What is Ryze's problem?

RenownedWheat42··1 votes·1,471 views

His winrate is abysmal at all levels of play, but his kit has potential to dominate.

When I play him, I tend to lose games, though I always win lane even if I get ganked or somehow get behind. But his damage is insane (QEQWQEQ anyone?) and really hard to beat, especially in the laning phase. But any time I pick him, without fail, games just kind of fall apart, be it because of me, or anyone else on the team.

What exactly is the problem with Ryze?

The problem is, every time they rework Ryze, he ends up being too underpowered or too overpowered, they're SO desperate to keep the point-and-click snare + machine gun playstyle for him that they don't under stand that such a play style just can't be balanced unless they make his damage output weak if it spams.

I'm saying that machine gunning burst has never been healthy for any game.

Ah okay, in all honesty I have nothing wrong with burst, but I have a problem when it's like 0.5 seconds between each shot and bursts with AP crit.

Ryze is more DPS than burst though, and to do maxmimum damage you have to hit three abilities before his snare, two of which are skillshots that can be blocked by, well... anything.

True, you'd think after like the first 3 reworks that they'd get it that they just need to redo his ENTIRE kit.

But what does the problem come down to? If it was too powerful, he'd be seeing much higher winrates in all elos. If it were terrible, not even pros would play him.

Ryze's ability to lock down single targets and shred them is almost outmatched. Yet him just being on a team is often shared with that team losing.

Because his skillcap and floor is extremely high, someone picking him up won't do well with him. He does too much damage, with more than enough outplay potential making him viable for the pros

Ryze takes a bit longer to scale since the E nerfs. He's not one of those midlaners where you get a kill and it's gg. He needs item 3027 and a cdr item before he can really do stuff. That thing you said about winning lane and losing game is due to his short ranged nature. You need your team to atleast keep the enemy team busy for a couple seconds so you can start melting them. Think reworked KogMaw but with purely magic damage. If you're team is super far behind then the enemy might just ignore your team and go for you or they might kill your team in an instant leaving you to 1v5. Ryze's damage is insane but he pops like any squishy.

Because they refuse to stop giving him a 2 seconds snare with abilities that are spam-able. So the result is a champion that runs at you and roots you then Q's/E spams you while you are forced to trade. It's wouldn't be a problem but they also give him nice wave clear, a decent poke, an ultimate that lets him teleport himself. They think that his range is small but when you have a 2 second point and click snare, it's not too hard to grab a target with it. It's why they run Ghost with it.

At this point, I'd argue that the old Ryze was much better. Sure, all his abilities were point and click but he felt a bit more balanced. This was is just either underpowered or overpowered just because of his kit.

He needs another MAJOR rework. Remove his W complete and his ultimate.

Q, which is the main damage source, is not only a skillshot but also can be blocked by whatever is in front of him (minions or summons), and he has to stack E on it beforehand to do bonus damage.

His kit is close range and targets 1 champion unless he spreads runes which is impossible in teamfights.

Hard to land solo kills unless enemy is retarded, so whether you win or lose depends more on teammates.

Need late game to do real damage

Minimum 2 core (item 3003 item 3027) plus boots so it's hard to choose items.

His ult is good with zhonya but if he builds zhonya then he can't build something better.

After nerf on E cooldown, he's can't clear waves as fast, harder to stack runes and land combos (max E now, I've tried using cdr masteries but you lose too much dmg). W nerf is meh. Outclassed by other champions.

QEQ is a really easy combo to land imo, just requires positioning like most skillshots do.

EEQ, if you're feeling patient, takes a very short time especially when you get to the teamfight phase, and you can start to hit everyone. Even then, hitting one person at a time can still be really good considering he can lock one down at any time.

Enemy doesn't have to be retarded for you to know how to play. He's got a point-and-click snare and a RIDICULOUSLY easy to land DPS combo.

The rest, I agree with.
