Malphite presents too much of a predictable, binary kit and needs a rework

When I was bronze last year, I always got mad at Malphite players for being "noobs" and how OP he was. Now I sympathize for these guys and now I realize how weak he is compared to his counterparts. Malphite is extremely predictable in more ways than one, his main source of late game power is in his R, which can be useful if it was not so easy to predict. i don't even have to think about it to stay a little bit away from my team late game when Malphite is around, it's easily avoidable and his E probably provides more of AOE pressure than his R. In lane it is even worse, as his Q is a high mana cost nuke that really can't do anything for him. It's point and click and makes him lose out on essential mana that could be use for 2 other abilities. It does not do its job well either. Malphite in general lacks sufficient damage and tank stats to be of any viability in the current meta.

Some things I suggest could be changed are his ultimate, it's so simple and really is not all that good of a ultimate. It should be removed all together, as it does not fit his design of a armor-heavy tank. His Q shouldn't be a nuke either, it should be a more simple ability that he can use more often. It makes no sense having a starting ability cost so much yet provide so little. His E is basically AOE version of his Q that costs less and is more spammable. It is probably the most useful and balanced ability out of his whole kit. He needs to be able to provide more for his team than just damage, and if any of you say "oh wait his W gives him tanky stats" I don't know what to say to you, as this is very minimal and only useful when combined with item 3075 . That is all I have to say.

What definition of binary are you using? As far as I can tell binary doesn't mean simple, so what are you trying to say.

He can only do 2 things, apply mediocre AOE damage and tank. These are very predictable and compared to his counterparts who can do lots more he really doesn't bring much to the table.

Predictable and binary are fine as long as that binary isn't feast-or-famine. So his stuff's a bit basic and direct-- he's a simple tank that's simple to play and you know exactly what you're doing as Malphite. Charge in with that "HRRRRRRRRRGH" and make 'em fly. Get as many as you can at once.

In Malphites case he is too predictable for him to take advantage of his strong suits like he did in earlier seasons.

He could use a little something, but I think all he really lacks compared to his other tank friends is some hard CC somewhere in his kit. I'm not apt to comment on tanks, though; I prefer the likes of Nautilus and Thresh. I do like Malphite, but I wouldn't say I go crazy for him these days. I find Nautilus is very well suited to this meta, he can move around and move the battle.

My opinion is that they need to look at his W, but his E is kind of stale too. I actually think his Q, passive and ult go a long way for his kit so maybe if we look at those, let's start on the ult and see what we can do to give it some more dynamics.

That said? Malph's pretty much fully functional if, as you said, binary. There are far higher-hitting priorities with bigger problems. I forget the list but know it's got Evelynn and Urgot on it.

Evelynn Urgot Mordekaiser DrMundo Or something... maybe?

Honorable mentions out to Azir Kalista who need some number and function workings-over.

He is definitely viable in jg. I probably agree with you in that his laning potential is not measuring up.

He is underrated out of the jg though. Just not a popular choice and not many experiment with him. Malphite gains viability the glassier the opponent comp is as those comps have no way of keeping him at bay from blowing up their knot like a Gragas belly slam could do etc.

The meta is very light on tank usage out of support, top, or jg roles. I could probably smash with a bruiser AD build out of the jg but I use him as an engage tank to ruin the ADC or AP carries day in teamfights. Isolating their best carry and zoning them out of a fight usually carries the day unless they won all lanes in which case it doesnt matter what jger you selected youre going to lose that match.

His R ultimate needs no changes. Its one of the best teamfight engages in the game. If you miss it a lot you arent using it right, sorry.

I would give you the tip of not trying to use it much on solo fights against a Lee Sin, Kah Zix, or Jax who easily hop away before it lands.

Malphites ult has barely a noticeable wind up. I consistently smash carries before they can flash out or use an escape ability. You'll have to bait out EZs E ability before you ult for him also fyi. Q in, force him to E out to get distance, then hit him with your ult.

I can agree that Malph's kit is really too simple compared to the new champs. Then again, Malph's one of my power picks when I want to go top. His binary nature is beneficial in the sense that even with his two jobs (which is CC/Initiate, tank dmg and have at least some dmg to be annoying), he's much better at those jobs than most other tanks. Well, Galio can also do those jobs when you think about it, but Malph is a bit more consistent since his base damages aren't that bad and buying the new item 3001 actually helps since it grants him MR and gives him a small boost in damage due to the aura of the item.

TL; DR: Malph is not necessarily bad in the sense that his kit is too predictable and binary. He's those 2 yes, but overall, he's still a good pick of played right.

IMO though, he could use some tweaks to his kit, but not necessarily a rework.
