Why even bother to pick Sona over Nami with this "Better Nerf Sona" trend

Ulquiorra995··47 votes·9,132 views

Because right now, Nami does everything Sona does, only better. These two champions are very similar in what they bring to the table.

-Movespeed boost -Lane poke -Lane sustain -On-hit AA buff -Aoe hard CC ultimates

-Movespeed boost - This one Nami gets on every ability while Sona has to invest in it. Also, Nami's will be stronger in most situations on allies because, while it falls just short in base than max rank Sona E it has triple the scaling.

Oh, and Sona's E is the most underwhelming ability in the entire game to level up. 10+1 % move speed per level, wow. That's, what? 3-4 move speed to tagged ally for 1.5 seconds? Karma gets 30+5% on her SHIELD that also gives MS and is always at 60% if cast with Mantra. Lulu gets +1 second on her MS boost with 2-3x Sona's base and 3x her scaling and can be used as a pseudo-hard CC.

Lane poke and sustain - I put these together because Nami does them both with one spell. And that one spell deals more damage than Sona's Q + empowered AA (not counting power chord) and has better heal base (but slightly worse scaling) than Sona's heal and shield COMBINED (those heal and shield can't even compare to A SINGLE AUTOATTACK in effective HP). And it can also hit two enemies or allies if positioned properly.

And since Nami gets 2 of Sona's spells for the price of one, she has another spell to use. And it is an AoE hard CC, instantly making Nami much more likely to survive tight situations or secure kills for her carry.

On-hit AA buff - Sona gets to tag herself and allies for a single AA boost, Nami gets to tag a single ally for 3 AA boost. Nami gets better base until Sona gets level 3 Crescendo and a slow on her attacks. Consider that Sona had her passive greatly nerfed to make room for this new buff. That shifted a big deal of her poke power from herself to her ally, who will waste it in 90% of cases in soloQ. And if Sona ever tries to make full use of her tag in skirmishes, she's dead because she just came into enemy assassin/bruiser's range in order to tag her bruiser with almost-melee-range aura.

AoE hard CC ultimate - Sona also gets passive buffs to her base abilities... too bad those buffs are pathetic and don't even compensate for nerfs she received and might as eel not be there late game (+30 flat damage and shield. Wow.). Only advantage Sona gets is near-instanct cast. Nami gets better scaling, triggering her passive, near-triple range, lower early CD, uncleansable CC followed by soft CC.

I love both champions, but at this point I can't think of a single redeeming quality Sona has over Nami in terms of what they bring to the team.

//================================================================================== EDIT: One of the big problems is simply how Riot is treating Sona post-rework. I was actually excited for the rework for some time. Oh boy, do I hate it now. It's like they look back at things they wanted Sona to be able/not able to do and are, like, "Fuck that, let's just nerf her". Just look at her Q and W power shifts for example:

Her Q gained an on-hit AA-buff effect. In order to make room in her power budget for it, aside from obvious removal of a permanent aura, she took a substantial hit to Q activation damage and Q powerchord. But then, they decide to nerf the Q on-hit effect.

Her W lost a lot of base heal value and scaling, but gained a weak shield and a missing %HP scaling. Reasoning was that they didn't want Sona to just keep her ADC's and her own HP topped in lane, they wanted more of a combat-oriented/clutch heal spell. And that'd be actually nice - BUT THEN THEY DECIDE TO CUT THE MISSING %HP RATIO IN HALF, but with a whooping 'compensation' of +5 to base heal value. Oh, and increase the manacost. So now your heal is crap regardless if target is at 95% or 5% HP.

I thought the purpose of the 'rework' is to shift power from passive parts of her kit towards the more active gameplay. But nerf things into which said power was shifted enough, and the so-called 'power shift' stops being a power shift, and becomes a straight-out nerf.

No reason to pick her over Soraka, Blitz, or Thresh either.

Riot absolutely hates her ult and they believe that it is one of the most broken abilities in the game.

They also swear up and down that Staccato is OP, but instead of just giving staccato a non damaging power, they just nerf everything. Why they didn't just make it a damage amplifier similar to expose weakness is beyond me.

They also complained that she was non interactive, but they've nerfed her in a way that she is so extremely squishy that doing nothing but being a spam bot is the only way to play her. Considering that burst ADCs and hook champions are the meta right now, a super squishy immobile glorified caster minion champion is not exactly a good pick.

In case of other supports you might try to argue that she is different, that it's about comparing apples and oranges. But having ONE champion do everything she can do, but better... It's just sad. Like Riot just doesn't want her in the game.

I love Sona, i love Nami, i love supporting in general... but say, I'm in ranked champion select in a support position. If I have a choice between Nami or Sona i'm damn sure going to pick Nami.

I dnno i think you can poke more effectively with sona and you can't miss her abilities other than her ultimate. the range on her Q is huge and prioritizes champions and the rest of her spells other than ultimate have no skill to them. On the other hand nami has to land a bubble or she loses quite a bit of pressure. Sona doesn't have the same type of CC has nami at the cost of being more safe, while nami's cc and kit are more cc oriented. If you can land your skill shots and it works for the team nami is better but if you want to play a safe well rounded support i'd go with sona.

Nami doesn't need Aqua Prison to out-damage Sona.

Hymn of Valor: 40 dmg, 700 rng

Ebb and Flow: 70 dmg, 725 rng

Or we can talk about on-hits:

Hymn: 20 dmg, 550 rng

Blessing: 75 dmg, 550 rng OR donated to adc

I'll let Sona have a handicap and assume her adc knows wtf they're doing:

Sona: 40 + 20 + 20 + 28 = 108

Nami: 70 + 75 = 145

Sona still loses to Nami in base damage, despite getting a handicap. Nami's point-and-click damage is higher and safer than Sona's.

I feel bad for Sona but to me, this is not fair to say that Riot hates her when no one ever cares what has happened to Aatrox Elise Evelynn Kassadin Leblanc Lucian Shen Skarner Talon Taric and Zac.

Aatrox lost a lot of good abilities for his late game. Now he can't do much.

I've only heard Elise use to have better stats and do see that she doesn't have much to offer in-game but poke.

Evelynn is the same as Elise. She barely even has poke.

Kassadin has become a tank. He can't sustain without a lot of health.

Took away Le Blanc's silence on the hard (enough) to use abilities. Lucian got reduced attack, speed, and range. Still playable but not as powerful as Jinx or Kalista. Shen may have a buff, but he can't use his abilities like Renekton or Riven.

Skarner also got buffs. I hope he gets more love.

Talon lost his needed silence. I may hate being against a Talon with silence but it still is needed.

Taric (was for me hard to learn) only good as a tank.

Zac's abilities take too much health.

It Is I Emoto4 votes

kassadins rework is weak, they just turned him into a mobile bruiser, making it harder for him to assasinate, and leblanc lost her silence, though i thimk its healthy, because she has now more counterplay.. not sure about zac, but talon got a hard nerf. the silence allowed him to deal tons od damage, in exhange for being in range to enemies. also, luc really deserved some nerfs, being a quite hypercarry and being something lkke a adc version of yi.

about sona though, her auras got nerfed to oblivion, making her shield unusable, and giving her the same kit as nami, just more worse :v

Add in the empowered auto's, AP scaling and cooldowns, sona does more damage.

Sona, considering Power Chord: Staccato and assuming both Sona and ADC proc her Q:

At level 3: Power chord: around 40 + 30% AP Q on initial cast: 80 + 50% AP Q on-hit: 2x30+20% AP

Total: 180 + 120% AP at 8 second cool down

Nami, considering 2/3 hits of Tidecaller's Blessing:

Aqua Prison: 75 + 50% AP Ebb and Flow: 70 + 50% AP Tidecaller's Blessing: 2x25+20% AP

Total: 195 + 120% AP at 11 second cool down, 220 + 140% with 3 E procs.

Sona gains 40-60 base damage on her primary damage spell with each level. Nami gains 45 base damage and 30 heal - equating in better post-trade HP difference in Nami's favor even in best case scenario for Sona.

A thing to consider is that Nami's combo costs substantially more mana that Sona's (185 versus 50 at level 3), but that's because all of Nami's spells bring more than just damage.

-Nami's Q is a hard CC. This is invaluable in trades. -Nami's W also heals. If Sona uses a single W to heal post trade, mana difference becomes 185 versus 130. Considering Nami's W heal has higher base and scaling, if Sona uses W twice to match Nami's amount of healing, Sona actually spends more mana. -Nami's E also slows.

Okay, first of all I want to say you're awesome for doing all this math and breaking it all down.

Nami's stronger than I thought, in terms of damage, but if you play nami very aggressively you're gunna have serious mana problems especially in the early game, which can't be overlooked in the sona vs nami discussion

Sona can harass people relentlessly, whereas nami needs to be a bit conservative with her spells, especially her heal, because of mana costs.

Another plus for sona is it couldn't be simpler to harass people. Just Q auto, Q auto... Her main damage source, neither are skill shots and they do tons of damage.

Sooooo I'll concede that Nami is the stronger champ if you land her Q's, but I understand why people get frustrated playing against sona - you get harassed and zoned so easily and there's not much you can do about it, whereas with Nami at least you can dodge her Q

Not in the slightest. Nami has significantly higher base mana. She can afford to cast more spells and has a lot more time allowed to regen what she's already used before going OoM.

I shouldn't even need to mention Aria is one of the most expensive abilities in the game, despite being the weakest point-wise...

You can't really spam nami's spells like you can sona's Q

The downside to Sona's poke is that the actual Q bolts are weak; you need to go into 550 range in order to auto attack for the on-hit or your powerchord, which can be very predictable and risky.

Lvl 18 Nami has 2 more base mana than Sona.

Nami has 36 higher mana, but since we're apparently rounding numbers instead of actual values, Nami has 40 more mana at level 1. Learn how to math, 5 and higher are rounded up, NOT down. You're just blatantly lying about the numbers at this point.

Riot hates Sona. They refuse to tell us why they are doing this. They dont care.

It pains me really. The amount of people reaching out to Riot, asking for answers on Sona is pretty crazy. The entire page was full of Sona threads about a week ago.

Sadly, we get no responce, and it has become painfully clear where Sona is going to end up.

The majority of the champions in this game, that people deem bad, or useless, actually have a niche which they can preform in. They excel at something, while bringing another thing that another champ that excels at that same thing may not have. Sona, will have nothing like that.

Nami is the new Sona. Sona will be a legit useless pick, because she doesnt do anything better than any other champion in her role. Even Taric's heal does more. However, the only champion we can actually compare her too, is Nami.

Just looking at the math, which has been pointed out below, there is no reason to pick Sona over Nami. Literally none.

Even Nami's ult is better. It actually cc's longer if the enemy buys tenacity.

.

Diminuendo: If this spell was last cast when Power Chord is ready, Power Chord will also reduce the target's damage output by 20% (+ 2% per 100 AP) for 3 seconds.

Sona and Urgot are the only ones who can reduce damage output, rather than just damage taken. Granted, this doesn't make up for all the other issues. Just thought I'd play Teemo's advocate for a moment.

You're right about what you say, but I want to point out a couple of things:

Sona has a heal.

Sona's skill cap is lower.

Nami has a heal too. Heal stronger than Sona's heal and shield combined. Which doubles as a poke. Sure, Sona can tag more people, but her heal values are pathetic; Nami's heal is still stronger even with target at 1% HP.

So, basically, only reason would be that Sona has a lower skillcap. Like a 'training champion'. You learn to support better, you swap to Nami, you don't look back.

vscAloha1 votes

No, I've always preferred Sona, nerfs or no. Nami is super gimmicky to me. My heal does damage... sometimes? if they happen to be in range? I can damage them first... but then my carry loses healing. Nami heal is pitiful as well. And Sona heal is meant to prevent as much damage as possible, not top you off like Soraka. Heal +Shield right before poke lands is crazy good damage mitigation.

Pika3104 votes

Sona heal: 30 HP Nami heal: 65 HP

Nami heal is pitiful as well.

LOGIC

vscAloha1 votes

Sona has her shield as well, which easily bumps it up past 65, on top of that, you're only looking at the base heal. I was under the impression Sona's heal scaled based on how low health her target was?

Pika3104 votes

Ah, how could I have forgotten Sona's half-second melee-range shield? Oh right, by blinking.

Congratz, the crappy heal has a crappy % scaling. So that means, if your ally is at half HP, you're healing 35 HP instead of just 30 HP. That's SOOOO much better. So much worth increasing the CD by 43% and the mana cost by 20.

Btw, that was sarcasm. Aria is the weakest heal in the game, the weakest shield in the support class and the shortest-duration shield, whilst boasting the highest mana cost for either. Education OP.

vscAloha2 votes

Wait, why are we only talking about the level one heal? You mean you don't put two points in before you start maxing Q? Your loss. Try it, you'll find that it'll do a lot more.

Anyway, Sona has such a low heal because of the shield. at level one, both in total are giving you 65. 30 heal and 35 shield. And Aria also heals and shields Sona, so it actually does 130 at level one, if you're at 100%hp. Not counting shielding others on your team. At rank 5 the heal and the shield give a total of 275 with a .5 scaling. Not counting the heal on you or the shield on everyone. Sona's W is actually really strong.

Emmy Cha0s3 votes

Wait, Sona has a shield? Damn, I must've not noticed it. I have this strange habit of blinking, it probably happened during that timeframe. Darn it for being human and doing things like blinking...

How about this number: Thresh's shield at rank 1 give 100 points ( 30 more than Sona's) and lasts for FOUR seconds (nearly thrice the duration of Sona's "shield" ). Oh ya, it can also pull an ally a distance of 1900 units and has a cast range of 950. All whilst having DOUBLE the AP scaling of Sona's, or in other words equivalent scaling to Sona's heal AND shield COMBINED.

Never talk about Sona's numbers unless you're pointing out that they're complete shit. Every support in the game has better numbers than her.

vscAloha1 votes

Then why is she winning? Why does she win any game if she's basically a disaster in your eyes? zzz She wins 53% of her games, if the API is to be taken seriously. If her numbers are so bad, why is she so good?

Sona has better burst in her poke (a Q with a Q enhanced powerchord that has the Q aura AA buff will half health an enemy in lane in about a .5 second time frame), Nami's heal costs a lot of mana to do any actual healing, Sona is more AoE, she can shield a whole team on top of her heal, Nami can heal 1-2 people and she can only choose one of those 3 targets, Sona's ult is harder to dodge and doesn't have a longer channel time, Sona doesn't rely on follow up to make use of her AA buff as much as Nami does in lane.

Sona has one of the highest winrates in game (and she has a way higher winrate than Nami ATM) Sona just does more stuff because her passive has 3 uses and because her auras have 3 uses on top of her actives. Both supports are good in different cases. You pick Sona to poke more and for an AoE jack of all trades in teamfights. You pick Nami to set up all ins and AoE lock down enemies at a range. Basically Nami debuffs all the enemies at once while Sona buffs all her allies at once with both having just a bit of the other mixed in.

You clearly aren't familiar with the massive increases to Sona's mana costs...

They can't buff her because of her interaction with Ardent Censer. They wanted to move her from being an early-game poke champion - which they consider oppressive when combined with heal - to a late-game powerhouse. I main Sona and have about 300 games with her post-rework. You can very much feel the instant that she finished Ardent Censer, even if your allies can't.

Also, they're going to nerf her because her win rate has been spiking into the 54% range across all formats. People just missed how powerful she has become because they were focused on 60% Warwick...

P.S. - I made a similar thread about Nami vs. Sona right after the rework, but that was because I just didn't get it. Her fundamental identity changed.

I agree on the identity change part - you have 2 champions doing almost the same thing, one is bound to be better than other. That's the part of why I love supporting: there's a champion for every situation: You want to save and peel for your allies a lot, and you don't feel like getting a lot of kills? Go Janna. You want a good defensive support, but mixed with some CC for kill potential? Braum's your man. Have an ADC with great early damage who can get fed early? Pick Leona or Blitz. Enemy just picked Cait into your Vayne? Go with Soraka to negate a lot of poke. Want well-rounded supports with both defensive and offensive options, but lacking sustain? Thresh or Morgana. Want a generalist with a bit of everything? Nami and Sona.

Now, you can't really just say 'Leona is better than Blitz' or 'Braum is stronger than Janna'. They might have similar roles but they also have different strengths and weaknessess. Nami and Sona, on the other hand, are so similar that comparison, and the conclusion that one is always better, is inevitable.

I don't really feel the Ardent Censer has much to do with it. It's not an item most people build until the very end or after the laning phase.
