Why does Evelynn's E only have a 225 range?

Barcid··50 votes·2,524 views

That's not even half her detection bar, just barely over melee range for most champs, and even trying to close the gap with proto-belt doesn't get you into range from stealth.

Which, okay, getting jumped out of nowhere probably isn't fair, except that her W tells you the direction Eve's coming from anyway and is entirely critical to Eve getting out a full burst of damage. So you're not even really getting jumped from out of nowhere anyway to begin with so there's damn near no reason to have this short of an E range.

Especially when her only escape would be to use her ult early, taking out almost all of her damage from her kit after it's been used and placing it on an asininely long cooldown while also being crystal clear where she's going to be ending up because it's directly backward from where she ulted.

Especially when her only mobility from anywhere other than her ultimate is also on her fucking E since she can no longer speed boost into range - she gets the speed boost instead when she puts herself in range, which is entirely ass backwards for her combo and makes practically no sense whatsoever.

The hell is this range so short for?

Edit: So to clear up: A lot of people say it's to release the champion underpowered and buff it afterward so it doesn't completely stomp games.

Which is fine. It's not bad to undersell her numbers. But there's also absolutely no practicality to her right now. Her abilities aren't practical in that using them in the manner they're meant to be used usually puts you in more danger than a decent champion would have or relies upon enemies to mess up immensely with their positioning to where Eve has the time to sneak up on someone while they can't notice her. But the amount of times this could reasonably happen versus how most games play out is extremely small.

As she is now, Kha'Zix does better than her in terms of being a stealthy assassin and just as an assassin in general. Evelynn like this literally doesn't have the practicality to give reason to pick her over someone else unless you're just really hurting for AP and don't have any other options. There's really no reason to both undersell her damage and the ease of use in her kit when it's not like Janna levels of reliable to begin with. 225 range is asininely low and makes quite literally no sense in terms of an offensive gap closer. At that point the range might as well just be melee range and flip her to the other side of the enemy like Warwick's, but still leaves the pressing question of how she'd get there in the first place.

Eve has 225 on her e because riot doesnt know what the fk wants her to be. She is supposed to be an assassin. With a shitty ass early game, low burst ( or rather shitty burst. Im pretty sure leona full ap has more burst than eve early on) , a sometimescharm that as a spell would work the better if she plays tanky, an e thats barely bigger than her aa and rewards her for hitting tanks instead of squishies and an ulti that actually is the only thing that reminds an assassin ( which for some reason is not an execute, rather it deals double dmg ).

Wanna hear the worst part? She is going to remain that way for quite a while. They buffed her dmg e which wasnt the problem instead of range. So yeah expect heavy dipshittery from riot when it comes to evelynn for a while.

New Eve plays better as a tank/bruiser than as an assassin? So nothing has changed. Good rework riot. You took out AD and on-hit builds and she still performs better by building literally anything but AP assassin.

I mean, item 3116 is well-known for being an assassin item afterall, that's why it's in her recommended set.

they might just be saving her for views later on. When a pro scene is approaching they might buff her to bring in views and the casters going "OMG!! THIS IS THE BEST SHIT EVER! I NEVER KNEW THIS CHAMPION EXISTED OHH MY GOD! THEY'RE PLAYING LEE SIN AGAIN TO COUNTER EVELYNN! THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!! " or something like that.

Camille release is why they are super cautious nowadays. You can't blame them.

Eve is getting buffs so all we can do is wait and see.

I'd personally like her to get a partial cd reduction on the ult if it kills someone.

So, no partial cd reduction then...

Pretty much this. After many OP releases, they really don't like starting at a higher power level. They also have overbuffed champions after release like Ivern or Zac so I think Riot is really in tight spot where they don't want things to become too strong.

It's it easy to release a 50% winrate champ.

Riot has been overly cautious lately about releasing overpowered champs. The last several champs have been underpowered (Kayn, Ornn, and now Evelynn). It's like the champs are nerfed upon release, and then Riot is really slow to lift the nerfs for fear that maybe the champion's only under-performing because nobody's learned to master the champ yet. I'd almost rather they released a 50% winrate champ, and then IF people master it and find ways to bring that winrate up, then Riot can respond with nerfs. I think that would be the healthier way to release a champ.

Oh didn't you hear? It's always better to release neutered champions, that way nobody gets to learn the champion in the first place because nobody has the will to play something so useless and teammates still ban said champion weeks after release for fear of their teammates playing it.

And since the champion isn't being played there's no reason to nerf/buff them since there isn't much data on their performance.

I mean, she did just get (re)released. Riot's preferring to err on the side of caution, now, by releasing champions too weak, as opposed to crushingly strong. And I can't blame them for that at all. I'd rather a champion be released too weak than have to have another must-ban for two weeks.

I'm pretty sure they stated that they were waiting until new runes hit live since it could majorly effect her power. Either way I'd rather have underpowered and buffed than overpowered and nerfed.

If her W gave the location arrow after 1 second instead of 2.5 (giving the 1.5 second reaction time set for assassins), she could get away with having a much smaller detection radius. As is, the fact that the arrow only comes up once they can already be charmed means Evelynn has to be able to be seen from much further away to make the combo fair to interact with.

I'm perfectly fine with Eve compromising 1.5 seconds of 100% stealth if it means she can have her old movement speed and detection range back. Her charm is the most auxiliary change to her kit, and its current implementation is holding her other mechanics back significantly.

Gah I wish they went back to releasing broken ass champs then just toning them down.

Shit makes the game more fun imo

item 1402 summoner 11 Blue Smite can proc the charm

Sure the range on E isn't great and it used to annoy me a lot, but then I found out you can use Blue/Chilling Smite to proc the charm from a decent range (unlike her E) and cannot miss the intended target (unlike her Q) which makes her entire engage fantastic. So while yeah I'd very much like to see a range buff, I can live with it now.

DenoueMOD1 votes

That is an incredible waste of smite.

Yukínose1 votes

IIRC, you do not proc the charm from smite. SS and item actives don't proc the charm, only abilities and autoattacks.

What it does, do, however, is let you smite, and then get very easy Q1s or Es on the target.

Incorrect. I've done it myself recently. Smite can definitely proc the charm

It isn't because they want her to be underpowered. Right now, the E is likely fine. If its range were higher, then it would make i too easy for her to jump on people from stealth, leading to a guaranteed point-and-click charm > 100-0 burst.

Honestly, right now Evelynn is nothing more than a "Win more" champion.

She becomes absolutely useless unless your team is already dominating.

darkmatchwaldo1 votes

Yo how many times does Eve's W need to be explained to people that do not get it. The indicator is straight up useless. It doesn't tell them where you are until the W is a charm. You have 2.5 seconds after you press it until your direction is revealed. All you have to do is walk waaaay behind them, press w, kite backwards with them, and then step into E range as the W turns into a charm.

They will literally be walking straight into your E range because you're standing between them and their turret. The amount of people who do not understand this is baffling. If you play the situation right, you bait them into walking wherever you are standing. You don't need any range on your E when they walk straight into it. It doesn't matter if stepping into E range reveals you, they HAVE to walk at you. They are now faced with the choice of turning to fight your Pantheon, or eating your charm and still getting combo'd by Pantheon.

Rather than start a new thread I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents to this point. After experimenting with her for about a week I have to agree on the E range. On top of the range making it near useless as a gap closer, it triggers on hit effects which doesn't fit any viable build you can make with her. So what's the point of it? It really feels like her basic damage needs something, like an on hit passive boost to basic attacks. Then on hit builds might be viable.

I tried an on-hit build and it didn't work very well compared to a standard AP build. You have to spend time hitting them in melee and with your health so low you don't last very long. Attack speed doesn't fit her kit and she does garbage damage until you get a few major on-hit items. It's only viable in a win more game. Perhaps you can change the E to just being a better gap closer and/or escape tool? Perhaps add that if you land it it increases magic penetration instead of on hit effects. How about if the target of your E is the same target that you placed your curse on it increases your E's range? That would make a lot more sense. That way your E only has a super powerful effect when you are dedicating to one target and taking the risk to continue with that one target even if the entire enemy team knows that's your target.

Her Q's first cast range could be slightly longer. It's hard enough landing it when it's so narrow. I'm finding myself just barely missing it right now without getting stupidly close where the risk/reward becomes more risk than reward. That means you waste 2 spells for no effect. To complete a charm combo without getting in range of their entire team too early is really tricky as it is. I can only really complete it safely when it's a one on one. Lots of risk for very little reward. It's really rare you well get the full charm effect activated on your intended target. It serves as a warning that you are about to attack that specific target and then their whole team is expecting you to attack that target and be ready for you. Perhaps lower the full charm ready status to a shorter time. For such a stealthy champ she sure does give out a lot of warnings. I really feel like the warnings are too much. Her stealth is what makes her unique and fun to play with. If you water that down, it's like giving us a sword then dulling it. What's the point?

Isn't the trade off that she is squishy drawback enough? Her ult seems OK to me so far. She's a fun champ but if I had to play to win I agree Khazix does what she does better with a much better gap closer and escape.
