The game has literally devolved into which team counter picks harder at Diamond+

The mixture of the champion pool becoming too big and the champion designers' focus on trying to bring in 'new and exciting' mechanics has brought us to a point where almost every champion has one or more impossible match-up where they cannot function, no matter how well they play.

It feels like skill is almost totally irrelevant right now. You just have to pick a champion that your lane opponent can't do anything against and you can easily win, regardless of your skill level.

Is this really intended?

It's not really Diamond+, its everywhere. There's some matches it's literally impossible to farm, even under tower. There are quite a few champs that can dive without any consequence if they're fed. Yasuo, sometimes singed(but that's probably normal for them), etc.

I feel like the if-they're-fed barrier becomes more significant at higher elos, as people become increasingly aware of when they can be all in'd. I'd like to think if someone manages a solo kill, then their opponent will pay them appropriate amounts of respect to avoid them getting fed to the point of tower diving.

While I am a lowly plat pleb, how many champs really have hard counters?

Sure theres plenty of champs who don't do very well in whatever match-up, but off the top of my head full on hard counter you-cant-function level of champ countering is pretty rare.

That said, I do feel like pick/ban is intentionally supposed to be a strategically significant part of the game, so at diamond+ needing to work with your team (even in yolo queue) to minimise countering and counter-countering and so on doesn't seem that unreasonable. It shouldn't be that the game is decided by the end of pick/ban of course, but I'm skeptical that it's that bad.

Edit: I recognize you're pointing at cass vs Yasuo elsewhere on the forums. That's maybe 1 example, although I'm not 100% that it couldn't be played around.

Implying counter-picking is a bad thing in a strategy game.

They also feel the need to give every new champion a "niche", and by "niche" they mean "if you happen to pick this champion into the pool of champions that can do nothing against it you autowin the game".

sad part is you're not even wrong.

This is why you have to learn to play a lot of picks, not have a shallow champ pool. I like that idea tbh.

If you don't know your matchup in lane pick a safer pick.
