@Riot - MR itemization counterplay and early game, whoops?!

So what counter-play itemization options are there early game against mages? The only way to start with a magic resist item now is to spec extra gold in utility so you have enough to buy a null magic mantle, but whoops not enough to get a health pot (thus being a non-option for most champions). So the only option left is to buy a ton of health regen items and get bullied out of lane, or invest heavily into your MR runes (which doesn't work in blind pick game mode scenarios) and thus stagnate build options.

You don't need a MR item that early. Get flat MR runes and buying a Ruby Crystal is more efficient for surviving magic damage.

Or get MR runes and Crystalline Flask + pots - usually, magic damage dealers can't burst you even 60-0 pre-6.

This only works in scenarios where you know what the enemy champ is during selection. If you are in blind pick, then you don't have these options as stacking MR and then facing an AD based champion is a really bad idea.

Well, the thing is: This game isn't balanced around neither blind pick nor ARAM. It is balanced around competitive draft pick, and mostly high elo competitive draft pick, too.

So, if you're running blind pick, prepare yourself for the unknown.

This game started as blind pick. I was there when it did, so it should have that balance in mind. Even that notwithstanding, removing the level 1 option is poor game design and really limits player options.

don't most people who only have 2 rune pages just take armor or health seals with magic resist glyphs? other than flask and pots, i don't see much that can be done to "counter" mages early
