I don't have a problem with blinds and silences being in the game

They just last TOO FREAKING LONG.

Some champions have silence done well. Soraka has a nice silence which feels good for both players. Blitz has a nice short silence I've never complained about, and if it causes someone to die because of it then I applaud that use of silence.

And then you have this guy. Malzahar At max rank, a 3 second silence. That's ridiculous. Lasts as long as a Morgana snare, yet can affect an entire team and is honestly easier to land (imo).

Or you can look at Chogath with a 2.5 second silence. Although Cho has plenty of weaknesses, getting hit by that silence is not fun at all.

Let's go look at blinds.

Quinn has a 1.5 second blind. At 2.5 attack speed, that means she can block 3 autoattacks. At max. Most of the time she'll block 2 autoattacks.

And then there's Satan. 2.5 second blind at max rank means that against 2.5 attack speed he'll block 6 autoattacks. That's a little ridiculous, no?

Tl;dr Don't make silences and blinds last longer than 1.5 seconds, it's not fun to deal with.

I kind of agree, Malz and Cho silences do last a long time, you just have to learn to play around them! Going into a game, level 1, you can definitely see you're vs. Cho or Malz, so figure out how to counter it. Dodge Cho's silence and then go ham. Wait until Malz's silence is on CD, then go ham.

The problem is, you can't really take something away without giving them something else. Those are part of they're core strengths, hence why they are annoying to deal with in the first place unless they weren't meaningful. Maybe, Riot could add a slow effect to those abilities and make it so the other utility effect lasted for the first half of the duration. But that's just a quick idea I came up with.

why do people cite soraka's silence as an example of a fair one when it's instant and can be used preemptively

not that cho's silence is fair either but still

I think imposing a limit of 1.5 seconds is silly but I do agree that the only reason there is really any reason to complain about stuff like silence/blind is the inappropriate durations they've been given in the past. For something as easy to apply as Teemo's blind and Cho'Gath's silence, the durations are ridiculous. Malz could probably do with having a shorter silence too, though a delayed skillshot silence going below 2 seconds at max rank seems lacking.

Silences/blinds are unfortunately so much more unhealthy right now than they really need to be because they've not been commonly used in modern releases and therefore are stuck with the rather hilarious design quality of yesteryear ("this champion has a targeted CC that lasts for 3 seconds because... yeah") but I think the mechanic is not inherently problematic. Soraka's silence is indeed a fantastic example of it working out - powerful, but doesn't feel terrible.
