@meddler: here is a way to buff garen for more experienced players

give him his animation cancel mechanics back.

i know he still has the ability to cancel his auto attack and ult animations to some degree. but im specifically talking about his auto attack + q + auto attack + spin animation cancelling combo, that was mostly removed as a result of his visual update, when his q animation was changed significantly.

it was a way to give experienced garen players some way to add some extra frontloaded damage in a trade or on a well performed engage.

i know as part of his visual update you specifically removed the ability to pull a fast auto attack/decisive strike combo from his kit. maybe back then, you werent sure if you wanted animation cancelling to be a legit part of a champions playstile and power budget.

but since it is considered to be an acceptable mechanic today (riven specifically being balanced around it), maybe it would be a decent idea for a buff to return this mechanic to him, and allow experienced garen mains to separate themselves from the crowd by properly being able to cancel his q animation.

Honestly, if they remove animation cancelling across the board, I would be so happy. Looking at you riven. League is not guitar hero; faster clicking should not be what makes you better in a fight. What makes someone good at a champ should be skill management, aim, positioning, knowing ability ranges thoroughly, building right, and comboing properly. Animation cancelling is just a bug that became a strategy.

Lee sin ward hop is a strategy. It costs him wards in return for increased mobility, and it is thoroughly telegraphed. With a champ like riven, her power budget is ridiculous. They have to make her accessible to players who can't cancel animations, so they make her broken for those that can. And what do people get out of that? If they increased her spells' damage and didn't allow for cancelling, she would be much more balanced. I'm not sure how turning what should be a spell into a spell+auto is any fun. It's just a statcheck.

Minigames within fights I'm fine with, such as Draven's axes or Fiora's passive, but in those cases they actually add interactivity for both sides of the fight. Animation cancelling is a hidden power minigame, where a combo that is supposed to be 600 damage turns into 1000 damage.

maybe, but animation cncelling has become a standart practise on a lot of champions.

most auto attack focused champions have auto attack resets, or they can even buy them with item actives, and use those to cancel some of their animations.

garen used to be able to do it aswell, but his VU changed his q animation in a way where its much slower and cant be cancelled anymore, and followed by a quick auto attack.

i suspect they didnt like the mechanic back then, or were not sure if they wanted to keep animation cancelling in the game. but now theyve clearly made up their minds on this.

Honestly, i'd probably quit league if they did that. Animation canceling is core to this game on every champion and a huge reason on why it feels that fluid. And it's not a bug, it's perfecly intendet. Your main issue seems to be riven, and she's a special case, because her Qs have hidden AA-resets that are only accesible with animation caneling, allowing her to boost her AS.

Normal Animation canceling can't do that, it just allows you to use the time between two attacks for other things like repositioning or other abillitys, but it can't decrease the time between two AAs.

Do we really need Frozen Mallet Garen to exist?

DeathBot6666 votes

Yes.

Its been a while since I've seen a frozen mallet complaint thread. All the "Bring back atma's" threads are nice, but I like hearing the classics every once in a while.

Thats not just animation canceling, thats a secret AA-reset hidden behind an animation cancle. While fun to use and rewarding for experienced players, hidden AA resets are horrible in terms of game-clearity and can be very frustraiting to face, especially for un-experienced players. If it would atleast state somewhere officially how it works, maybe, but that's not the case.(if i haden't seen leona clearing a ward with the tripplehit combo in a proplay a few years ago, i probably still wouldn't know her Q does secetly reset her AA a second time) And where's always the question whether such a mechanic makes sens for that champion or wether it gives unintendet powe(usually burst on a champ that should have a more extendet damage pattern) or just doesn't fit thematically(old Garens AA-Q-AA looke more fitting for an athletic assasin rather than a bulky soldier) so maybe other ways of adding power would make more sense.

i'd really prefer him getting back some tenacity on W to reward good timeing on it and help him a bit vs kite/peel again rather than makeing him more punishing vs other melees.

Pls Rito. My hit and run tactics in laning can be this much more potent.

Bonus points if I can get away with it before the silence wears off.

pretty much every champion in the game who has an empowered auto attack in his kit is able to animation cancel. in a lot of cases, the animations are even faster than the standart auto attack speed.

i dont see why garen shouldnt be allowed to do it.

i think he should be able to cancel his q animation with a movement command, just like riven is able to.

I didnt know about this mechanic. I do often AA + Q into E.

Also double fizz's E damage since we're already talking about buffing stupid shit

that would only make him more snowbally 1v1 if anything...which is not really great. I´d rather see them giving him much more resilence to cc (maybe when he´s moving in on the current ult-target?) and especially slows (yea, i know the q dispels slows, but as everyone and their mother has permaslows nowadays that really doesn´t help as much as it should).

It's not "considered to be an acceptable mechanic", and Riven is a bad example, since she pre-dates by far the Garen rework. All the more so since many Rioters complained about that and said that if they could remove it without too much work, they'd do it.
