a waste of resources, especially when I'm spending my first 1500 gold just to light up the map in the first place, only to have it destroyed without doing anything useful. That's half an ardent censer. Half a knight's vow. All to give half the gold away to the enemy.

Oh yes, the relevant screenshot

You’re not wrong, but they are critical for three main things:

Denying/clearing vision:

  • Baron
  • Dragon
  • Jungle areas
  • Setting up to ambush some dumb poor soul

Catching a gank: You throw it down in a bush, only to see the jungles walk through or clear it. Boom you now have the knowledge that they’re there to avoid a gank for 75g. But what if the laner(s) cleat it? My next point...

Maintaining control: Don’t put one down if you don’t have control, power and threatwise. They’ll be free to clear it. Thrown it down if your pushed up to avoid ganks. Also, in situations where you have control (mainly bot lane), you can chuck one in a lane bush to increase your presumed threat level and you can instigate a fight over the thing.

Bonus: Thrown it down in a hectic fight so it accidentally gets clicked on instead of the intended target

Bad luck. Ya. it sucks that it happens sometimes, but they help offer secure baron or drag plays by cancelling wards. plus it can help you clear out enemy wards for your jungler.

Their useful, just not that much as actual wards, with the exception of the side lanes in certain bushes
