Mage support bot lane is a HUGE factor to why the game is so damage heavy.
time to address it.
time to address it.
There really isn't anything they can do to address it. Anyone can take any damage champion bot lane as a support, that's just how it is. If they start nerfing champions because they're occasionally taken bot, it's going to make them un-viable elsewhere (Mid for example), forcing them into the support role, or making them unplayable at all.
How do you propose they take care of the amount of damage mid champions pump out while playing as support without destroying their viability mid?
Well, with the suppression of the old rune system, a lot of squishy champions lost 15 mr at the start of the game. Granting back 10 mr might make lanes less opressives.
Not a bad idea, though I don't think the problem here is mid lane oppression as much as it is just mages being good bot vs squishy ADC's. It -might- help slightly, but if you take into account mid has become a home to quite a few AD assassins, that MR becomes meaningless. If you give mages armor, that just amplifies their strength bot lane.
But giving mr reduces mage's strength in botlane. Right now, ap poke in botlane is destroying it.

this would actually be a perfect response
Scaling instead of base damage....
That's something that will force people to play support at that point. Remember, it would have to be something that wouldn't nerf their viability in lane. Base damage matters to a certain extent, but it's useless if you can't scale with it.
Unless you're talking about it backwards from my sense. Reducing base damage and increasing scaling could theoretically work, but losing base damage on some mages is really gonna hurt them...and now that I think about it, we'd wind up where we started, since you wouldn't need a lot of AP to scale well. I don't think this is a viable solution without hurting their performance in other lanes.

probally by doing the same thing they did to force laners to not buy jungle items. riot is certainly capable of doing it. the main reason they are viable is because of gold generating items making it very easy for mage supports to get the burst items they want. before the introduction of gold generating items you could actually starve out a mage support as long as they were behind in lane which gave them a risk vs reward factor. right now there is zero risk to taking any burst mage bot because they will ALWAYS be either ahead or on par in gold.

so your solution is "nerf every single support in the game" just so that mage champions go back to mid lane?

not at all what i said. find a way to prevent or detour mages from buying gold generating items at the very least. or, better yet, make mid lane more attractive of a lane for champions like
there was a time where you only seen annie bot lane as a support. now literally any mid lane mage can go mid.
The way they did that though requires anyone who wants JG items to take smite. The JG and items are built in such a way that smite becomes necessary, but it makes sense on a JG. How do you propose they do that? Limit someone to taking a certain SS if they want income? That won't work.
Limit it to only certain champions? That won't work either. Just because something isn't a traditional support doesn't mean people don't support with it. We can't go restricting things like spellthief's to certain champions just because other people use it.
There's always going to be something that's stronger than something else. That's just how things work. Even if they somehow changed the game in such a way that you never see mages bot anymore, something else will rise up and become a problem. Then it becomes the opposite of power creep with Riot nerfing everything, which in the end wouldn't solve anything because suddenly everyone has been weakened proportionately to the point where it's as if global numbers were reduced instead of specific things being nerfed.
The problem isn't full ap supports. The problem is people don't play supports so when they get autofilled they play full ap mages.
lol dude i can build straight defense leona and take 1 and only 1 ap item of nashors tooth and have over 200 ap ......
Mage support is a big reason why you still have support players in your games.
Being a high win rate AP DMG only support (brand/xerath/fizz) I understand your frustration. The 1st 2 chaps have insane damage/poke. The 3rd (fizz) can all in lvl 3 but it takes a bit more coordination with the adc. The dmg is high, I don't mind it though b/c I would not play support if damage supp was not viable.
I agree, scaling based on position, like with JG.
nah we need people to sacrifice and teach those big, mean ADCs that supports too can carry :-)
... becuase a "mage support" is the cause of damage inflation from broken AD items, cheap ADC itemzation, overpowered crit, and runes that give burst for absolutely no reason..
this guy knows his stuff.. there could be not other explanation other than mage supports [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
