I dont understand the top lane

In my 4 or 5 years of playing League of Legends I almost never touched this lane, mainly because I didnt feel attached to 2 bulky bruisers battling it out up there but this season I decided to give it try and made another account to play top and jungle mainly.

Last game I was Irelia top vs Kayle. First thing I did was to draw a game plan in my head, my thougts were like this: Kayle is very weak early and Irelia is good at trading, especially with the passive, so I'm gonna freeze the lane close to my tower and punish her whenever she overextends or throws abilities to CS. Said and done, she started missplaying by autoing the first wave, allowing for a freeze on my side. Close to min 3 I killed her because she was way too overextended and I had my passive stacked. From that point onwards I continued the freeze denying her CS and snowballing my advantage. At min 7 I killed her again because I was lvl 6 and she was still 5 so easy kill with my ulti. Ok up to this point everything is good and it all worked as expected. Problem comes at min 9, where I missed an E and decided to take the trade anyway because I thought my 2 kill lead, lvl lead and item lead would be enough to suffice for that missed ability, but I was wrong and I got killed. At this point Kayle was 1/2 and I was 2/1, for some reason all the lead I had built up to that point just crumbled in an instant, when I came back to lane she was the same lvl as me, she had closed the gap in CS and now she could even smash me in a 1vs1.

Besides that bad trade I took at min 9, I dont understand what I did wrong, its not possible that if you build and advantage for almost 10 minutes straight denying your oponent and mess up once, all that effort you did is gone and worthless and suddenly your enemy that couldnt even walk up to farm up to that point just rolls you out of the lane from that moment onwards.

Welcome to top lane, where every matchup is a clusterfuck and where 1 mistake costs you the entire lane.

Top lane is for putting yourskills pedal to the metal as well as your nerves. :I Also anything works there, until enemy locks in Jax, then it's GG.

so basically you got 2 kills on a late game champion, then inted when she probably had a large wave that you lost to the turret equalizing the lane, how is it surprising that you aren't strong after that anymore? of course it doesn't help that kayle is the most broken top laner right now along with riven but this does sound like you just played badly and don't know how irelia works.

You should have ended the game at minute 8. It is your fault for you not know how to play against her. You deserve to loose....

just play warwick his top lane gameplay consist of step one: start mana crystal step two: try to bite enemy step three: fear then bite step four : chase them down lane step five: profit

bonus steps now step one: ban darius step two: ban darius again step three: ban darius ad nauseam (screw true damage ult that bypasses % reduction defenses) chogath is way more fair at least in this regard at least HE HAS TO AIM his other skill attacks instead of completely nullifying/punishing your ability to fight back.

laning injured: using bite on minions equivalently exchanges mana for hp. recommend using press the attack or conqueror depending on damage need vs burst.

ah, the simplest fix to this is to not select toplane before you enter queue

That's easy. Kayle probably had Teleport so she never missed that much EXP to begin with, especially since early death timers are literally shorter than running to your tower and recalling. Also Riot has been obsessed with reducing snowballing in recent seasons so gaining a meaningful advantage is only possible through playing perfectly continuously, 1 mess up and your advantage crumbles into nothingness unless you're already WAYYY ahead. Also Kayle is a straight up auto attack champion while Irelia is a combo assassin who needs to his her spells. You always need to hit your E if you wish to win a fight, you cannot win a fight without it unless you're - again - WAYYY ahead already. This is also why I hate new Irelia, she requires too much set-up to function well, you literally cannot mess up or fall behind else you're useless.

yea its also the difference between ur jgler and the enemy's jgler to fill the gap.. even if u were behind u should've pinged ur jgler for some assist when behind.. and when u feel everything is lost stick to farming and stay next to turret and group.

the same thing for mid lane tho

I think that's more 'kayle' reason, than top lane actually. She's pretty much what you described. Bad early (1-7'ish minutes), annoyingly good 8+ minutes and then team-sweeper at lvl 16.

You can't really shut her down, cause she just needs 2 items (guinsoo and nashor) to do what others need with 3-4. And any minute passing is in her favour. It's like playing against atomic bomb with a 20'ish minutes fuse.

Kayle booty blasts melees. She doesn't have a weak early except against other ranged bullies and so any small mistake she can right click to death against because even at level 1 she has Jax's passive on steroids.

Have your jg camp lane if you're against Kayle as a non-ranged champion (including things like E max Nasus as "ranged" for the purpose of trading), or just wait until riot nerfs the overpowered piece of shit to actually have a weak early.
