Can we do something about the endless amount of people entering ranked who are not ready...

YoungFarmer··29 votes·1,844 views

Honestly I get tons of people who have like less than 100 games played entering ranked and playing with or against me and they have absolutely no fucking idea what they are doing. Its not fair to me, is not fair to my team, its not fair to the enemy team and its especially not fair to the new player. 9 times out of a 10 a fresh level 30 will not even be up to a silver level of play unless they are A) a smurf or B) have moba experience.

I SWEAR, SERIOUSLY. I've lost like 90% of my games today. I had to carry every single one, and it just wasn't possible to win. Not even remotely close. The teammates I get are so freaking bad I just can't fully understand it. I cannot for the life of me get out of B1. It's just not possible. Even if you carry the crap out of the early game, they will throw and you will lose.

Doubtful lol. I'd say Your Average fresh 30 is bronze. Assuming he hasn't played against smurfs while leveling up. they wouldn't of learned much more than the absolute basics pre-30.

Most friends of mine generally do well Pre-30 than when they hit 30 they hit a massive wall. I've had some want to 1v1 me just for laning experience and advice and none of them are ever prepared for the things I just do naturally. Seeing as how I'm currently sitting S4, (Tanked my promos and have went 5-2 since) I can't say your average fresh out of the box lvl 30 should be anywhere near Silver.

There is just so much you need to know to be a below average player on top of having somewhat decent mechanics.

You can also generally tell who a smurf is. I have like 150 wins - 65 loses on my smurf and most the games in my last 10 levels where vs lvl 30s, some where Gold, Plat and even a couple diamonds.

How long have you been playing LoL though? Recently it takes half the time of before to reach lv 30. That means players are hitting 30 with half the IP, aka half the champs, runes, experience playing the game, etc.

Personally I got placed Silver 5 my first ranked season, but that was months after I hit lv 30. I too had never been a moba player. Heck, up to this point I played pokeman my whole life. However I think that if I had gone straight into ranked I probably would have hit bronze. High bronze maybe, but still bronze.

Remember that Bronze is the average for new players, that doesn't mean there aren't some outliers, especially if you have a talent for picking up new skills (Example I am very good at picking up skills quickly, I just rarely can bring myself to try and master them)

Bronze represents 30% of the ranked playerbase. If you are in the bottom 30% of players then you play at a Bronze level. You might occasionally push into Silver but you will fall back into Bronze. A new player can be expected to on average fall into the bottom 30% of players.

Gonna have to call you out on an aspect of your first point, sorry. Players will hit level thirty with half the IP, but they'll have the same amount of Champions as before, and not only that, people might have even more Runes. Here's why. First of all, people will still need sixteen Champions to enter ranked. That number hasn't changed, and in fact, it is increasing because of the increasing number of bans. When I hit level thirty, I only had seven Champions. That number would have been lower if I had hit level thirty sooner, but I would have still needed to spend the same amount of time grinding up to the required sixteen Champions. Secondly, players could jump into ranked without Tier Three Runes before. They could just hit the required Champion limit and jump into ranked. Since the required Champion limit is still the same (and is going up in the near future), players will still take the same amount of time to get those 16 Champions, and therefore still have the option to jump into Ranked without Tier Three Rune pages. The reason why I say people might have more Runes is because Tier Two Runes were discounted shortly (two months) after the level requirements were changed. People can now easily jump into ranked with full Rune Pages, even though they're not Tier Three. Tier Three Runes don't provide much of an advantage over Tier Two Runes, anyways. Basically, it's easier for people to get the stats they need for ranked while it's still the same difficulty to get Tier Three Runes.

Fondling Gems2 votes

Really? Only 7 champions at lv 30? I easily had 13-14 by that point and I just snagged up 2 450 ip Champs to get the 16 champions needed. I also had a full tier 3 rune page at this point. I then played like 2 ranked games before realizing I needed to practice more and didn't play ranked for a couple months.

Also although I didn't make it clear I don't believe owning 16 champions means you play 16 champions or you actually put effort into obtaining 16 champions. This is due to the existence of 450 ip champions that are very easy to buy to reach 16 champions even if you never plan to play them. I can personally say I did this. I played Annie, one of my first 16 champions, for the first time last year.

The existence of 450 ip champions skews things because I know a ton of people hitting 30 buy them up for ranked because they take 2-4 games to earn. As such I find players have X number of champions and Y number of fill ins for ranked, where Y is 16-X. As such most new lv 30 players I meet only have X number of champions they wanted or know how to play, the rest are just for ranked. 450 champions are so cheap in comparison to other champions that they add a flat number of games required after hitting 30 to play ranked. Changing how quickly one hits 30 changes how many 450 champions they need to buy, but 450 champions are so cheap that it only has a small effect on games needed.

Think of it this way: Before to hit level 30 I had to play X games, lets say 100 for nice numbers as the actual amount doesn't really matter in this context. Over that time I got Y ip to spend on champions that I wanted. Lets call that 20000 ip. That means I have 20000 ip to spend on champions that I want to learn right? Well lets just say that gets us 10 champions. We now need 6 more to play ranked! Well the cheapest ones are only 200 ip compared to the average 2k ip of the ones I wanted. Pre 30 I got 200 ip per game with a 2X ip boost. That means to get 6 champions to play ranked I have to play 12 games.

  • In this situation it took the player 112 games to meet ranked requirements.

New situation, number of games to hit 30 halved. This means I get to 30 after 50 games and with 10000 ip. Instead of 10 champions I only got 5. That means I need 11 champions to play ranked. 1 game still equals 100 ip and the cheapest champions are 200 so I need to play 22 games.

  • In this situation it took the player 72 games to meet ranked requirements.

(Please note that the numbers here are not accurate as they exist to present the math in a simple and easy to comprehend way. Though actual values differ the results still show that 1/2 ranked time = less ip and less champions.)

It is human nature to want to achieve something as we complete steps towards it. Getting to lv 30 means we can play ranked: regardless of our number of champions there is a good chance a player will want to try it right away. They try to play and realize they need 16 champions. They then take the shortest route towards getting 16 champions even if they aren't going to use the ones they are filling in for ranked. This means that they would not own or play as many champions as they would if it took longer to hit lv 30.

.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Your reasoning makes sense. Now I agree, players will generally try to utilize something that they just unlocked as soon as possible, so they'll generally buy cheaper Champions in order to get to playing Ranked as soon as possible, decreasing the overall experience players get before heading into ranked.

If you want to know why I had only seven by level thirty, here's a breakdown of my pre-thirty IP purchases. By level 30, I had purchased Lissandra (6300), Vi (6300), Sona (3150), 9 Greater Seals of Scaling Health (410 x 9 = 3690), 9 Greater Marks of Magic Penetration (410 x 9 = 3690), 9 Greater Glyphs of Scaling Magic Resist (205 x 9 = 1845), 3 Greater Quintessences of Ability Power (1025 x 3 = 3075), 9 Greater Seals of Armor (205 x 9 = 1845), 9 Greater Marks of Attack Damage (205 x 9 = 1845), 9 Greater Glyphs of Cooldown Reduction (820 x 9 = 7380), 3 Greater Quintessences of Attack Speed (1025 x 3 = 3075), and the 2015 MSI Icon (1 IP). Together, this totals 42196 IP.

(The other four Champions I had came from giveaways: Quinn , Garen , Tristana , and Alistar .)

After I got my last Quintessences, I bought these Champions: Leona (4800), Ahri (4800), Shyvana (3150), Karthus (3150), Irelia (4800), Syndra (6300), Galio (4800), Jinx (6300), and Urgot (3150). (Around the end before I purchased my final Champion Urgot , I also purchased a few icons, 2015 Worlds (1 IP), Icy Minion (1500 IP), Snowball Fight (100 IP), Unleashed Penguin (100 IP), Traveler's Penguin (100 IP), and Penguin Toss (100 IP).) Together, these Champions total 41250 IP (43151 with icons), which took quite a while to get. Match History isn't working and neither is the LoLReader (I think updating to the new client must have changed my Logs folder to make it unreadable to the tool), so I can't give you the number of wins it took me to finally get Urgot.

Fondling Gems2 votes

Ah, that would do it. Pretty sure my only 6300 champion was Vi, I lived on Ahri Ezreal and Taric for my first few months of LoL. After that I mostly just got champs in the 3150 and lower range for a while until Thresh I believe, but that was after I was 30 IIRC.

I know their was Veigar and the Free Trist in there, maybe Soraka? I think I got Urgot too. IDK, been a while and my memory has always been pretty bad. At lv 30 I think I only had 3-4 champs of the 4800+ variety so that would explain our champ pool differences.

Yes definitely, you spent more IP on Champions since you only bought one Rune Page, and you bought more cheap Champions so you had very many more. I would have had even less if it weren't for Riot's giveaways. I remember my pre-thirty experiences and the order in which I got my Champions pretty well, but the reason why I'm sure of the exact order I got them in is because I scrolled through my Match History a few weeks ago to my first game. Quite nostalgic, and it also allowed me to see the order of my purchased Champions since I'd generally play them shortly after I bought them. You could do that too, if you had the time and something to take notes on. EDIT: Apparently you did!

Also, it's funny, I bought a lot of female Champions without even trying to do that. I bought Lissandra because my friend said she was a top tier mage who professionals used, I bought Vi because my friend used her when playing with me, I bought Sona because she was just fun and easy to use, I bought Leona because she was the highest rated support on Twisted Treeline (I wanted to play Twisted Treeline ranked with my friends), I bought Ahri because she was a highly rated middle laner, and so on. I just bought what was strong and/or what seemed fun.

LoLReader was just not working because I had transferred to a new computer and the logs were on the old one, apparently.

Here's the thing though. Go find yourself a Fresh Lvl 30, no prior Moba experience. Then find yourself the run of the Mill Silver 5 whose play a season or two. I will bet money that Silver 5 will crush the 30. Your 1st placements are to nice, you should have to work your way up from the lowest tier. In Season 3 I was gifted Silver 3 going 4-6 in Provs. After that I fell to S5 and stopped playing ranked before I was demoted.

I wasn't ready to play ranked back then I and I made my teammates who were ready worse off for having me on there team. Luckily for me now in my S4 games I still play with/wasn't former golds/plats and I for the most part of been getting my ass torn up, but I'm at least good enough to play from behind. Your average fresh 30 would of given up by that point.

I came to League from CoD, I was prolly in the top 5-10% of the playerbase in the 8-10years I played it seriously. When it got boring to me, my irl friends all got me to switch to league. Back then they would of been high gold/low plat.

So I had 0 Moba/RTS experience but I had people mentoring and I still wasn't ready for what was in store for me and I literally destroyed my pre-30. I honestly feel that the people who have Moba experience are the minority, League is a popular game with a massive esports so people flock to it without any real Moba experience.

Your average fresh 30 is no better then most bronzes, it takes hundreds of games not just a couple hundred to truly understand some of the little things, let alone the big things like wave manipulation.

I see your point though.

Lauchmelder2 votes

He's partially right. Fresh 30s used to be around low silver level on average. Now it's more like bronze because they amount of XP needed to get to level 30 was halfed or smth.

Basically: They have to play less games to get to level 30 now, thus being worse than a season+ ago.

Not that fresh 30's were any good back then. I remember when I made the transition from lv 29 playing with other pre 30's and when I finally reached 30 and played with people who were playing for a much longer period. It wasn't pretty.

When i first started playing back in s2 I knew i wasnt ready for a ranked game, so out of respect for the players that were ready I stayed out of ranked until I felt i was mechanically ready. Fast forward to today, I have played at the bare minimum 5 games a day every single day since I started. I missed two days back when my oldest daughter was born and even learned how to feed my little newborn baby AND play at the same time. As a side note holding a baby while playing forces you to stay out of the rage zone and make DAMN good decisions, you never know when this kid is going to need a burp.

Anyways I waited a couple of years till I thought I was ready and decided to play my very first ranked game. I knew I could win, i've played waaaay more than most people at my level and I was winning 90% of my normal games. Well I'll never forget that first game because it fucked me for ranked pretty hard. I decided that before I play ranked I win 500 games with the champ I'm most likely to win with (Ahri at the time) and I should absolutely dominate. played about a thousand Ahri games was super confident. I put ranked on a pedestal and took it super seriously. I get mid, tell people to check my match history (hadnt lost an ahri game in 20 games) and proceed to get rofl stomped by the enemy riven. I will never forget this to this day, im in mid lane against leblanc who has been anything but easy since i cant land a single charm on her and this level 6 riven flashes out of top mid bush and stuns me, im SMASHING my r button, i get one dash off and then she wind slashes and kills me. We lost that game, and the Riven literally 1v4's us completely by herself without a single team mate and wins the game.

I decided I was still shit and all the time on ahri was essentially wasted since that time didn't produce a win. I hadn't warded the mid bush and I paid for it. I decided that before I play another ranked game that I had to win another 100 games. league consumed my life, I read and studied everything league for hours and hours every single day. If I had a break at work, I was studying a champ and his counters, studying jungle routes and meta champs.

In the end, Ive played everyday for nearly 6 years, though ive never been placed bronze, I havent moved up a single division out of silver. Currently I am completely unranked with maybe 6 out of my 10 first games played. My friends think I can make it to diamond easy and they are always telling me im one of the best and I believe them since I feel like I have to carry every single game if I want to win any at all but the truth is that im in silver and ive never gotten out of silver despite all the practice and study ive put into the game. If I lose a ranked game I feel i deserve it, there is something I could have done better, maybe if i hadnt missed that one skill shot we could have won the game. To this day I don't feel like Im ready for ranked. I still lose games when someone like me should be winning them, I belong in silver, silver accurately describes my skill level and im ok with that.

To anyone reading this, I have one small bit of advice. Don't make the same mistakes I made, the MAIN reason I lost my ranked games is because I wasn't EVER playing champs that were META or FOTM because of pride reasoning. I was a narcissist and i believed I was better because of my practice and game knowledge. You ARE NOT better than whats currently OP. BAN THE OP CHAMPS, dont do stupid shit like me and let them through because "practice and skill", BAN THEM. PLAY THE OP CHAMPS no matter how ugly they are, no matter how empty they make you feel after you dominate with them (wow thats so much easier than ahri). It's ok, lose that pride. It's literally how the pro's climbed to where they are, they played what was powerful, climbed, THEN practice other champs against opponents that are actually worth their time. This season I won't make the same mistakes, I will be leaving silver behind for good.

also, ahri is and always has been super strong.

JRobin313 votes

The issue isn't that players are "not ready for ranked". Players should be free to decided when they want to play ranked games because you can't require that players have an "idea of what they are doing". There is no way to quantify that without having them play ranked games and actually show that they don't have any idea what they are doing.

Requiring that players play a certain amount before entering ranked play is reasonable and can help mitigate the issue (it will never remove it). For example, a mastery requirement on 16 champions would go a significant way towards preparing players for ranked play, but even if RIOT implemented this, players would still show up lacking a lot of the skills you or others apparently take for granted.

TL;DR The whole point of playing ranked is to sort players according to their skill. You can't sort them according to skill before they even play ranked, because that would imply there is rank before you even play ranked. [slayer-jinx-catface]

it's never too early to start playing ranked. That is the reason why some people are bronze, silver, gold etc... because someone else is not as good. They will eventually make it to their proper elo but initially it does tend to over rate a brand new level 30.

Unfortunately not allowing them to ranked turns new players away meaning less $$, we all know what that means for Riot. No but seriously, just because you're level 30 with 16 champions doesn't mean you should play your favorite trinity force lux top with ghost heal.

Currently rank requirements are level 30 & must own 16 champions.

To make rank slighter better is at least these 16 champions all must be level 5. It would help & decrease the amount of smurfs a little bit.

They still need to get the same amount of Champions though. I hit level 30 with 7 Champions. If I had only needed to get half the experience, I still would have had to spend the same amount of time getting the required amount of IP to buy 16 Champions in order to play Ranked.

You're right that if players try to jump into ranked right away by buying cheap Champions then they'll have less experience, but those Champions are very easy to use (with the exception of Ryze and Poppy), so players shouldn't have to spend too much time figuring out their kits to perform well. They won't get as much experience overall but at least they'll have a pool of easy Champions.

Also, you still never told me the rest of your thoughts on this.

One of the problems is that Riot seems to be trying to diminish normal games/queues and push people into ranked more. With the removal of Normal Draft in most regions I think a lot of people resort to Ranked Draft as their everyday queue, because Normal Blind is just cancer.

Riot is intentionally trying to push more and more people into playing ranked, and now they're just flat out diminishing your ability to play anything else. So blame them for all of your inexperienced teammates.

Chalangar1 votes

You shouldn't be able allowed to pick a champ in ranked that you aren't currently at least a level 4 mastery in.

This way people will have had time to learn their champ to a decent level, and they'll understand some of their mechanics, their counter plays, how to team fight, etc.

This also disincentivises smurfs who will have to spend more time to move up the ranks, ensuring that the people at any given rank are actually at that level of skill.

Furthermore, you should only be allowed to play ranked once you've got level 4 champ for 1 role in every lane/position.

This way you'll know how to play all roles, you'll understand all roles and how they work within the team. Then if you want to focus on only one or two positions, at least you'll understand the plight of your fellow teammate and not want to end up flaming them .

could be solved by having to own more then the current amount of champions. or make sure they own at least 5 champs for each specific role. people have made points about only letting people in who have at least a mastery lvl 4 with certain champions.

and personally i got nothing against people needing to have at least mastery lvl 4 with a champ, before he can play said champ in ranked to begin with.

If they are bad then they will get placed in a low elo and you wont have to play them because (I am assuming) you are better than them. If you are stuck in an elo with people you feel are bad, sorry but they probably have similar mmr to you. I think 100 games is plenty of time to accurately assess their mmr even if it's not enough time for them to get good at the game. If after 100 games they end up in the same elo as you, well, sorry but that's your elo.

Literally just played a game with someone who hadn't played since 2015, and just jumped into ranked.
