Dear kill lane lux "support"s, here's why you should use spellthief instead of doran ring (MATH)
+
+25% mana regen
+10 AP
+Passive: every 10sec u get a stack that lets u do 13 extra damage on aa or ability lets leave out gold gain cuz kill lanes dont rely on that
+up to 450 additional HP from 3 potions
+
+60 HP
+50% mana regen
+15 AP
+Passive: Restores 4 mana upon killing a unit oh wait if u r lux "support" then u wont be getting mana from killing cs unless u r a troll actively trying to lose. You are forced to lose out on Doran ring's value because u r not last hitting minions otherwise.
+up to 300 additional HP from 2 potions
EDIT: some people are probably going to say that i should not compare +60 perma HP with +150 heal. While that's normally the case, +150 heal would be more valuable than a +60 perma HP for a kill lane that's aiming to get a kill before 1st back.
In this case, if you are going Doran's ring, you are getting additional +5 AP and +25% mana regen in exchange for 90 HP additional lane sustain and the damage passive. Since the reason kill lane lux supports opt for that +5 AP is for more damage, lets compare it with the spellthief damage passive:
..................................5 AP vs damage passive
aa modifier: +0 dmg vs +13 dmg
aa+lux passive: +1 dmg vs +26 dmg
Q modifier: +4 dmg vs +13 dmg
W modifier: do
E passive modfier: +4 dmg vs +13 dmg
R damage modifer: +3.75 dmg vs +13 dmg lux supports care?kill lane
If you go for pokes early on before going all-in, then spellthief is going to let you do more damage, as your QE abilities are on pretty high cooldown, and stacks should be up all the time unless you are spamming your QE mindlessly. If you are going for all-in, and you somehow manage to proc lux passive 3 times in addition to just QER, that would be 265% of AP. In that case, the 5 AP is going to give u an additional 13.25 damage while a 3x spellthief proc would give u whopping additional 39 damage on that combo. Poke or all-in, spellthief is way better than doran's ring in terms of damage.
Doran's ring still does win on mana sustain due to having 25% more mana regen than spellthief. Assuming you are somehow still in laning phase at level 9, that additional 25% mana regen will give you 0.57 mana per second, or 87.8 seconds to collect enough mana to use level1 Q one more time compared to when using spellthief. And the actual mana gain will vastly be lower because you are going to start as lv1 instead of lv9 in the game.
The mana sustain from Doran's Ring is very negligible compared to the amount of additional damage a spellthief passive can give you, and that's even if gold gain from the passive and item upgradeablility is left out.
