How do I fight an adc like ashe/cait/vayne as a bruiser/tank during the late game

Daxanater··17 votes·1,871 views

I feel so useless when i'm so tanky and stacked on resist but still get melted by the enemy adc, but this isn't a qq thread. As a gold 3 pleb I still don't understand the game a whole lot so how?

You don't. You engage with your team and focus on keeping them from hitting your carries.

Daxanater1 votes

how about we say our carries arent doing so well but the jg and top laners are the ones fed that are the bruisers/tanks, and when I talk about them not doing so well I really mean it, it'd take a long time for them to get back up

l Helios l1 votes

So under the assumption your carries < their carries: that probably means your team fight is weaker than theirs (I'm not considering specific picks because it gets too game-specific). In this situation, you're best options are to:

  • Set up a freeze in bot/top lane for the behind carry so they can farm up. Obviously, this means you sacrifice pressure on objectives, but that's a decision call that would need to be made.

  • Set up a 1-3-1 push to keep their team split as best as possible. You're best off giving the 1's to good survivalists or people who can get away.

  • Try a miracle fight where you (the tank/bruiser) do your best to defend your carry or zone out their carry and pray your carry gets some kills. Best to try and do around objectives or when you outnumber their team.

  • Find picks. Always a good way to get gold for your carries. Requires good ward control.

You don't really. They're your natural hardest counter. Frozen Heart/Randuin's can help.

Baby Ghoul6 votes

Don't try to 1v1 a DPS marksman late game. You will usually lose because they are designed to be a tank's counter, especially if they have reliable true damage like Vayne.

I know game situations vary, but generally you want to come at them with another teammate, preferably a full build burst mage or another marksman. You will lock them down, and they will delete them.

Teamwork isn't always something that happens, so if you're finding yourself the target then Randuin's Omen can help. If the ADC is deleting your teammates then you, Frozen Heart is the better option.

I think a good tank for AD heavy teams is someone like Rammus.

codemned into a wall, vayne autos you 3 times, now youre dead instead of her.

her reliable disengage on top of her mobility is what pisses me off the most about vayne tbh. it basically guarantees her winning a fight against most melee champions in the game, unless they have multiple hard gap closers.

should assassins be able to actually 1 shot adc with direct target abilities by lategame because theyre adc killer? vaynes kit is as unfair to fighters and tanks as leblanc is to adc and mages.

Dude, vayne is meant to kill tanks, and assassins are meant to kill squishies, it's like rock-paper-scissors.

Nothing wrong with that.

there is everything wrong with it.

its one thing if a champion has an advantage. but you shouldnt be able to auto win matchups. because then you didnt get outplayed, you just got outpicked and lost in champ select.

GULAG 4 U5 votes

Vayne doesn't auto win, the second you touch her with cc (tanks have plenty of that) she's done. champion select only gives advantages and not auto wins, a bronze vayne ain't wrecking a platinum volibear or garen.

HateDaddy7 votes

As much as I hate vayne as a melee player, I also understand how prone she is to exploding due to her average range. For what she gains as an anti tank/anti melee champion, she loses in basically every way vs anything that out ranges her.

If Thornmail was buffed Ad champs like Ashe, cait, vayne, Quinn, and graves would be countered to some extent.

THornmail right now does 25% bonus armor + 15% of the incoming damage. Riot should make this item a viable option for a team that wants to punish a all ad team. IMO Thornmail should be 2000g, 80 armor, reflects 30% of Physical damage back at the opponent as magic damage, for 4 sec the grievous wounds debuff is applied to the attacker.

lmao and range isn't a stat?

CerealBoxOfDoom4 votes

range is a stat, but it doesn't contradict anything

melee gets better armor, bonus MR, movespeed, etcetc

Their ball of stats is bigger than that of ranged champs but range champs are compensated.

MunchCrunchLunch4 votes

I don't see people playing melee champions at bot lane as carries. because obviously the distribution of power is equal here. a lot of people refuse to face the truth but riot has put too much power into that champion class unlike any game i've seen.

CerealBoxOfDoom3 votes

I disagree on the part about the "too much power" part

But I'm going to skip some logical steps and just tell you about something relevant. In every relatively complex game no matter what it has been found that it is not possible to fully balance ranged vs nonranged.

Some rules that derive from this problem of game design found in many games

  1. ranged or melee will always be stronger in most realistic scenarios
  2. the one that is not the strongest will need extra stats, bells, and whistles to function if the game is to feel balanced
  3. in order for the game to feel fun and maybe to balance it (not going to speculate on necessity) there needs to be a specific condition that takes some work/strategy to reach in which melee can subdue ranged and take the advantage.

There's some more but this gets the point across I think

In league 75-99% of random scenarios ranged is to start out with advantage and melee must actively find a way to acquire that 1-25% scenario and take the advantage. In some games like archeage (last I checked) its melee that gets this but ranged is pretty much immune to being touched or hit more than once every so many seconds (but lifesteal isn't a thing there so damage actually sticks)

An example of this Caitlyn vs Yasuo

both are designed to be adcs, yas a melee adc

cait does annoying stuff to keep you away and is constantly poking you down. Yas is not but he does annoying stuff to compensate for his lack of range until he finally gets a chance to get in range in which case he just poops on you unless you find some clever way to escape which you probably wont in some cases. This is the reason champs like yas get 2 passives, 2 forms of damage evasion, literal evasion, mobility and one of the highest base movespeeds in the game.

yeah i must have missed all those full crit rengar yasuo bot lane ad carries in pro play and my ranked games. obviously rengar was doing his job since i never saw him

CerealBoxOfDoom2 votes

I think both were nerfed out now that I think about it though

Bârd1 votes

Rengar and Yasuo have both received nerfs, but never because of any prowess in bot lane.

Rengar got nerfed with his rework because his Q let him push too quickly (first blood = 1.5 towers), and his E gave him too much harass. Nerfs since then have been because of his excessive burst without much counterplay.

Yasuo got nerfed because he was broken as hell on release (double his current shield duration, nearly double his E damage, higher base stats, higher ranges, faster flow gain, etc.). Nothing really special about that though.

CerealBoxOfDoom1 votes

also at master level play its been shown that both yasuo and rengar can conditionally go botlane as the carry and win games. Riot has spent a long time making melee adcs viable but they tend to go midlane or jungle rather than top or bot

ProfDrDeath1 votes

You don't see people playing melee champions as carries in bot for a simple reason: Melee champions suffer harshly from sharing experience, due to the way base stats scale.

Well they are ad carries, lategame "kill everything" role. It's their job, and just because you "1v5 ulted into enemy backline" while getting pounded by 5 people and then you die in 1 second is not normal? Tanky or not, nobody should survive 1v5 into the enemy team unless it's a drain tank Mordekaiser Aatrox Vladimir and the enemy team failed to cc their asses.

MunchCrunchLunch3 votes

you just hope riot overhauls the meta by shifting some of adc's power into other roles and reworking the whole ranged/melee bs. otherwise you don't. you play a disruptor. and hope you cause enough chaos for the enemy adc to die in the midle of it.

Rain NT3 votes

Never, ADC were designed to kill everyone late game if you go up to them unless youre an assassin because assassins were DESIGNED to kill ADCs/APCs. The Bruisers were design to be strong early-mid game because they can be tanky while having good damage. Tanks outscale bruisers because late game it doesnt even matter if you do damage because the ADC/APC will kill you eventually anyway, and its almost always better to just peel. And Tanks are not only tankier than bruisers but also peel better than Bruisers.

The whole reason bruiser is a class is because you need to stomp on them so hard as a bruiser that they never get to the point where they can kill you, by either fighting when you are stronger, force them to mistakes and make bad rotation by splitpushing, or catching them off guard. If you cant do that, then wait til late game and pray your adc is better than theirs so you can just peel everything off them and if the ADC are out of positiong you can punish them and hope for you team to understand to jump on them.

Now to be fair, there are some champions who break these rules, like Fizz, Ekko, Wukong, Irelia. And thats because they can act like an Assassin that can gap close well, but even those champion without a team behind you, you will die if you go in if the ADC you are jumping on has good peel.

Early game - Bruisers/Fighters and some mages/ADC (those adcs usually scale down later down into late game compare to other adcs) Mid Game - Mages and Bruisers Late Game - ADC/Tanks

Play as Nasus. Nail them with Wither to stop them from melting you. Drop Spirit Fire on them to melt their resists. Clobber them with Siphoning Strike. If they survive that, auto once or twice, and hit them with Siphoning Strike again. Spam the laugh emote (Or dance, if using the Infernal skin) for 2.5 seconds.

Kuzja12 votes

I know item 3075 isn't that appealing but it's the best you could build to have those ADC's backfire their attacks. You need plenty of health and armor to counter them and it's going to take good team work to take them down, especially in team fights.

Selegun1 votes

Careful, it seems anytime that item is mentioned it gets a response like you just told someone they picked the wrong religion.

item 3110 and item 3143 are helpful too since they slow down how fast you take damage from those characters.

Oh those guys just don't know how to use it. It's useful with Malphite since his attacks deal damage based on armor, and it's especially useful with Rammus , as if that spiky shell wasn't enough

Selegun1 votes

So I've heard though I havent had the pleasure of playing them in a long time. I build it on Mordekaiser since it helps me last much longer in fights. Seriously, your shield is amazing at reducing damage if you properly rock your E into W with very high cdr. I've also taken a likeing to Stormraider keystone since I seem to reliably proc it off of thornmail when I need the extra speed for a kill.

DemainaNyx1 votes

You have to get on them and cc/burst them, just like every other counter.

This game sorta has a rock paper scissors thing going on.
ADC is designed to kill pretty much anything in 10-20 autos (5-10 seconds let's say) late game cause they are the DPS source. To counter that, you have the burst sources like mages, AD/AP assassins, and bruisers/fighters who can kill people with either little to no resistances or small health pools in 0.5-2 seconds. To counter that (soft counter really), you have the tanks who are low damage but have high health/resistances with generally some form of CC and the supports who have some form of CC or some form of heal/shield all of which last maybe 1-3 seconds.

Obviously the ADC will win if given free reign to auto whoever they want without consequence, that's why there are so many people who can 1-shot them. If your team isn't prioritizing the ADC and whoever is fed, they are going to lose. Honestly, an ADC can go 0/10 but as long as they get the items they need and get peel, they will always be a threat.

As a tank, your job is to watch your team and try to get them to follow you when you engage and peel if your carries are being focused. If that means you don't lock down the ADC, that's fine. It's better to lock down the ulting Master Yi gunning for your ADC and remove him than get the enemy ADC and watch Yi clean up the fight afterwards.

As a fighter though, it depends on who you play. Irelia, for example, has a great gap closer and is meant to dive the backline and destroy a squishy. So, for characters like her, you want to be looking for an opportunity where you can do that, preferably where the enemy team is busy focusing your tank so you can dive in and disrupt the backline without eating all the CC.

Then again, I play ADC a lot so this is mostly what I see and expect. You can decide how you want to play though.

Bârd1 votes

For the most part, you don't.

If you try to 1v1 a lategame ADC as a tank, you are going to lose.

It's not your job to duel the carries. It's your job to force the enemy carry to focus you over your squishy allies, and to buy time for them to wreck shit.

Aptest1 votes

not exactly.

your job as a tank is to force the other team into a position where nailing one of the enemy carries with a primary CC (reliable), followed by a secondary CC (less reliable, often requires setup, but strong) and a ton of burst from your team's carries is possible. In many cases you also have the primary CC.

you use your having either good primary CC or good damage as a threat to herd the other team into position. your defensive stats are there to keep you alive through the harass and punish attempts that you suffer through while posturing.

As a full tank, often landing your full combo once in a fight is enough to dictate the results. full tanks don't run carries down or do too much mayhem to the back-lines. They either catch pray, or peel. having defensive stats is just to buy you the time you need to make that all important pick.

LordOfTheLeague1 votes

You have 2 ways, or you think that stacking nothing but defense is actually useful because you imagine you can kill them without damage or you actually find 1 to 3 damage items / hybrid damage+defense items to put in your build to help your team to burst down the carries as you should.

Dengeden1 votes

If you land CC, otherwise, you'd better splitpush.

TheSingularity1 votes

Depends on the tank and the adc. An anti ad tank will have a pay day against most adcs apart from ashe untill she gets toned down and a fed jhin with that armour pen build.

Them felas include sejuani, rammus and malphite. What's special about them? Sej: gains armour from passive, W provides very nice dps as she beefs up and she has awesome engage cc/sticking power. Ram: taunt, built in thornmail, encourages armour stacking and rocks in a 1v1 situation. As long as you don't get blocked they're as good as gone. Mal: atk speed slow, move speed steroid/slow and an almost undodgeable engage.

All 3 can get to an adc and stay on em with consistent damage. Only issue with all 3 is getting peeled. You may see vayne as a big time issue, however with a randuins, frozen heart and thornmail. You'll drop her dps down to zero as long as you engage wisely with these champions (that is don't dive head first into her peel. Isolate her and keep her busy) Amumu could be an honorable mention tbh but lacks follow up without a rylais for e/w.

The flaw with the above plan is that you'd have a build purely for beating the adc. Leaving you vulnerable to dot mages. This being randuins, dead mans, frozen heart, cinderhulk/sunfire, thornmail and boots/warmogs. (I personally sell boots and rely on dead mans and my cc to keep up). Yes armour won't stop vaynes w, but that's not the purpose. It's there to stop 2/3 aa and increase thornmail dmg.

Just about every other tank will get kited to oblivion and lack an anti ad kit. Notably zac, naut and maokai. They have a strong initial engage but lack sustained cc/dmg compared to the above 4 tanks.

As far as bruisers go, any with hard engage can fare well. However the meta doesn't favor many of them. Jax, irelia and hec could be fair picks but all rely on the Tforce power spike (which fluctuates in viability violently) and Irelias passive is about to be crushed.

Any juggernaut has no chance unless they get some sneaky flash engage and pop em before they can start kiting.

There's not much a bruiser can do against an adc like that. If you're Darius, then you can flash-pull-90% slow to ensure her demise, but as most other tanks, you can't really do anything. Usually your mage, or adc will be able to carry fights, but if they aren't good then you're probably screwed.

RdePZ6L3ru1 votes

item 3143 . Passive helps a ton, and the active helps you stick to them. Personally, I play a ton of Vi, so the carries are never really that big of a problem, but definitely recommend picking up champs with targetable CC such as Maokai and Renekton if you're having difficulties.
