A Compromise to make Morgana a little more viable, without actually making her OP

Illabethe··18 votes·10,487 views

Here's a simple proposition for Riot, to get things started:

Increase Morgana's attack range!

https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_champions/Range

Notice where Morgana is on this list?

Only 4 Ranged champs have a lower auto attack range than Morgana: Thresh, Rakan, Urgot, and Mini Gnar.

Let's look at that list: Thresh: has gap closers, extensive pull control, scaling armor, damage, as well as the most usable ally relocation tool in the game (Sorry Ryze; yours is an Ult, and has a charge up) Rakan: Relocates himself, speed boost, and is actually a SUPPORT. Team heals AND shields. Urgot, Relocates self, tanky, one of the highest dps in the game, low HP execute, Shield that's almost spammable, disrupts skills, auto attack speed/range boost on W. Gnar: more of a bruiser, compensates with a % HP damage Boomerang with a reset capacity.

Why is Morgana, one of the universe's most powerful species, an Angel, who has one of the weakest damage sustain abilities......outranged by the entire League roster?

To put this into context: Annie was recently buffed from 575 to 625 Auto attack range! The little girl has a better auto attack than the adult angel!

Should Morgana have a longer auto attack range?

i think a 50 range increase would be more than enough to make her life easier, is not like her autos hurt like lux passive

Illabethe2 votes

You know what? I'd be fine with that as a starter. I'm never one to endorse OP mods, so incremental improvement is always something to try. It's at least help last hit some of those 5 hp escapes, or poke a Kai sa in lane who steps a little too close.

Sir Saltarin6 votes

I dont know man she already zones anyone on botlane like a mother***er giving her more harash tools may not be the best idea

Illabethe1 votes

You call 38% in LCS, 49% overall, and only countering 2 champions bot lane...... Zoning? Her W doesn't even play a role in bot. The only success she has in bot at all, is if she gets a clear line Q.

She has one of the lowest gold averages in Bot lane as well.

Caitlyn and Jinx and Sivir zone stronger than she does.

Sir Saltarin4 votes

What does her winrate has to do with how she zones lmao, that's non sense because that takes in count her pickrate and her overall strenght when I was just saying that she can zones really well.

And I she's specially good with Caitlyn on her side dunno why you compare her zone against her when most games both are on the same team, like, if both toguether are abusive now imagine how would it be with Morgana having long aa range awsell.

No thanks, wait, I'm a Caitlyn player, I should want that to happen so I can duoQ with my friend that plays Morgana, go ahead and buff her range.

FakeGravity1 votes

i play a lot of morgana, her W is mostly pointless as source of damage early on, what does work is how reliable she can proc spellthief with it and not use a powerful tool she might need to disengage, sure it cost quite a lot of mana to be spamming it, but if your only goal is to get the money and dont die in a tough lane morgana is not easy to zone away from the gold unlike other champions

soraka for example could find herself having a hard time landing Q and not wanting to waste the silence, while janna cant get close in some match ups if you are losing, but morgana have a much easier time just landing W and getting a proc of spellthief which is why she was a money making machine back when spellthief didnt had the per cast limit

Illabethe2 votes

I'm sorry but I play Soraka, and if Soraka misses a Q, she can still get her auto attack proc. I can also almost guarantee a double proc on Soraka off her Q/E. You use E to zone a champ hard, in a location where they can only walk one way to avoid the root. Then you Q that escape route. Instant 3 procs.

Morgana in that time gets 1 proc off W, is minion blocked on Q, and has no damage on E.

A 12 second skill is not reliable at farming Spellthief. A 4 second skill is.

Saianna1 votes

morgana works quite good against aggressive bot and her spellthief is solid, really :)

Illabethe1 votes

She really doesn't, and ALL stats support my opinion, not yours.

Literally every single tracked metric isn't even close to top tier. Her only well performing stat is Assists. Gold, Damage, etc, she's underperforming all other champs in the entire GAME when taken as a whole.

She is performing at 38% in tournament play in 240+ games since January. Not even pros are carrying with her.

Saianna2 votes

i'm not saying she's god-tier support. All I am saying is, when enemy team is the kind that just pushes you, morgana shines the best. Exactly like teemo excels in defense and turtling up.. Or at least he was untill Rito made ward-spotting so common.

Secondly, you compared soraka with morgana. With sorakas case, you get 1 spellthief per cast or hit. So to get 3 stacks you have to keep on attacking relantlessly, but its fine as you have to do it anyways. In morganas case all you need is just 1 E and you get all 3 stacks within a second. And you don't have to poke anymore. You wait for 3 stacks again and use E again. Several times less work than in Sorakas case. Maybe her pool has much longer cooldown, but when comes to spellthiefing, she's the very best. Why she doesn't earn more gold or deal more damage? I dunno. Tbh she doesn't even need to farm for AP, cause Riot made her AP ratios somewhat crappy, so she'd really have to go full on AP stacking to make any difference. Thankfully her base damage + whatever AP you get is more than enough to be solid disengage/catcher support.

Don't even mention competitive play, cause that's the different world.

She's somewhat like Zyra-support I guess. Used to be mage but now is confused.

Illabethe1 votes

Soraka Q is up every 4 seconds vs a 10 second spellthief recharge. Her auto attack is longer than any adc but Caitlyn or Jinx. E is a guaranteed hit. Q is a guaranteed hit if you use E wisely.

I do over 15-30k damage a game with soraka on a Support build. Dunno what you're trying to imply.

You are extremely out of date when looking at Morgana.

  1. Her Pool is W, not E (E is Black Shield)
  2. Her Pool has only proc'd ONCE per cast since about 2 years ago. They removed the dot instant proc before Season 8 even started.

You mention competitive play AND solo/duo. In Solo/Duo, she's 49%. In Pro play she's 38.6%. And the best players playing her are only pulling 55%. That's tiny compared to the meta, which is 62-78% Win rate champs with a huge spread from their averages.

She is nothing like Zyra. For one, Zyra can still insta proc every charge on her Spellthief.

Second, her Kit doesn't bypass minions

Third, her kit doesn't do NEAR as much damage

Fourth, Zyra has 575 Attack range

Fifth, Zyra can clear waves at any point in the game. Morg can't and her clear is dependent on the last few ticks, not the first, so clearing is LONGER.

Saianna1 votes

Ah I see.. It happend when i took a break from LOL. Oh well, was fun while it lasted. Also I typo'd It's not like I remember each champion, each ability and exactly which spot they are in.

By saying she's like Zyra I meant more "a mage forcefully trapped in supports position"

And I said it myself, Morgana has low damage overall. And because her AP ratios are shit, she either has to go full AP, or just stay as support and work with what base damage she has.

FakeGravity1 votes

that might be true in most match ups, which makes soraka good, but the problem with soraka is how she can get punish for trying to be aggresive like that in some lanes, if a thresh and lucian poster aggresively soraka cant risk her position, morgana on the other hand can reliable use her W once in a while even in hard match ups and not risk dying since she can deny the enemy the engage with Q and E more easily, not to mention she build zhonya

The only success she has in bot at all, is if she gets a clear line Q.

The success is partially Q and partially E. Not only Q. There is a successful morgana E pathing in high Elo, which proves it if you wanna dig for it.

I would rather see a change to her Passive more than her Range.

She's extremely reliant on abilities. I think the increase in range would just let her be a little safer in Mid-lane.

from 475 to 625 Auto attack range

This is wrong, she had 575.

Illabethe2 votes

amended. still doesn't dismiss the fact Morgana, a ranged mage..... has no auto attack Utility while literally the entire rest of the mage arsenal does. Her auto attack range is arguably why she is perma support role right now.

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

The heck you mean "Auto attack Utility"???

Illabethe1 votes

Every mage more or less lanes with about 30-40 of their wave clearing being auto attacks or auto attacks poking the opposing lane champions. Only Morgana has such a low auto attack range that this is not possible without taking massive trade losses.

They also nerfed her mana regen into the ground, so in a solo lane, she either has to choose 1) be punished for auto attacking or 2) use all my mana in 3-4 casts and be useless until I recall.

Kalikain3 votes

Uh no, she is a champion that abuses people who cant stand behind minions. Why would I want her to have range to punish people who stand IN minions? Get out of here morgana main.

Illabethe4 votes

So..... you don't have a problem with..... Neeko...... Zyra..... Annie.... All of whom can do both, have higher damage and gold outputs?

What about Sivir/Caitlyn/Varus as well?

Except for morgana has one of the longest range roots in the game, so she outranges all three of those examples. Plus Morgana counters anyone with cc by clicking a shield, so you can't really argue lux/zyra/nami range down bot.

If you think morgana needs a buff even more, than you need to just get better. She is perfectly fine where she is at. I'm so glad the rework was pretty much all visuals on her, she didn't need the kit change like kayle did.

koshkyra2 votes

Isnt she pick/ban right now?

Illabethe2 votes

She has a high pick rate because Pyke is meta. However, it's not helping people who pick her. She's 49% win rate in solo/duo, and 38.6% in Pro play.

theChibiTina1 votes

Plus I have a better time counter picking Pyke with Soraka than Morg. lol. I love morg, but they kept nerfing her because she was the counterpick to the meta supports like Thresh and Pyke. I think increasing her range just a little is a good way to buff her without making her op. The MS on her ult is nice and all, but you're still a squishy who will often time zhonyas so you don't die while ulting which makes the ms kinda worthless.

Saevum2 votes

Zed and Yasuo can have untargetability while ulting, but not Morg. And Vlad and fizz just like to dodge everything every 10~ secs. But not Morg

Daddy ReTaric2 votes

To be honest , fact that Riot left her passive untouched bother me. I want to play Morg mid but they touched nothing of her kit so she isn't viable mid even after her rework. I'm annoyed.

RlTO lS TOXIC2 votes

Nah she's fine. Land Q good. Miss it? shouldn't be rewarded. She's balanced for support and that's all she needs to be. Morg mid is braindead and promotes no lane interaction.

Ranmiaku2 votes

morgana is already too fucking strong, and if you think otherwise you're clueless, unlike most champs she can just walk straight at you without having to worry about getting cc'd in trades, that black shield is soo fucking broken its not even funny, and the fact that she takes very little skill is enough for her not to be doing any more damage etc (which she already does too much of)

Illabethe1 votes

Your opinion is based on the champions you play, not the totality of champions. I'm sorry you feel that way but it doesn't describer her aggregate performance.

IbMcFly2 votes

illabethe...initially, when reading this post in it’s entirety, I dismissed you as a hater. You constantly threw out stats, but never cited your sources, except a wiki link to show Morgana’s aa range. You dismiss her entire kit as subpar, when she’s got 2 stuns, an AOE damage skill shot that increases when enemies are a low health, a spell shield, and decent damage output(well get to why your damage output wasn’t high). It was early on that I realized you just don’t really understand either Morgana or the support role. Your definition of zoning involved win rates, when zoning is an in game mechanic employed to deny cs exp, which Morgana is capable of and excels at in the right situation. You claimed she was just a spell shield support lol, pros might put a second rank in E early, but Q IS The first maxed. I’m sorry that your lack of game understand caused you to not do as much damage with Morgana as she is capable of, prompting to you look at what was wrong, instead of looking inside your own mind and abilities you decided to question the AUTO attack range of a champion. Like someone said here, it’s your fault your not getting your desired damage output from Morgana, not an inherent disadvantage in her kit. Practice more maybe?

Anu3isII1 votes

I prefer her low Range/high Damage AA over the normal Mage AAs since her AAs make her all-in more powerful than people think.

Btw, Annie's Range has been reverted and it isn't like she has really low Range on all abilities compared to Morgana. Really weak comparison.

And bringing lore isn't that great of an argument from balance perspective. I could easily argue that Mages use very weak spells that cost little to nothing as AAs. Morgana just prefers to get a bit closer.

Illabethe2 votes

Annie has not been reverted....

Her Autos are not high damage. They have decent AD scaling, but she never gets the opportunity to use them, and Lich Bane can't even reliably proc on her. her AD is only 10 more than average mages, and the fact she can't reliably use lich bane makes her the WEAKEST auto attacks.

  • Except..... Morgana's weak spells are just that..... weak.... meaning she has no strong side.
Anu3isII2 votes
  • It is a revert:

Patch V5.9 General Attack range reduced to 575 from 625.

They specifically mentioned it is a revert in their recent change (Patch 8.17):

Right now, Annie doesn't really have gameplay outside of dumping all of her spells at once. Returning to her longer attack range lets her trade and harass with autos as an alternate pattern of aggression. ATTACK RANGE 575 ⇒ 625

  • Morgana does auto a lot in 1v1 all-in situations, especially after level 6. You can't tell me that her Q Root and Ultimate Stun don't offer her plenty of time to Auto-Attack people. After level 6, she can kill people in one rotation by mixing her autos and Ignite alongside her abilities.

  • How many Mages can proc Lich Bane reliably? And how many do actually buy it? By your logic, most Mages have the weakest Auto Attacks (which is a fact compared to other classes).

  • Her Auto-Attacks are supposed to be weaker than the usual AP caster. Why? Because she already has the tools to farm safely (her W).

Anivia Annie Cassiopeia Vladimir KarthusZilean are in the same boat, having some of the worst Auto-Attack animations because of their farming power through high Damage AoE abilities or spammable one-target spells, forcing them to exhaust their resources on farming. Otherwise, they would have an easy time in the lanning phase, making them oppressive or impossible to engage on as they scale into late game.

It has been a design philosophy that Riot created and maintained for a long time.

  • In short, Morgana has weak AAs because of the amount of power her kit already has. Buffing her AAs would automatically lead to a nerf somewhere else (most probably her W).
Tobykachu1 votes

Morgana is still a very strong pick in the current meta. Her black shield is invaluable against certain champions and her Q is an extremely powerful tool in lane and catching people out. I don't see why she needs/deserves any buffs.

Illabethe1 votes

Sorry but every single statistic in the game proves otherwise. She is not strong on damage, sustain, killing, mana control, or countering any single class of champions.

Her spell shield could be her only ability and you'd probably call her "very strong."

Fact is she has the worst gold income of all supports, least damage, one of least kills per game, can't stop a game collapse...... and literally becomes dead weight mid/late game.

If she was "very strong" she wouldn't be 38.6% Win rate in tournament play.

Tobykachu1 votes

She is not supposed to be dealing obscene amounts of damage with the sheer utility she provides. Brand, Zyra and Vel'Koz are the only true damage based supports that see regular play and they sacrifice a LOT of utility for their damage.

Instead of sustain she offers one of the best shields in the game, which gives her adc the freedom to play aggressively than other shielding supports could in the same match up. Against Lissandra, Malzahar, Malphite etc.? Pop a black shield on your adc suddenly they can run at them without having to fear getting cc'ed and blown up. Janna, Lulu, Sona and the likes certainly can't offer that level of protection and they don't have anywhere near as powerful laning phases as Morgana.

Her kill pressure is weak? Maybe if you can't land Q's in lane, because if you can then she absolutely has a lot of kill pressure in lane, as long as your adc actually follows up on it and almost none of the 'pick' based supports are actually able to solo kill their lane opponents without help from the jungler/adc.

I think the website you're using is buggy, because all the ones I've looked her have her in the top 50% of gold earnt in the support role. She can get procs on her spellthief's easier than almost all other supports thanks to her W being able to reliably proc it from a large distance. Just because she doesn't get the gold every single time her W damages an enemy doesn't mean her gold income is weak in comparison to other supports.

How many supports do you know that actively get mana refunds? The only one I can think of is Bard from collecting meeps. Mana control is an essential part of all champions that use this resource, why should Morgana be any different?

She may not be the strongest support at the moment, but if she was weak enough to deserve buffs then she wouldn't be seeing any picks in pro play at all.

Illabethe1 votes

You obviously never played Morgana in Season 1-7. You're trying to typecast one of the best mages in the game as a shield spammer.

She is not a support. She is an ex mid-laner. Who has a damage kit.

That's like calling Kayle a support. Or Nidalee a Support.

And no site has Morgana over 8600g average a game.

Tobykachu2 votes

I started playing in Season 4 and never in all these years has Morgana ever been referred to as 'the best mage'. She has always primarily been played as a support with the ability to be a somewhat viable mid laner.

She is not the only champion designed for one role, only to find their kits be more viable in another. Vi was designed as a top laner, but now she's only seen as a jungler and her kit is balanced around being a jungler.

Riot recently released a statement on what sort of things make a champion too powerful. Things on this list included having an extremely strong late game whilst retaining a passable early game, multiple mobility spells and also the ability for that champion to be flexed into multiple roles. If you want Morgana to be strong as both a mid laner and support then she'd need power taken out of another aspect of her kit.

Neither Nidalee or old Kayle offer any CC whatsoever and only a mediocre heal. Kayle also has her extremely powerful ult, but definitely not enough to justify her incredibly weak early game in which she brings almost nothing to the table in the bot lane and as a result, neither see much play in the bot lane at all. Would you, by that logic, call Sivir a mage, just because her Q has an AP ratio?

The website I'm currently using only has the mages I mentioned earlier and Pyke as having a gold average of over 8,600 per game. Morgana currently sits just under that threshold at just over 8,400. If you want to earn more gold as Morgana, build full ap and get more kill credit than other supports.

Illabethe1 votes

In Season 4 Morgana was 88% Mid lane rate. Learn to lie a little better.

Tobykachu2 votes

If that's the case then I simply don't remember it very well, as I never recall her being an issue in the mid lane despite this being the only role I played at the time.

Though, the fact this is the only point you respond to makes me hopeful you've realised Morgana is nowhere near as weak as you think she is.

Tobykachu1 votes

I've also just checked your OP.GG and seen you have an 80% win rate on Morgana over 30 games... how much higher does it need to be for you to be happy?

Illabethe1 votes

That's at low elo, and in many of the games I was carried by a team who outperformed me. When a team picks 5 squishies and solo fight morg..... run straight into Q's...... well...... it's not hard.

Tobykachu1 votes

You're putting yourself down too much. 80% win rate is insanely high and I doubt it came down to you getting carried every game.

Okay, try to farm properly the wave before getting 1 or 2 AP item and W under level 3. If you don't AA them you will never farm anything. She is a mid lane primary but people take her support because she can't clear wave as fast as she should. Hell AD assassins just push the waves to your tower and shove it down your throat while assassinating you.

yup, just straight delusional.. what you just said is what morgana does mid every single time, spam w on the wave then poke you down under your turret, the champ already doesnt require any skill at all, she doesnt need increased aa range at all, since she can still safely walk up and aa minions since she has that broken ass black shield
