The reason people are upset about autofill is because of the psychological effect role selection has

TheLittlestLulu··76 votes·4,346 views

Previously choosing a role was based on pick order, and this heavily encouraged the idea that everyone should be at least decently comfortable with the various roles, but then Riot added role selection which encouraged an entirely different idea that you should focus on climbing with the roles you are already most comfortable with. You can imagine how players who end up getting this idea in their head will get upset when Riot adds a system on top of that which says "lol no you get this role you didn't want instead have fun poophead".

People who keep pointing out entitlement and that the previous system existed seem to be missing that the new system holds an implication that breeds entitlement. You can no longer expect everyone to try to be comfortable with all the roles and games end up getting decided by which team has the most autofilled players who got the roles they are bad at.

Basically Riot really needs to commit to a system. Either make a system that encourages being functional at all the roles (the previous system) or make a system that encourages commitment to specific roles (the current system without autofill). Don't make a system that gives the illusion of something it's not.

Autofill exists as a bandaid for queue times, not for any other reason. Ideally, Riot would be perfectly happy to have the current queue without autofill, but...

WoonStruck24 votes

I didn't notice shorter queue times after auto-fill was enabled.

In addition, the constant dodges due to auto-fill have realistically increased pre-game times.

You don't notice shorter queue times compared to pre-Draft-update because before the new Draft pick was enabled, five random people would be matched together. Now, the system gives some preference to people's preferred roles, so queue times are longer because of that. Autofill balances that out and roughly makes queue times the same as they were before the implementation of the new Draft Pick. On the other hand, with Autofill, queue times are certainly shorter than they were without autofill.

except i have to apply queue time for like 9 lobbies before i get into game

oh and because there is a dodge penalty people try to play chicken with other autofilled players so 1 sec before game starts someone leaves

which is like 5 minutes later or the same time as the dodge penalty which makes these last second dodgers seem really stupid since they just penalized them selfes with a 5 minute wait anyway

however everyone else is punished too

it's no fun waiting in queue for 4 minutes then 5 minute lobby then queue for 4 minute then 5 minute lobby and so fort

only for the game to be decided by minute 10

i got downvoted loads for saying this, now suddenly everyone is realizing what I was saying months and months ago is right? At least others are catching on thank fuck, maybe one day League will be playable again.

Riot have still basically lost me permanently, I'll never play League again like I used to, but I'd at least like to play SOME league without having to have fucking autofill ruining my game and tilting me before I even get to play my proper role.

Yep. It's a shitty band-aid fix that didn't even solve the problem AND CREATED A MUCH BIGGER ONE.

And plenty of people have stated that they'd be willing to wait longer to get their preferred role.

At this point Riot is purposely shooting themselves in the foot. There is no 'Riot WANTS to remove autofill' excuse, because if they did, they would.

Judging by the words of players in high level queues, there are few fewer such people than you think.

What players? Sounds like you are just saying a random statement and adding in a "Fact" I haven't actually seen (I'm here all the time, as well as twitter and Reddit, so I'm calling B.S. on more than 2 people ever saying that), to try and make some point.

Here are some threads from before autofill. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/xjOrZL72-queue-times http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/GD/g8bEoxfK-high-elo-players-smurfing-to-dodge-queue-times https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/44tjlu/froggen_just_sat_through_a_3_hour_queue_time/ http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/VNMf4Hwb-queue-times-are-unacceptably-long

Also, if you remember this announcement, Riot tried to reduce queue times for high MMR players because they were complaining, but then we got an influx of posts about imbalanced matches at high MMRs because Riot's algorithm was too lax. I'm having some trouble finding posts complaining about high MMR matchmaking at that specific time since people are always complaining about matchmaking, but I do remember many more posts about matchmaking after Riot tried to make queue times too short, if you'll take my word for that. Riot took a step back and released this post, which came out as matchmaking tightened up in high tiers of play: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/dynamic-queue-matchmaking-update

they are ultra high level, perhaps their playerbase is so small that just having 5 ongoing matches means the entire playerbase is currently engaged.

But for anyone like Diamond 2 and below, that is just not the case. Diamond 5 I was finding games in minutes.

Octavia1 votes

I reached Diamond V last season and autofill is the worst thing ever put in League.

Also, why does high level matter?

Less players yes. LESS CARRIES ETC YES.

Just because the playerbase is smaller doesn't mean all the players want carry roles and barely any want support, it's scaling.

Aka... 100 players 10 supports at Diamond 1

10000 players 1000 supports at bronze v.

So... no difference pretty much.

Yeah I'm just tired of people bringing up the previous system.

Like yeah we know it existed, but Riot replaced it with this new system which implies they wanted the game to go in a different direction with role distribution, but then backpedaled by adding autofill and creating this contradictory mess.

Warlord Scrap7 votes

the problem is no one wanted to play support so que times were longer. this system only works if all roles are equally played. did you ever hear of mag for the ps3. sver had the longest que times and raven the shortest becausee of the team distributions.

YoungFarmer6 votes

I just don't like how even in normal draft I go in thinking "oh hey I wanna go karthus mid, or maybe play a little jungle" so I pick that because I want to have a little fun and then auto fill is like ha get rekt you're going adc that role you don't like at all.

Jesus is Savior5 votes

The problem is also the psychological effect that NO ONE wants to negotiate roles. "Play what you were given you scrub" is the general mentality. In the old system you could negotiate.

Adriqnohee4 votes

Meh it goes from people to people, I have met plenty of "I choose first so shut up and deal with it" in the old system.

Octavia1 votes

it was less so. In the old system I'd say at least 14/15 times I could get out of support as last pick.

Hexs Fortune2 votes

What about people who main support? They get their role every game

Sandrahy2 votes

I have actually gotten filled into the other roles as support/fill. [zombie-brand-clap]

People ignore the fact auto-fill/fill doesn't only apply to support. But for the roles that are lacking players.. (in most cases support/adc)

But those moments I know how other players feel being filled into the support role.

Being 5th pick before the new draft system was added was basically fill or dodge... ######....or you know... troll your team mates because you are a diamond 1 smurf....

Krigjer2 votes

Being 5th pick before the new draft system was added was basically fill or dodge...

That's why I'm a support main. I always filled, and the role I filled was almost always support. I got used to playing it, and now it's my preferred role.

That said, autofill doesn't always mean you get support. I've been tossed mid a few times despite ALWAYS queueing support.

Xonra1 votes

Nupe

I've had auto fill activated, put support primary, and got auto filled into jungle multiple times (another person also with auto fill enabled putting support primary). And since someone else had my secondary, it put me jungle (which I'm garbage can at).

It isn't auto support even for us support mains. Which is the most stupid part of it to be honest, since support is supposedly the "only real issue".

Warlord Scrap1 votes

from anecdotal evidence it seems the role priority in general is mid>top>jg>bot>sup

Xonra1 votes

That doesn't nullify my point against the fact that "support mains get their role every game" being incorrect. You can say as high as 70% but that's about it.

MrHaZeYo2 votes

Good point, but wouldn't the new system mean, be good at your two best but be prepared to play your worst? Meaning to continue to get better at your better roles be also put some practice in your least desired roles?

SpecterVonBaren6 votes

I'm at a high enough level now that practicing something I'm not proficient in gets me nothing because it just turns into a stomp. Particularly when my worst role is marksman and I die instantly to all the burst in the game.

50Shades0fTrynda2 votes

its true, but there is enought confortable way to avoid it... by playing one of our first ranked matches of the day as a support(sicne 95+% is autofiled as support)

this is how i did it : Morgana

Xonra2 votes

You are assuming it is just support people don't want to be auto filled into. I actually get tossed into jungle rather often, have to dodge, then queue up as support primary to avoid it. I am a garbage can jungler, and it is near an instant loss for my team if I get it (kind of the most important role, and you are making someone who has no clue how to play it, play it...good luck with that).

50Shades0fTrynda1 votes

jungle ...Interesting.

You unconsciously led me into trying Morgana in jungle when autofilled :)

I only assumed that its mostly support role that is autofilled...because it is in general ,for now

Nah, I played since season 3 and I had my fair share of people autolocking despite them being last pick.

Irelia Bot3 votes

I see people auto locking their desired position when first pick and were auto filled something they don't want sometimes.

It is like nothing changed in the long run.

WoonStruck1 votes

I've played since season 1 and there were very few instances of this.

They're the same people that would throw a fit if they got auto-filled, and would be just as likely to hold the role hostage.

Nothing has changed.

In fact, I got my desired role MORE in the old system.

Octavia1 votes

100% agreed, I could go game after game with my proper role and negotiate it otherwise.

Out of the 3 systems, it's debatable whether the original draft pick or pre autofill was better.

But WITH autofill, this system is the WORST YET.

Irelia Bot1 votes

I learned to play support so I would be able to be on 2 positions well over 75% of the time.

I got rewarded for understanding and applying the concept of supply and demand.

Octavia1 votes

Cool story lol, and you're gold so you hardly learned anything, you managed to get very slightly above average in two roles... lol.

I got rewarded for understanding and applying the concept of supply and demand.

Whatever you're trying to say here is meaningless.

Irelia Bot2 votes

I lost interest in trying for diamond mid season 5 and stopped playing for most of season 6 because I was not finding the game worthwhile playing anymore.

But if you are saying I did not get rewarded and only a gold you might need to look at seasons 4 and 5.

Riot "Well, glad you like it. Except now when you que up for Draft, you get to pick which two roles you want, then we make you play an entirely different role!" Draft Pick = Pick your role except you don't.

I'm sorry what? Will Riot ever admit to how fucktarded they come across as?

That doesn't make any sense. Yes, you choose the roles that you want, the roles that you have a preference for, and if the current queue situation cannot accommodate you, then you will be filled to a role that is different than the ones that you wanted. You're right, you don't pick your role. You give your preference.

Dynamiku Entry3 votes

The current situation can and does accomodate me, it's called waiting longer in que for the roles I signed up for If I wanted a fast match with no regard to pick order I'd go into a Blind Pick. Because there's a whole que for that

No, Riot gives us a que with the specific purpose of letting us choose where we go, since it replaced Team Builder. If you don't understand the situation, then try not to speak upon it. It really makes you look empty and shallow and full of hot air.

I do understand the situation. The reason why Riot cannot let people play the roles they ask for is because of the deficiency of Supports. When there are significantly higher amounts of people queueing for roles other than support (which is the case), a large amount of people in queue builds up. A Support, primary, secondary, or fill, gets paired with them almost as soon as he or she queues up, but because many people do not put Support or Fill compared to the amount of people putting other roles, queue buildups are resolved slowly. Some people like going Support, but they don't like going Support all the time. With this system, they are forced into Support almost all the time, even if they do not want it. This discourages people to queue as secondary Support or Fill, because they grow tired of the role. This further increases queue times. Support mains get to play Support every game, which is great for them, but the fact that they are getting their role does nothing to decrease queue times. Now, as the Matchmaker waits longer and longer to create a match, it begins to pull players from different MMRs. This would undoubtedly happen if Autofill were removed, because wait times would become much longer due to the issues I have described. (Remember, right now, any player can be a Support as long as he or she is queueing for ranked. Without Autofill, you have much less than one-fifth the players available for Support.) As the acceptable MMR range for the match increases as time increases, you will get lower and lower quality matches. People already complain about matchmaking now. Imagine what it will be like without Autofill! Yes, now you get people playing off-roles, but at least everyone's knowledge of the game and everyone's mechanics are similar, which I believe are more important than higher knowledge of one's role. I don't think you understand how long Team Builder queues would be right now. Queue times were ridiculously long when players were forced to choose at least two roles. Team Builder gave players one role. That's unreasonable.

Octavia1 votes

The reason why Riot cannot let people play the roles they ask for is because of the deficiency of Supports.

Then I accept a longer queue. And the queue is barely longer, forcing players to play support creates skips.

I don't think you understand how long Team Builder queues would be right now. Queue times were ridiculously long when players were forced to choose at least two roles.

I played 1.3k Quinn games last season without autofill, longest queue I had was about 20 mins, shortest was less than a minute, just a few seconds.

Generally around 5 mins.

Very few skips, HIGH QUALITY MATCHES, GOT THE ROLE I WANT.

NO competition, great system and worked well.

Dynamiku Entry1 votes

Do you know what loss aversion is? How losing something feels worse then gaining something? You need to gain twice as much to equate something you lost. So, we GAIN the option of either A) Choosing our role B) Shorter que time. But what ends up happening, if we get autofilled we A) LOSE the role we wanted B) People doj que anyway, meaning we lose time ANYWAY and get autofilled ANYWAY.

Riot is forcing its playerbase to experiance loss aversion, and no gains lately feel like they are worth playing the game. I could play the game. I might have fun. But unless I'm playing bots there's too great a chance I'll either get autofilled, get an autofilled person on my team, get a troll/toxic person, someone on tilt, afker, bad match up, ect
