How do you nerf an asshole like Ivern?

Let's be clear. Despite all the "he's just a support in the jungle!","It's the items, stupid!", or, Riot forbid "You just need to learn how to play against him, scrub", Ivern is broke as all hell.

So he's going to get nerfed. Eventually. When the guys in Live Gameplay pull their heads out of their asses.

The question, then, is how.

The obvious one is his clear. He clears faster, with less effort, and with more time for ganking than anybody not named Shyvana. And that doesn't include his Nunu on crack level of counterjungling.

Another major frustration point is his shield. Namely, the part where it's constantly up and popping it does nothing to mitigate its annoying secondary effects.

Then there are the less obvious, less noticeable points of ridiculously inflated power. To wit, the vision on his W and the extra buffs that his passive allows him to leave lying around for his teammates.

So, here are the reasonable paths to nerfing him.

  • His clear: Either his health and mana costs can be increased and have the way they decrease per level nerfed, or his passive's interaction with Smite can be changed. Personally, I'm fond of having Smite not be an instant clear. Instead, using it on a grove would advance the maturation of the grove by half of the total time that maturation should take. (e.g. 30 seconds at level 1, 3 seconds at level 18)
  • His shield: This is the one that people keep asking for. The counter play to shield's damage and slow should be to pop it. It's already powerful enough as a shield. It shouldn't be a guaranteed slow too. So yes, when the shield is broken the damage and slow should not proc.
  • W gives vision, denies vision to enemies, and enables Ivern to deal damage. So the quickest route is to take one of these three away. For the sake of removing extraneous power, Ivern W no longer reveals around itself or grants vision inside of itself. That this enables counter play by allowing enemies to use Iverns brushes against him is just the icing on the top.
  • Ivern's ability to take buffs and leave buffs for his laners as well, effectively doubling them. There are many things that could be done with this portion of his power, but I feel it would be best moved from activating at level 5 to activating at level 11. When picking Ivern, his team should not be able to rely on a constant stream of red and blue buffs until he's actually had to spend a significant amount of time farming and ganking.

So, thoughts?

only thing I hate about the tree is when im mid and the enemy laner gets double buffs every time the buffs are up

make it so that he doesn't put me in lose-lose situations as a melee where I can either chase him, break his shield and still eat a slow for my troubles, or walk away from him to avoid the slow and lose my pressure anyway

^ This. Please. And the range on brushmaker early. 1600 is ridiculous. At least make it scale with his level.

They're going to nerf him one thing at a time. New champions get this weird benefit of being slowly balanced whereas older champions have to be nerfed into the ground and ignored for 3 years before they rework. Idk man. You're talking to a brick wall when it comes to Riot. They do things in a stupid manner.

you nerf ivern by nerfing redemption/locket.

core build for him thats extremely cheap and makes his ganks WAY stronger than they actually are.

You don't. :)

By buffing other junglers so they are more viable.

I'm goinna just say to get good -- he's really not that bad. He's VERY easy to beat, and he doesn't clear as fast as you say he does.

I wouldn't try to make his clear costs harder. Simply because there's not much else he can do to really speed up his clears.

Honestly they need to not make the shield punish players for breaking it.

I wouldn't necessarily want to make his clear harder. But that's why my preferred change to what Smite does for him makes his clear slower and makes counterjungling actually risky for him.
