Why are Galio changes always such massive swings in power?

Z3Sleeper··65 votes·16,871 views

The most recent is a massive kneecap.

The one before was a massive overbuff.

The one before that was a massive overnerf.

And so on and so on.

Like, he's beyond strong right now that much is clear. But halving the Q AP ratio, reducing the other AP ratio on it, reducing the base, increasing the mana cost and nerfing the early base of his E?

Is the goal of all these Galio nerfs just to nerf him to oblivion so people complain and give you a reason to massively overbuff him again?

Because Riot's balancing team do not know what to do with him.

The cycle of Galio as of 24/01/2019:

  • He's olafed in places and given damage because of pro play.

  • The damage makes him broken in both.

  • Riot nerfs his damage and makes him unplayable everywhere.

  • Riot buffs him.

  • He becomes broken in pro play.

  • Repeat ad nauseam.

I sometime wonder if they shouldn't do the Zoe treatment.

Big ass nerf

Then try to see where you buff him so he feel good to play and fill his niche.

Because atm, we have like... almost the zoe treatment but without this idea of "We gut it, and then we work on fixing it bit by bit".

his abilities function in a way to make him seem like a supportive tank/engage mid (like the old Galio). Also, he is anti-AP. His kit is fine, just make it more supportive by lowering damage/ratios so he is encouraged to build tanky.

then buff his Q and E against minions so he has waveclear so he can solo lane imo.

cus right now, he's just a better version of TF. Global ult, but more waveclear, CC, and survivability

Just turn him into a tank please and thank you

Everything started when Galio was deleted and replaced with this Johnny Bravo Jersey Shore braindead generalist. Nobody complained about old Galio and he was never problematic. But Riot had the thought that the game needed another meatshield generalist tank.

If you ask me, a full revert is in order. League doesn't need more Gragas/Ornn/Sejuani copies.

I agree a kit rework while keeping his ult would have been way nicer :/ i miss old Galio [sg-ahri-1] Like old Galio looked like a gargoyle not like a random statue

I never understand why they keep buffing his dmg each time they buff him. No, really ehy they keep doing it while each other attempts result as making him way too strong. Stop buff is Q damnit.

Because it's a r%%%%%ed rework, and nobody wants to admit that

This most recent nerf wasn't a kneecap is was shooting off his legs then having the gall to be angry that he complained about you shooting off his legs because he has wings and why doesn't he just fly.

I find it frustrating that Riot likes to dumster their very best kits lately. (by best I mean having unique niche/utility/style) Azir, Taliyah, Galio, Tahm Kench - they will nerf them to oblivion and never go back.

Whereas Lee Sin and Zed will get dumpsters but they'll always try and get their kits back up to power in time for worlds. Why do they want people to see them and not their newer creations? It's very biased.

And where exactly did you see Zed in worls besides in season 4? LOL

Idk what crack u are on but everytime An overpowered champion is being discussed people cant help themselves but start crying about zed. Why?? There is shit like conqueror darius killing full armor tanks in like 5 seconds, essence reaver riven/jax with urf stuns, and you have the audacity to start complaining about zed - who is objectively one of the worst assassins at the moment? Just grow up sometime dude

I dunno how to respond to this but I felt like I should. Zed is hardly a problem for World's considering he has not seen one in ages. The unique style champions do get completely nerfed down to nothing.. I would have said Ryze over Tahm Kench though. Tahm is far too unbalancing in the game to be honest. He makes ADCs way too safe and has a semi-global as well.

But on the other hand, Lee Sin can be strong but hardly wrecks pro play and Zed is not even slightly important in pro play. Akali, Aatrox, both are played or banned in basically every pro game right now and are absolutely ruining the game.

I think the point is that want to see certain Champions at worlds, if they get there or not.

Like they'd love to have Lee Sin and Zed, Vayne, also Yasuo (wonder why Yasuo is never nerfed?.) If they get there or not it's clearly a bias.

On the other hand, they don't want Azir or Tahm Kench, apparently they don't want Rakan either. None of that defense or utility players-- boring I guess.

It is a terrible choice. The best World's that showcase the most skill and teamwork and actual knowledge of the game are done and gone it seems... :/

Assasins are rarely played in the lanes against galio because they are unreliable in both soloque and pro play for various reasons(lack of cc) Galio is an anti-mage(or supposed to be) and is a mage/tank anti mage. This means if he fullfiills his role to the T like he is supposed to, he counters all meta pro play picks. Champs like yasuo, talon, zed, and so on just arent meta in pro play because they are 1 and done style champs that really just annoys people, its not scary(unless your team turns toxic and starts opening the game the way they do in solo que). In pro play if galio can truly ANti-mage then he invalidates the roster in whatever lane he is in. Since bruisers have been turned into either burst sassins with no escapes(divers) or Juggernauts that cant ever actually STICK to anyone, they cant really be picked into him either, not because htey arent strong but because they cant carry or enable hard enough if they do get ahead(Kinda why top lane mains hate league rn). So His fringe case is just everything the balance team did wrong before means that this champ counters teh style of play they wish to see in lcs, so they cant let him remain viable.

Axzarious2 votes

If memory serves, it's because they want him to not only be a tank but also encourage him to build one or two damage items and be something like more of a bruiser. Or something like that. Either way, I remember the method being an incredibly stupid one for trying to achieve what they were going for and taking a few pages from Galio's old kit is apparently out of the question.

The key problem in this is probably because his AP ratios are often stupid-high when he's strong. Higher than old Galio. Higher than most mages. The primary culprit is his Q, though I could be wrong. It becomes a goddamn spammable nuke by not only chunking people, but also laying on a huge swath of max hp damage - Assuming he's sitting at 700 AP? Before the nerfs that's about 860 + 34% max hp. So basically he becomes a burst mage that also bursts tanks. Why build tanky when you can just build to delete targets outright? After all, death is the best CC.

If they really want him to build tanky while still having his bite... well, why not just add his old passive back into his kit? Old Galio gained AP based on 50% of his MR. Lower the AP scaling on his current abilities while you're at it? Might work out? I mean - it can't hurt to at least try, right?

MLDzXnRRR2 votes

Galio has problematic kit that can't be balanced unless he has very low numbers. Even now Galio can go full tank and stomp people, imagine him after the true damage IE removal - considering that most ADC players don't often go Last Whisper upgrade or do it last, he would be such a menace. His kit doesn't scream too much "mage" to me with only 1 real "magical" ability.

GigglesO2 votes

Damage changes are normally super high impact. On the other hand some base stat defense is pretty stable change to winrate. Riot refuses to buff defense.

Śhunpo2 votes

Because Riot creates IMBA reworked kits that can never be balanced. No one champion should have an entire kit (out of passive) devoted to CC while being an "anti-mage" champion while having burst damage. But of course, Riot thinks that's what Galio is now, a burst, tank, anti-mage, mage-bruiser, CC bot carry.

Syrile1 votes

He was just fine as an AP guardian style champion with team fight capabilities rather than this abominable one-shot mage thing. Even if it is "good" for me since I like him and he gives easy kills, I prefer the team-fight version of him much better. His whole persona is based on "Who wants to get protected" and such things. Yet now, he is a death machine rather than a protector. I was fine with high damage, AP tank. We have tons of high-damage, somewhat tanky people. AP makes no difference, regardless of the hate it gets. The problem is they do not want him good at team fighting, they want weird burst damage.

Anchorit Wracaj1 votes

Galio can't be turned into a tank... cause best offense is deffense...remmember it fellas. The burst/mobility meta...tanks have no spot in that meta

Winesmoke1 votes

This Galio Nerf is unfair! On top of that, Morello has been "nerfed" in gold value as well. I mean, at least give him lower CDs if u want to become simply a Tank OR give him less Mana costs. The damage nerf is already big!

4th3t0s1 votes

Well he's big

Düff McWhalen1 votes

Riot could always focus on making Galio an AP bruiser rather than the combination AP assassin/ tank he is.

Passive should be refreshed by auto attacks and the AP scaling dialed back and scaling with MR buffed, applies mini slow aoe akin to Iceborne. Weaker as a burst, but refreshes often for bigger hits that add up.

Q should be reduced further and apply a debuff akin to Shyvana E that procs off teammates and scales with MR

Taunt should get buffed to absorb more magic damage and the slow reduced (his burst is reduced to compensate)

E is fine as is

R needs it's utility back. I'd be fine with it doing zero damage as long as it was hard to get out of and actually slowed the people hit by it.

Accent his bruiser style, let him be an AP/MR fighter that can shrek mage comps, but not also kill everyone else while taking no damage.

Lot of weight to throw around

Because Riot Balance Team wants Galio to be a tank and also a massive burst mage. Its funny how they still havent noticed, that by being one, he cant be the other one. But I guess we will keep going on this roller coaster, till they realize that.

The Bearded Bard1 votes

Because he's arguably the only tank champion made for mid lane and it's oppressive af. Can't think of a single standard mid lane pick that can go toe to toe with that big asshat

It's like when they handled Evelynn. If she was good it was bad. If Galio is good, it is bad. If Mordekaiser is good, it is bad. If Volibear is good, it is bad.

Notice how it's the least played or most untouched champions (or used to be).
