Sometimes you need to match the flow of the game. If you want to have a lot of split push potential, take Lich bane and teleport. If you want to counter a fed Zed Talon or Yas, take hourglass. If you're fighting Annie or Syndra take Mercs. Sometimes you need BVeil as well. The build path matters too. A haunting guise can be nice to sit on while you finish other items, and less LBs now fully complete hextech gunblade before finishing MPen options.
