Why the fuck is Ezreal in the jungle, and somehow managing to be good at it?

Well they overbuffed crit and protective support items to hell so he can't compete as an adc so they gave Ezreal a few direct buffs but he's still not a hyper carry so he emerged in the jungle as his most competitive role thanks to skt peanut doing it maybe(?). Even Lulu has jungled in the LCK in a juggermaw comp. I mean it's 2017 so I'm not surprised not even the jungle is safe from ranged superiority. I personally play Teemo jungle and it's pretty good but he has great dot dmg and a blind. Ez can blink and ramp up his passive and spam Q.

Moral of the story is if you're not a ranged character or full tank damage sponge [or Lee Sin] Riot doesn't really like you because they think those other champs are toxic low skill expression champs that can't be allowed to be competitive because too many silver players. So between balancing around winrates half the time and who makes the coolest esport spectacles the other half the status quo never really changes. Been like this since at least season 4. At least assassins weren't meme'd yet back then.

Well they overbuffed crit and

blah blah blah. What I hear is that the riot balance team still hasn't figured it out after 7 seasons.

We did had a tank meta, it was healthy too before the community bitched about how boring it was to play a 25+ minute game.

ModAcademy Kayn16 votes

Yes, because that was totally the only problem it had.

Jet Sett7 votes

Wasn't the problem the fact that tanks and bruisers abused Cinderhulk by getting absurd amounts of damage from abilities that had health scaling all while being really tanky?

These guys probably don't remember the "tank meta" of season 5/some of 6 lmao.

They're acting like it was "slow drawn out fights". Not: Mundo running through 3 towers and diving you/killing you just as fast because of how much damage his E gave.

Or not: If the enemy team got an early kill you literally couldn't look at your tower because Towers didn't effect Volibear/Udyr/Poppy after 1 item.

Or not: every single champion was built better as tank because tank items were so busted.

Yeah, it wasn't inherently a problem in Ekko's kit either - it was just that he did it the best.

Tank Katarina, Tank Fizz, Tank Zed, Tank Talon, Tank Jhin, Tank Yi, Full Tank Wukong and some others I can't remember did absurd amounts of damage while building pretty much full tank.

Even right now, what makes the games so snowbally is BECAUSE tanks get so unkillable + ADCs scale faster.

Pretty much: its a 2 pronged attack. They "split" the tank meta of before into 2 roles. Before Tanks not only tanked everything, they also killed everything. Now ADCs kill everything (even better than old tanks), and Tanks tank everything (even better than old tanks).

Rose-tinted glasses combined with a bias against ADCs. An "anything is better" attitude that I hate.

I remember tank metas of the past, the problem was 2-fold then, one of which was solved in season 6 with proper ADC items, and that was that tank-killing DPS was lacking, especially earlier on, and the later part was that tank designs in this game have too much of their damage budget in abilities that front-load that damage. So tanks that actually do damage become pseudo-burst assassins as well. Which is really anti-fun and imbalanced. Mages have historically had this same problem, and it's why riot keeps gutting AP itemization, both tanks and mages (because of their current designs) can turn strong AP items into some really abusively anti-fun bullshit. The solution is to fix the champion designs, and then buff the items. But riot doesn't seem to show an awareness of this, or maybe they are aware but aren't communicating it (which is a failure of a different kind in my book).

the games honestly fine. Tanks are still strong people just don't seem to realize it. The problem is that the game is pretty balanced right now but volatile. So that the game is balanced but sense no one seems to know how to play tanks or teamfights or objectives right. It allows certain things that wouldn't be strong to be stronger then they really are.

It's like if we gave adc's 1 hp and there were 4 assasains on every team and people didn't understand killing the adc is really easy and effecient and went to kill everyone and saving the adc for last everytime, you could see how adcs would be really weak but because people play the teamfights wrong all of suddenly everything seems wrong and people complain about X or Y.

Now we have it were tanks are fine, ad's are fine, mages are fine because there in the middle of the map and effect everything so mid lane is always fine. Jungle is fine, Supports are definitely fine. The only thing I wouldn't know anything about is top lane but that seems to be in a decent spot as well.

But the problem is that people play teamfights and lanes like garbage and instead of learning to play better it's easier to assume everything you do it right and it's your teammates and the game and Riot and the balance that's all wrong. Playing better isn't always about being mechanically better it's also knowing what your supposed to be doing, which is what people really lack more then anything. Every lane is fine right now and has viable and good champions. Hell because no one plays the game decently even assasains can be played pretty effectively below plat. But every lane has viable champs and it's balanced. Sure you might not be able to play the champions you want to play and be on an equal footing. But that's every season. Every season has champions in every lane that are better then another. But not every season or meta can if played right be as impactful in the game as they are currently.

Sure you might play good and your team might do bad in a game causing you to lose. But that's one of the downsides to a team game is sometimes your team doesn't play the best.

Maybe in lower MMRs the bit about teamfights is true, but I play at an MMR where people at least generally have a clue how to teamfight, and frankly I've seen some impressively well-played teamfights in my games. Even in this MMR, and when I watch higher level play, the power of ADC (and now enchanter) items and how it's warping the entire meta because glaringly apparent to me. I don't want to take away the good things those classes have gotten, I want the rest of the roster to have similarly good things. Tanks are meta for 2 reason right now: 1. CC trains are necessary to catch and have a chance to kill marksman (more precisely, they are better than anything else at doing so in a teamfight scenario). 2. item 3193 exists in its current state, and is acting as a crutch for to get them enough durability to actually be able to soak damage for some amount of time, the item's active is legit broken OP, especially its interaction with item 3190's active. The current state of itemization in game is the primary reason that the meta is what it is atm, trying to play divers and juggernauts feels awful, and they are really bad as an archetype because they don't have good enough items to compete.

Enraged Piglet1 votes

the problem was that tanks didn't build tanky they build one or two defensive items and then built damage and were tanky as all hell while killing the shit out of everything. A lot of tanks already have decent dmg on there abilities and if they can build like 1 defense item and be considered tanks while having bunch of cc and dmg it's really over the top.

Then you had things like fizz and ekko building tank items so it added mobility and more base dmg in the mix with invulnerability on fizz and health reset on ekko.

KoKoboto3 votes

No no no no no. Tank meta was cancer because ANY champion could go sunfire + iceborn gauntlet and kill any champion. Hell I've seen assassins and mid laners going the combo and somehow working. Fizz, Diana, Ekko, Talon, literally ANYONE. Tank meta was shit for this reason so you gotta take off those rose-coloured glasses.

The actual problem is that games just end sooner because of gold gain and ADC items all being cheaper and towers being shit and everyone exploding (not so much as before but it's still there). Look back to patch 5.22, most of the changes to gold generation and just everything was where the game really fucked up and has stayed fucked up since than.

#make all tanks great again

Can we please make tanks that aren't cc bots?

The hell is a tank that isn't a CC bot?

A tank that dives in and instagibbs the enemy marksman or the mage?

Something like a Yasuo but with little damage and the tank scaling of cho gath?

Skorch1 votes

You mean Juggernauts?

GigglesO1 votes

Yes, and champs that are on the side of juggernauts, but aren't really declared as such like volibear.

Give a reason to not just stack tanky damage items, or even just damage items. I'd love to see a viable build where you build straight tank with no damage, and you just soak for a good 10 seconds without needing a cc or gimmick like shen dodge zone.

Skorch1 votes

Well technically Riot could make a champion that has no CC whatsoever and builds full tank. But what would be the point?

You shouldnt be able to do damage with that so what could you be doing. Being tanky? Thats great and all but if you are JUST a tank with nothing to lock them down and no damage to do what stops them from just ignoring you?

GigglesO2 votes

because of the damage over time, and soak that you have, you didn't see season 2 mundo did you?

Skorch1 votes

No I wasnt around for season 2 but also I still say that while DoT is scary. If they can just walk past you and kill their damage then what? A DoT isnt gonna kill anyone fast enough to be threatening, unless it is just obscene.

GigglesO1 votes

Where do you even get your opinion from? Damage was low/high enough (in the rigth ratio on the right champs) in season 2 on champs like mundo that you could just walk at the enemy adc and force them to orb walk/kite you or die. No it wasn't instantly I got to them they died either, it was actually so low that i remember having full on minute long team fights where you walked in circles trying to get to each other through the cc. CC also lasted longer back then, look at the 4-5 second fears/taunts that we had. There were fights where you could chase a vayne back to nexus well and neither of you could kill each other without her standing still or you standing still...

Now its I got to them and insta-nuked him. The only reason Riot even nerfed tanks that didn't deal damage quickly is because "games lasted too long". Back in season 1 it wasn't uncommon to have a 60 minute game. Not only that, but if you had a roa and boots at the minute 20 mark you were hot and ready to go for the rest of the game.

Skorch1 votes

Compared to that i prefer the game even now.

Sure it sounded like things were more... random back then.

But not only do i prefer short games. I dont like taking 20 seconds of having a tank run at me while i auto. That doesnt sound fun for either champion.

And if you want a full tank with no CC why not play Mundo or Nunu NOW?

GigglesO1 votes

You realize the reason they aren't played is because they aren't tanky enough, and don't have enough damage/cc to be relevant right? That is why they keep buffing damage, and then when a tank rises up they have to nerf them, because they auto win... Also, aram was supposed to be the shorter game mode, where in fact most of my arams last longer than my ranked games....

A full length game in plat/diamond is typically 3 items (if you count boots as an item)

Skorch1 votes

"because they auto win" So are you saying you want them to auto-win?

GigglesO1 votes

If it takes 30 seconds or more to kill an enemy it isn't auto win.

Skorch1 votes

Is my reading comprehension off? Or did you yourself say that? "and then when a tank rises up they have to nerf them, because they auto win"

GigglesO1 votes

You haven't been following our conversation. Currently, since damage is so high they have to nerf one every time they rise up. BECAUSE OF HOW HIGH DAMAGE IS. If they would make them live longer but deal less damage it wouldn't be an issue.

Skorch2 votes

So your issue ISNT that tanks are CC bots. But that Damage dealers are killing other damage dealers too fast. And want to go back to a time where it takes 15 seconds for damage dealers to kill eachother and 30 for tanks and damage dealers to kill eachother? Is that was you mean.

GigglesO1 votes

Somewhat, those numbers are flexible though. I was thinking 5 seconds for damage on damage and 30 for damage on tank/tank on damge. And for tank on tank, you just don't fight because it isn't worth your time.

Skorch1 votes

Thats close to right now, little off but close.

As well as what about damage v tank? The thing you seemed to be most concerned about.

Enraged Piglet1 votes

but then they just kite you like people do with nasus and mundo. Also if all you had to do all game was build tanky and run at the enemy team that doesn't really give you the ability to carry or do anything better or differently then the other tank on the enemy team doing the same thing. You have to give tanks CC or a way to impact the map like shen or pretty good laning capabilities or there's no reason to play them unless there op.

GigglesO1 votes

Except that if you allow them to live long enough while being a damage threat the enemy is forced to cc you or kite you. Right now they just stand there autoing you, and you die before you even hit them once.

man i remember the season 4 (i think it was season 4, maybe it was 5) jungle changes riot implemented to make the jungle more "diverse" and more viable to more junglers and more off meta junglers but instead it just made it so that some junglers were hardly viable at all and nobody could hardly do an off meta jungler.

Leetri3 votes

Kinda funny actually. When Riot had to nerf Soraka/Lulu/[insert support here] because they were destroying top or mid people cried like crazy about how Riot is enforcing champions to only be played in certain roles. But now that marksmen can be viable in any other role other than bot the boards are crying that Riot ISN'T enforcing champion roles.

It Hertz When IP2 votes

The real question is, are we talking about the same set of people? Because I don't recall seeing the same names on both sides.

Leetri1 votes

And that's the thing, people on one side act like they're the majority and that everyone thinks like they do but there's clearly more than one opinion. People are quick to say "the boards isn't a hive mind" but they're even quicker to say "everyone clearly agrees, X is OP/weak/whatever". People don't seem to understand that there's opposing opinions on like everything, so they get angry when Riot doesn't cater to just them and ignore the other side.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

It gets even more fun when you realize that people come to complain, they rarely come to say "wow everything's fine!" Which means that all you get are the negative opinions, with the small number of positives coming from the people that frequent the boards all the time rain or shine.

Tbh, most potentially high-damage carries in an off-role tend to be over-bearing. A good Velkoz, Brand, or Lux support can easily carry with most damage. Even Veigar. In another case, Lucian mid, which has been viable since like...mid-S7, but no one bothered playing it. In another other case, took a look at Vayne in the toplane. She styles on most juggs or low mobility champs.

Raoul1 votes

Nearly every role but ADC can only be played in one position... And the only reason ADCs can go everywhere is because they are so damn broken that having one more of them totaly makes up for losing whatever other role could have filled the spot.

mages are played top, mid and support. Tanks are played top jungle support and some even mid. Assassins are played mid, jungle and top. Bruisers are played top, mid and jungle.

the mages played toplane almost never see play mid. The Tanks who are played as support are borderline useless everywhere else. The Bruisers who are played in the jungle are played there, because they cant lane. Assassins are a joke right now.

so? ezreal is in the jungle right now because he's worthless in botlane.

the mages played toplane almost never see play mid.

I've seen Cass, Swain and vlad top and mid.

The Tanks who are played as support are borderline useless everywhere else. The Bruisers who are played in the jungle are played there, because they cant lane.

There's still tanks/bruisers/mages/assassins in multiple lanes though.

Assassins are a joke right now.

not relevant to their positions

Enraged Piglet1 votes

I mean you can only play adc's in bot lane.

you can play assasains or mages or some semi-adcs like corki/lucian or even sometimes bruisers in mid lane

you do know not every single role has to be viable and op in mid lane for mid lane to be balanced right and even if you can only play mages or some other thing in mid at some point in time you also have to remember that's usually the same for every other lane as well. Then when junglers or any other role other then mid are able to play a champion even remotely similar to the traditional champions played in other roles people lose there minds.

Like you just said bot is op because only adcs are viable there

now mid lane is weak because you can only play mages there right now?

Also the adc's played top mid and jungle are all usully very differnt from the ones played bot and even the adc's that are played mid are usually differnt from the ones played in the jungle and top and the ones played top are usually differnt from the ones played in the jungle as well.

The thing about mid is that if adc's really do become strong you can play an adc mid if bruisers are strong you can play bruisers mid. If assasains are strong you can play them. Get my drift. Then not only are they strong but sense mid lane is a really strong place to be and effects the whole map a lot of the time those champions and roles can even at times be stronger mid than they are in there own role.

Jerry SeinfeId1 votes

I'm sorry if i misunderstood but i'm guessing you're saying adc are too strong because they are the only ones viable bot.

There's different champs who can go bot (yasuo, darius, sion, ziggs, etc) the problem is that adc are pretty much the only class that doesn't give a shit about levels. They rely 80% on gold and thus can share exp with a support. They also benefit from support kits better.

StairCasexd2 votes

Yeah but that's pretty much impossible. Unless they implement a system saying that Diana can only jungle and never mid or else ban or some nonsense. + like you said, I think it'd be a hit boring after a while.
