Tanks, and the bad rap they get

Hi. I'm a Sion main. I main a champion who's sole purpose is to keep the enemy team locked down, and keep my team alive long enough to do their damage. I don't often get very many kills per game, and I don't complain when those kills are taken from me despite how much damage I did for that kill, or how much I want it to round out my KDA.

There are a lot of tanks that do what Sion does. I play them not as regularly as Sion, but I know enough. I see a lot of hate thrown at tanks, and I feel like there is a general consensus that tanks not only require very little to no skill, but that tanks themselves are something a lot of players hate interacting with. I get it. Truly, I do. Nobody enjoys being CC chained for a solid 5-6 seconds while they get melted by the enemy mage/AD. I hate it when I play non-tanks. The problem is, that's our job. There really is nothing else to it. If we DON'T do that, our team loses, and we get flamed (fuck, I've been flamed while we were WINNING).

Why are tank players that are good at their jobs seen as unskillful? Yeah, skillcaps and skill floors are a thing, and tanks tend to be a low skill floor, low skill cap breed. But we can't all be Faker or Bjergsen. I'm just not that good, and I don't enjoy those playstyles as much (maybe as a consequence of not being good at them.) I understand, believe me I understand that CC sucks to go through, but we are a necessary part of the game. Do you know how awful it feels for me to hear how much people hate the game when we're in a "tank meta"? That's like going in to work and doing what you love to do and are good at, and everyone whispers behind your back how much they wish you would just get fired, despite how needed you are at the company. It fucking sucks. It hurts. And then you have people going around telling basically lies about how too strong tanks are (No, Fuffy, tanks like Zac CAN'T assassinate you, no matter how much you talk about how they do it.)

Being a tank main sucks everywhere but in game.

Tanks are generally the least mechanically intensive class in just about every game they're in. However, they make up for this by requiring an objective-oriented/teamplayer mindset in order to get things done. Most people do not have this kind of mindset, which is why tanks and supports are generally the least played classes in literally every online game.

The only people that complain about tanks are the dime-a-dozen DPS players that only care about putting out big numbers, looking cool, and being in the spotlight. Half of them don't even know the difference between tanks and bruisers/juggernauts in this game, so I wouldn't even pay attention to them.

Yeah, it's always frustrated me how people can't tell the difference. I once got in to an argument trying to explain to someone that although Rank 7 Sion's mastery name is Juggernaut, and that although he is called the undead juggernaut, he is a TANK, and not a juggernaut. It tried my patience greatly

To be fair, it doesn't help that rank 7 tank title is Juggernaut.

It's so dumb.

The title seriously needs to be changed. In fact, blanket titles don't really make sense on champions anymore ever since the Class update. There are too many different kinds of tanks for one title to cover them all

sion isnt a tank tho. He doesn't have the broken aspects of current tanks to be considered one. No %damage reduction, low base hp, low base armor, a stupid passive that encourages you to die (when youre supposed to be building tanky?), and a dumb W passive which is being buffed so thats good i guess.

Oh boy, the definition of a tank does seem to be changing, doesn't it?

The most fun I have in this game is playing tanks and their ilk. Last season it was tank Hecarim, Volibear, and Sejuani. This season its Garen, Sejuani, a little Maokai and a little Shen. Tanks and their offensive friends, the Juggernauts, are really fun to play for me because there's nothing better than diving into an enemy team and being the hero that everyone needs, even if you don't get the recognition or praise for it. When I play support my first picks are almost always Leona or Nautilus just for the lock down, destroy my opponents with CC fantasy.

Yeah, I always thought it was weird that people would want to play champs that delete other champions in a blink. No real fun interaction there except for the killer.

Honestly - i think tank metas suck, but not because the tanks are too good at being tanks with cc.

Tank metas suck because they often arise in one of two fashions: Tanks have access to solid damage that let's them kill squishy champions in relatively little time (they're not bursting them, but a full tank should not 100-0 a squishy in 3-4 seconds)

Or

Tanks act as a second support (as appears to be the current pro meta).

The former sucks because tanks shouldn't have that much damage. It makes bruisers feel irrelevant. If bruisers are tanks with damage and less cc, but tanks have damage, there's no reason to play a bruiser. As someone who plays bruisers that meta sucks. You have your job and role to fill, don't try to put me out of a job. Sure, i could pick up a tank and effectively play my same role with more cc, but i don't want to spend time improving on a tank that's just going to be gutted because those damage levels aren't fair.

The latter sucks because enough people don't want to play support as it is. Now you have 2 support roles, or maybe even 3. Worse, you're forced to either put yourself at a disadvantage by not going a tank / top Lane support because they're the strongest option, or you need to rely on your 1-2 damage dealers to carry you in solo queue. I want control over my ability to climb. In either case I'm looking at suboptimal chances of winning games.

Tanks are NOT hated and do not have a bad rep. They're like supports, in general people don't want to play them but everyone wants them on their team and complains when they aren't. The difference is that sometimes tanks become popular because they're too strong, and those metas suck because tanks start to crowd out all other options.

The reason non-tank metas are better is because tanks are typically still optimal picks for most team comps and can shine in their role while not being overbearing (i.e. you can work against 1 tank's lockdown with peel and positioning and items like qss, but it's near impossible to deal with 3 tanks lockdown and you just need to hope your 3 tanks have more). There's no reason to buff tanks so you get 3 of them in a game (or 4 with Galio mid or s4/5 malphite mid), just like people freak out when adcs popped up in every role. Everything in moderation - in every meta i want a tank on my team and at minimum one beefy front line champion. I think most others do too. We hate tank metas not because that choice is more popular, but because the second, third, and sometimes fourth tank picks on the team are just too much.

I don't consider tank players as unskilled. I consider tank champions as having too much damage. No tank should be able to cc chain you for 5-6 seconds, have 5k health with 300 armor, and still do 1000's of damage during a fight. They do too many things well, and not enough poorly. I don't consider Sion in that category though. He is really tanky, has a lot of cc, but his damage isn't overbearing, just enough to supplement his team. He is a balanced tank imo. Garen/Darius/maokai/nautalus etc all do too much damage. At least darius is kite-able.

Garen and Darius aren't tanks, as for Nautilus, he did do too much damage for a long time, but right now at this moment he doesn't do nearly enough. He's fallen down in winrate and popularity meteorically. Maokai's damage has also been reigned in. It takes him way longer to kill people than it ever used to. He has tools that allow him to stay on people and do that damage, but at the rate he does it, it will take him way too long to actually kill somebody before they manage to put a wall between him and them, or the frontline saves them

Not to mention most tanks either have reliable crowd control, or unreliable. And usually the best way to play a tank with unreliable crowd control, is to have some cheesy strategy in mind. Which also isn't very fun to play against; problem is though riot isn't leaving a whole lot of options left, with all the excessive safety for squishies. However I'd disagree that there's a low skill ceiling for tanks, as it depends on the player's ingenuity and adaptability.

For example I used to main blitzcrank, and everyone thinks I'll engage with him and I often did, but occasionally I'd peel for my allies in unexpected ways and cause us to win a teamfight we shouldn't have. In a specific game me & my marksman were roaming through the enemy jungle to cut off an enemy mage, and were ganked by their jungle assassin; I'd seen him use all his gapclosers to reach my ally, so I flashed a nearby wall and grabbed him, denying his surprise attack from finishing my teammate. We shut him down (as he'd gotten a spree from camping top lane), and then took down their mage soon after before their bottom pair caught up to us. Quite the tense spectacle, and I didn't survive the entire ordeal, but I prevented them from getting a double kill and gave us a triple in the same move.
