Frozen Mallet is probably one of the most unhealthy items in this game.

LegacyDAP··92 votes·7,647 views

The item isn't like stupid broken, but it's ONLY good on ranged bruiser tops. Like it's not even good on anyone other than Kennen, Teemo, Gnar and when they're building it it's an absolutely stupid spike 2nd buy for all of them. Why is this item in the game still and can it be removed next season?

Don't worry they are adding the frozen mallet effect to new runes with a 4 sec cd

LegacyDAP23 votes

At least it has a CD. What I don't like is the most consistent form of dps in the game having cc attached to it that's consistently applied.

You would hate ashe

Ashe pops like a zit. Frozen Mallet gives a large chunk of hp, decent damage, and utility

kasfas1 votes

I do actually really hatr Ashe for that reason. The slow is rediculously potent at later levels meaning if she gets ahead you can almost never get on top of her.

item 3116 is just as bad. its always more effective on ranged ap champions with damage over time effects, than it helps melee ap champions to stick to their targets.

Annie Malzahar Zyra Azir etc. are just stupid when the item is strong.

for certain other ap champions like Karthus its existence is way too much of a crutch and an excuse why their kit cant be better on their own.

item 3030 is a perfectly healthy ap utility item and an example how you can add additional slows onto mage kits. item 3116 is a disaster.

Yasuo loves building it too. As if he needed MORE ways to be inescapable lol.

DuskDaUmbreon4 votes

I don't think he's built it for a few months now...

Infernape14 votes

According to Lolalytics and op.gg, PD, IE and FM is his 2nd or 3rd most popular build order.

RainXBlade1 votes

Can confirm. I usually skip my life steal item to buy FM first. The slow and HP from it is more valuable than the lifesteal of a BT or RK.

MontethePython9 votes

Fm is still core on Yasuo actually, check the op.gg's for players like Moe(Yassuo), Tempest, High boob yasuo, ArKaDaTa, or any other high elo yasuo players. The Build for Yasuo is still PD -> IE -> BT -> FM, then Ga or qss. It gives decent survivablity to compensate for Yasuo's very low base health numbers and utility + dmg. Plus it can apply on q to the first target hit.

HalcyonDweller14 votes

I don't think it needs to be removed, but maybe it could have it's power condensed into an active?

Like, on activation your next auto attack (or next 3 auto attacks, or auto attacks for X amount of time) slow the target.

RainbowIcee6 votes

if this happened then it's stats would need to be honestly buffed. The use of the item is to force a duel, the slow is too weak on melee champs as it wears off by the time a mobile champ jumps out. So maybe buff the slow on melee champs and nerf it on ranged ?

HalcyonDweller3 votes

Perhaps it could ground the target, might better define the item's niche.

RainbowIcee2 votes

That would make it too strong though? Even if slowed mobile targets can get away jumping over walls and or reaching team mates, being grounded is just R.I.P to a jumper for example.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Maybe, but mobility has been too strong for a while now. It would be nice to have more recourse against it.

RainbowIcee1 votes

While mobility has been really strong it's too much to cripple them like this. Imagine a champ like Khazix if he was stopped from jumping because someone hit him... that'd make him way too vulnerable.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

There are a number of ways to deal with that. It could grant them some sort of protection if they are really squishy, it could be tweaked to not affect resets, or only work for a short duration, etc. If it's a short duration, Kha'Zix could still just use his stealth to disengage long enough for the effect to wear off.

Or maybe it's fine and those sorts of characters shouldn't be trying to fight the types of characters who would buy this item in the first place.

Most of the champions you listed do not use Frozen Mallet anyways, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make...

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

I think I derpily replied to the wrong person. Someone else on this thread was talking about Rylais having a similar effect.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Ah I understand, it happens to everyone.

Teridax682 votes

This is good reasoning, I feel. The main reason why Frozen Mallet is so toxic right now is because its slow has no real downtime, so it never feels exceptionally strong at any given moment, but the power it outputs is humongous over time. It also means that whenever faced against a ranged, kite-heavy autoattacker, there is no exploitable moment where their kiting power drops and gives their opponent a chance to go in, which is in large part why both the item and those champions can be so frustrating. Condensing the item's power into an active with a cooldown would allow champions to access a strong window of sticking/kiting power if they need it, but would give their targets a fairer chance to close the distance otherwise.

CyberBalt13 votes

I just don't understand why Rylais, an item that needs actual spells, has a worse slow than Mallet -- even with the (small) ranged penalty.

PrinceOfStorms9 votes

Riot decided that it was unhealthy when pretty much every AP champion in the game built it because its stats weren't dogshit and it actually applied a slow that's non-insignificant.

YumaS2Astral3 votes

I still don't get why they didn't just reduced the AP by about half then significantly increased the health, without touching the slow effectiveness. It would make Rylai better for its intended users (AP bruisers) while making it unnatractive for AP burst mages, which were the ones abusing this item.

Myozthirirn16 votes

Mallet stats are shit for its users and for its price.

nice table8 votes

this is actually untrue though, mallet used to have shit stats but now its actually more cost efficient than almost every tank item

Sexy Jack Rabbit2 votes

They had bigger range as well though.

FM as unhealthy as it is, only applies on AA, and has a worse slow for ranged to compensate.

Whereas you had Syndra applying a 40% Slow from 800 Units away with the old Rylai's.

LankPants11 votes

It doesn't need to be removed, it needs to be melee only and buffed to a point where it's at least decent on its intended users like Shyvana.

ModDaenrysTargaryen9 votes

i do build item 3022 on Shyvana

THE RlVER KlNG8 votes

ugh riot already removed urgot's ability to use sterak's, please don't take away another core item [sg-zephyr]

Sahn Uzal2 votes

Eh. Assuming Riot agrees the item is Unhealthy for League, and were to remove it, they could just give Urgot some specific buffs. Like making his Shotgun knees slow or increasing the Q slow duration.

On one hand it kinda sucks, but on the other hand, if I were an Urgot player, I'd rather not have my champion rely on an unhealthy gimmick. I'd rather be able to function without it.

Just my 10 cents on the matter.

Nanuk Pihoqahiak4 votes

It'd be kind of hard to add a slow to his knees specifically, as this would be a straight up buff. He doesn't get Frozen Mallet as a first item generally, so he just got a lot of extra power for free, especially when a slow from his legs can help him rotate around the enemy better.

I'd argue Urgot is a healthy case of a ranged utilizing Frozen Mallet. He has an extremely short range by ranged standards, and uses it for the purpose of specifically sticking to use his passive. You can still fight and interact with him. If Gnar gets it and you're melee? You can't fight him. You'll gap close only for him to E away, and then continue weaving in and out of range, while nuking you every three hits for percent health damage.

you don't know annoying till an Ashe builds frozen mallet. lol

Meep Man50 votes

That's actually useless, as slows don't stack in value and Ashe's slow is just as if not more powerful than the Frozen Mallet slow. Only the greatest slow in value is applied at any time.

if frozen mallet gets removed gnar would actually just be dogshit. a majority of his damage comes from being able to slow people so that you can get your w procs in and deal stupid damage. if frozen mallet gets removed gnar wont be able to get his black cleaver probs off or even w off and will just be escaped and will only rely on teamfights.

Big Black Croc8 votes

Gnar SHOULD become dogshit, theres no reason a champ that has safety, range, tankiness, poke, mobility, crowd control, burst, be allowed to be viable, especially when the item makes him more cancerous.

Frost1c38 votes

This is just simply not true. until a gnar builds resists he is massively susceptible to things like bork, liandries and all the other health based dmgs, Gnar is actually well balanced for most levels (bronze-pro), he is a lane bully by nature (like renek) but once you know HOW to play around him its really not the end of the world, that said the FM is a bit niche for an item, I think just a slight change to the passive (maybe make it an active slow field or some such) and its fine. FM is pretty well balanced on all except ranged champs (especially gnar) and even then it is VERY niche

redniwediS8 votes

Honestly I'd rather give Gnar a little time in the trash can than deal with ranged champs top that both have MS boosts and slows. Gnar has those built in and then buys more on top of it.

I don't think he should get gutted, no champ deserves that, but a little time at a lower level of strength could do him some good.

kargish4 votes

Yasuo

Vectros3 votes

I think it needs to be melee only. There are certain champs who could make some use of it if it were a tad stronger, but they can't buff it because of ranged champ abuse.

Sexy Jack Rabbit4 votes

The last nerf to the item was because of Yasuo.

Painted Celt2 votes

Here's an idea that might work to fix it: item 3022 +700 Health +30 Attack Damage Removed +30% Base AD Passive removed Unique Active (Melee-Only) - Avalanche: Strike the ground, creating an avalanche in the target direction that snares enemy units for 0.5 seconds. For the next 6 seconds, basic attacks slow the target's Movement Speed by 50% for 1.5 seconds. Cooldown: 60 seconds

That active could be quite strong, as a gap-closer + sticking tool for melee champions. Teemo + Kennen + KogMaw could no longer benefit from it as a kiting tool. Gnar would still be able to use it fairly well, but he could only use the active while in Mega Gnar form, so he couldn't use it to help kite while in ranged form. If a champion like Gnar, Kayle, Jayce switches to ranged form, they would lose the on-hit slow application because it would be coded as a melee-only passive buff. Also, if Yasuo or MasterYi start to build it, they can simply have their Base AD nerfed and can have their bonus AD scalings buffed to compensate if needed.
