Riot what is rank supposed to measure?

I guess when I think of rank I think of a players ability to play at a consistent skill level over a period of time. Obviously, with seasons being so long part of reaching your actual rank takes time and grinding. So why is it that this system forces a majority of players to prove, grind, and find their actual rank while giving other players free handouts?

I have already bitched enough about new accounts and high starting mmr. Pretty much just ruins the concept of ranked for new players so I will just skip over that part.

But whats up with placements and accounts that have been previously ranked? It is widely known that playing placement matches generally bring your rank down, especially at the start of a new season. It is also know you can't generally only play 10 games and be your "true" rank. So how come this ranked system forces some players to play hundreds of games to achieve a rank while others have the option to only play 10? Lots of players complain about the ranked system for various reasons. I like it overall, but I do think one major problem with the current system is how ranked is defined.

Right now the current system has conflicting definitions.

  1. Rank being your true skill level.
  2. Perseverance to achieve actual rank over time .

So which one is it? I am fine with the definition in this system being both, but right now you have some players where rank = close to true rank, and others = rank + # of games played trying to prove it. Shouldn't rank be defined the same for everyone and not solely based on when and how you do in your stupid 10 placement games?

For example if your true rank is plat or higher you can't even get your true rank off of placements. You have to play games to climb from gold, since gold is highest you can be placed after placements (for new accounts). Now for prior season ranked accounts I am pretty sure your rank still drops in diamond or plat even if you do your placements late and do well in them. So why does this change for low elo and why does it change player to player?

There is not doubt that if you start playing the season from the start you will drop in rank. That is fine, you have roughly a year to climb. Some players will climb, others don't care enough and sit at a rank lower than their actual skill since they don't play the hundreds of games like their supposed to. But then other players will just wait all year, do their placements and get placed in their prior season rank even with terrible placement games and not forced to climb at all? Like how does this make sense? Do you not see how this is conflicting? If ranks are supposed to be assigned closely based on your placements then you should be able to be placed up through master after placements........ And if your supposed to have to play games to achieve your true rank then everyone should have to do that, not just players who start playing at the beginning of the season.

Where is this coming from? Most recent example is an acquaintance. Season 5 rank = gold 5. Hardly plays most of the season, plays placements this week and goes 4-6 and gets gold 5....... Now I do believe he is probably a gold level player but don't you see the irony? He didn't have to prove anything this season while a majority of players actually had to prove their ranks. It just completely messes up the meaning of ranks in this system. I do believe he is good enough to reach gold, so if you say "well it gave him close to his actual rank" I get that. But the system doesn't do that for most players and that's where the problem lies. There are plenty of players lower rank than their actual skill level who won't achieve their actual rank because they won't put in the time. Hell this player probably isn't his actual rank either. But since he was only gold 5 last season and only won 40% of his placements its hard to argue his actual rank is higher than gold 5, yet the system gave it to him for free. I know for a fact if he got placed silver 1 or 2 he would not have played any games to reach gold 5 or higher.

So to summarize. As a veteran player who is not very good at this game, I find it frustrating that rank meaning changes drastically from player to player. It is widely known your not supposed to reach your actual rank in League of legends by just playing few ranked games. But at the same time, many players can benefit and not be forced to play many games while others have to played hundreds to achieve the same rank pretty much solely based on when they play 10 worthless placement games. I find this very conflicting and wish Riot would take a stance on what rank actually means in League of Legends and creates a system that is consistent throughout the year.

Tl,Dr Rank meaning changes based on when you play placements throughout the season and from player to player. Wish Riot would take a stance and define rank in League of Legends and keep the definition consistent throughout a season.

If you want MMR to reflect your true skill level, the larger the sample size you give it, the better the system can place you. That friend who was G5 and saved placements for late in the season and still hit G5? If he's able to do that, he could probably make a decent climb to something more indicative of his actual skill level if he were to play for an entire season. He may or may not reach Plat, but could probably work his way into high Gold if he kept at it.

I'd actually be a similar example, though as somebody who did placements early on in the season. I'm a support main, record is 41-30 for this season. I played pretty much all of that early on in the season and stopped cause I just didn't feel like dealing with the stress of ranked. I'm currently S2. Does it mean I'm actually a S2 player? I tend not to think so. I was gold back in seasons 2 and 3, just haven't cared much to play ranked since. I'm fairly confident that if I actually put the effort in, I'd be able to climb to gold pretty easily, and possibly even hit plat (I pretty regularly play against plat and sometimes diamond players when I play normals with my friends, and I certainly hold my own).

So ranking is supposed to be an indicator of your actual skill level. But it's predicated on the fact that you actually play enough games to level out and find your true MMR.

If I may read into your post a bit, I feel like your bigger issue might be the desync between MMR and ranking on your profile. As it's set up, if your MMR is well above your ranking, even if you go 50/50 in your games (MMR stays roughly the same), you'll be increasing in rank over time. But it's hard to tell because the MMR is completely masked by the ranking that you actually see.

There's a lot of give and take with this system. In Season 1, they went directly off your MMR for rankings. And the rankings were set as specific percentiles of the playerbase, by MMR (it actually still meant something good to be bronze in season 1). It caused a lot of what they dubbed 'ranked anxiety', especially if you were teetering between two rankings. Lose one game, drop back to silver from gold. Win the next, maybe you jump back to gold. But because they used actual percentiles as the cutoffs for ranks, rather than just an MMR number, it meant that you might just reach gold one day, then log in the next and suddenly be silver again because the mark for gold moved while you were asleep.

By making MMR only an indirect influence on ranking, it made ranked feel a lot more accessible.

just remember the actual point of the game is to have fun and enjoy it.

here is a though about rank...

rank isnt something to be ashamed of. i feel rank is just a way for riot to put players of similar skill levels vs each other so they can have fair games and enjoy and have fun playing the game... hear me out...

you are bronze.. what if every game you matched vs plats and diamonds? and you get stomped up and down the map and the game is no fun to you.. are you likely to keep playing if that is what happens every time?

on the other hand if your plat/diamond whatever "high" elo if you playing vs people lower skill level then you is that fun not every being challenged? it would be like if you were to go play a game co op vs bots or a custom game vs bots and the difficult is set on easy?

how fun is that?

so in theory rank is there to put us vs people we have a chance to win against while being challenged so the game is fun and rewarding at the same time and keeps you playing..

I get it but this is what I find frustrating. It doesn't really affect me personally but it does a handful of players. I know my rank, my average skill level, and how the system works. I know I will play all season and know my rank will drop from soft reset. I just think its weird most players don't understand it until a couple seasons down the road and makes comparing ranks hard since time is such a large factor.

Basically, Take the same player, same mmr, two different accounts, both gold 5 in season 5.

If this player played their placement games right away and went 5-5 he/she would be placed in silver 5. If they did not play anymore games for the rest of the season their account would be ranked silver 5.

Now they have not gotten any better or worse, only they wait until the final week of season and do placements on their 2nd account. Account was gold 5 season 5, then once again go 5-5 in placements and get placed gold 5.

This is what I am talking about and what I find frustrating.

You should not really pay close attention to rank by what people get placed or whatever. You should only look at a person's rank based on what their peak was. If that person peaked at challenger, well then they are a challenger level player until they don't reach that peak again the next season. If your peak was gold 5, then you are a gold 5 player until you get higher, or go lower the next season. Just looking at whatever people were placed at or "proving" something doesn't really matter. Ranked is what you play when you want to have fun playing in a more competitive environment than a normal game. If you think too hard about it, then you lose the meaning behind why you play this game. And of course that meaning is to have fun.

its just weird when compared to other games. Like I get it and have understood it for awhile but anyone who just picks up league is going to be confused fairly easily.

LIke being plat 1 the first month of a season is completely different than being plat 1 now. Same for all/most ranks. Its a strange concept. I think its cool but also annoying in a way.

Rank means how lucky you was in the queue lottery, some win, some don't, also it reflects how much boosted you are.
