If Malz had a single basic ability, would he play any differently?

So to premise my personal angle on this subject, i'm an ex-malz main, who dropped the champion after the rework. However i do play him in spells, as i do with every champion really, and one of my major criticisms about the rework was that almost all of his power hedges on the interactions between his abilities, and they each really lack individual power. Oh, and the effective removal of AD malz (for no expressed reason).

Now why i'm posting this is because i had a realization during one of my games, malzahar's power dependency on his interactions means you effectively treat his basic abilities (q,w,e), as a single spell. It's a little hard to explain, but in effect, because of the lack of individual power on the abilities it's better to just never use them, until all 3 are up or active. E.g. If you're W is on CD with more than 4 seconds, it's not really worth putting the other abilities on CD.

Just a little thought experiment, consider how would malzahar play differently, if instead of his Q,W,E he was given the same ability on each button, and you're ranks would increase aspects of the spell.

Casting Q,W, or E applies Malefic Visions on the target for 6 seconds, at 3 seconds the target, and nearby enemies, are silenced if malzahar is within 900 units of the afflicted target. You can reactive his W while Malefic Visions is on a target to spawn a voidling (with an ammo system). His ult increases the current duration of Malefic Visions by 3 seconds. (i use factors of 3 with the assumption of some degree of delay when it would come to refreshing his space aids)

It seems that it would be the same as the current version, assuming you consistently land the Q refresh... I mean if someone else feels it would play differently please explain how you come to that conclusion, but my ~3500 hours of experience in the game is simulating them almost identically...

Well, it's not just Malzahar that has a kit that meshes. Most mages will have abilities with greater effective strengths when they're used concurrently. Vel'Koz's W is much more effective when landed after his E, all of Brand's spells gain additional effects with the application of his passive, so on and so forth. Mages don't really have basic abilities, and those that do are generally weaker than the mages that don't. Syndra is always going to be stronger than Anivia in terms of burst, and Malz is going to be more proficient than, say, a Galio. (at least until the latter's rework)

I don't think he's weak for having a kit that relies on itself to become strong.

First off, when did i ever imply he was weak for any reason? Answer: i didn't, not that he is strong nor weak. I will say that his design seems to completely hand over player agency to the opponent, but that's doesn't imply weakness.

Now, Obviously mages have abilities which interact in many cases, but often the interactions are less pronounced as with malzahar. However, there should be a clear line drawn between a complementary kit interaction and a direct interaction. Complementary kit being like morgana's binding + pool, Ori E + R, or TF R + W. Direct interaction being something like syndra's Q + E, Brand passive + Q, or Vel's passive + R.

Alright, you seem way too confrontational and self-congratulatory there, so I'm gonna back off. Best of luck to your topic, and I hope you get the Malz buffs you're asking for.
