Poppy jungle and support doesn't exist either.

Jeddy0171 votes

Yeah, those range nerfs to her E pretty much killed Poppy Jungle & support.

And the AA reset removal.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Each champion doesn't have to be played in multiple roles, imo. It's not a good thing, but it's not really a bad thing, either.

On a semi-related note, am I the only one that thinks it's odd that the boards seem to have a raging boner for Shyv, even though she was a pretty heavy abuser of the same sort of things Yi and Co. were, and often stomped games the same way they did? idk, might just be my skewed perspective :/

PapaGreg213 votes

Most everyone on the boards agreed she was too strong as well as most other users of devourer and that her nerfs were justified. However her kit is so heavily reliant on devourer (unlike Jax, Yi, Xin, etc) that once it is gone she does not have any great alternative build paths.

Ackelope1 votes

Why can't she build the new Guinsoo's once it's out to still get the double hit? Is it not so great on her? idk too much about her tbh, so if you do, I'd appreciate a little more explanation.

PapaGreg211 votes

She can build it but it is very expensive and she doesn't utilize AP like a lot of the other champs that need it so it is not ideal. Plus unlike somebody like Yi, she needs tanky items to be relevant too.

Well its not true to say that she doesn't utilize ap because her e and ultimate have ap scalings, but i will agree its probably too expensive and ap isn't that great of a stat on shyv, so yea shyv is going to suck balls in 6.9

PapaGreg211 votes

I apologize. I knew she used AP but was trying to say that she doesn't use it "As much" as other champs that can build it (like Jax, irelia, etc.) You are correct though.

Shyvana is just really lacking at her job. In order for Shyvana to be strong without devouer, she needs to be overpowered with it.

Yi has two forms of damage mitigation in his untargetibility and meditation. He has a gap closer and soft CC immunity.

Jax has 2 as well, along with a hard CC and gap closer.

Xin again, has 2 forms of damage mitigation as well as 2 forms of hard CC, soft CC and a gap closer.

All three have attack speed steroids as well.

Shyvana on the other hand, has one mitigation which is pure stats so it can be penetrated.

She has an unreliable CC tied to an ult which is also a gap closer but again, it's an ult.

She has a speed boost but can be kited rather effectively. And like the others, she relies on attack speed but unlike them, has no AS steroid.

In fact, I'd say that when Shyvana was a serious pick without devourer, it was because she was overpowered.

She'll hopefully get some attention with the Diver update.

This. As someone who doesn't play her, I'm glad to see her stats in the gutter... Because of your second to last sentence.

In fact, I'd say that when Shyvana was a serious pick without devourer, it was because she was overpowered.

She needs an update. When she's played, it's because she does too much damage while building mostly tank. It's an essential problem for fighters that Riot still hasn't fixed. They are getting better all the time, but until it's truly solved, I'm happy not to see her picked.

But BEFORE devourer and rito's adventures with "stat binding" and bruiser itemization, she had a place in the meta as a toplaner

"Shyvana top", inb4 Shyvana's anatomy post..... (THOSE WERE THE DAYS , MAN)

But anyway, that's because Shyvana is a terrible top champ, she has always been a terrible top except for rare instances of something being broken. She's not meant to be top, she has zero sustain, awful poke and no gap closer.... Dragon's Descent is also one of the worst individual skills in the game and probably the worst ult now that Radiance has been changed.

Are you new to the game? She use to be an amazing top laner that could fight most matchups.

I destroyed Shyvana with Rumble in S4 and S3 as well.

And keep in mind, the percentage of playrate in a role needed to appear in champion gg is so low, that support kennen is listed.

Man.. when i started playing Shyvana was a top tier pick and i miss the Shyvana vs Renekton match up.. was always an interesting one :)

Rageblade changes and bloodrazor can't come fast enough! Hopefully, she'll work top again, either directly or from comp buffs.

notice me Sin pi1 votes

champs like Shyvana (and MasterYi ) had to be nerfed heavily cuz devourer's too op on them. just wait til devourer gets removed in patch 6.9 (and rebalanced at 6.10 most likely) and i think Shyvana top lane would be back in meta

Karma Deified1 votes

Probably too unreliable.

Shyvana Elise DrMundo

See these. %HP Damage, functional when built tanky.

Ekko Maokai

The top 3 have issues applying their damage among other things.

The bottom 2 can easily make use of their innate power for top lane play without worrying about glaring flaws.

and then bloodrazor comes and no one will play toplane shyv

They nerfed her dueling, so I don't see why you'd pick her top.

Gal....e......o? What is a galeo?

Wenderwall1 votes

If only they do give back the soft CC/ knock up on her ult. And give AS boost with her W as well. 2 small buffs and she'll be back to god tier.

I build her full hp tank + item 3748 +grasp of undying (2.5% max hp lifesteal is op) as jg. I used to go devour + AS items but would die with just 1 CC and it takes so long for Guinsoo to get stacked. Being tanky helps team, no need to be AFK, jump into team fight and thx to lifesteal get 1 kill and fly away.

PapaGreg211 votes

I usually go fervor of battle but do the same build as you. I might try grasp as I really enjoy it on Nasus when I play him. I usually never build guinsoo because I just don't like it for my playstyle.

Sometimes if I have 2 tanks on the team I will go cowsep's build of infinity edge and phantom dancer and just be a crit monster with auto and q which is incredibly effective if you are going to be split pushing and dueling more than team fighting.

The fun thing about Shyvana is that she can really be built many different ways and be effective without being broken strong. That is why devourer getting removed will be nice so maybe she'll get her q nerf reverted and help bring her into top lane again.

Wenderwall1 votes

I used to do the same. But then full tank ( 4KHP) with item 1401 +item 3748 +item 3742 gives lot of hp and 2.5% of lifesteal is >100hp.. It gives enough sustenance over fervor. Since I'l going tanky, there aren't any AS items. ( 6th item can be that but that's too late in game).

If there are 2 tanks, I just take Yi instead of Shyvana.

I'm waiting for 6.9 to try few of the hybrid combinations. She does pretty good Magic Damage too, so plenty of build paths. Now if only she gets CC ability.

PapaGreg211 votes

Even though she does a lot of magic damage, I don't think AP really benefits her because burnout is built on AD but applies AP. You would probably be better off using magic penetration items than Guinsoos or Hextech, though Guinsoo's passive seems pretty strong.

I would take Yi as well but sometimes I am first pick and I don't get to read the table before picking my card.

Wenderwall1 votes

I still need to figure out a stable/consistent build. Most builds I did are either early game or late game. Couldn't find something which won't fall off late game.

  • Full tank is totally dependent on team. As late game everyone has 6 items and her damage falls off.
  • Bruiser build - she lacks burst damage so i have trouble using it in late game. Early game is awesome.
  • AS build - Pretty good.. but with 6.9 patch her AS build won't as good as before.
Raiku Kawisa1 votes

Ya... there is no reason to play Shyv Top when Devourer is jungle only and simply taking smite TP won't help get it.

I would be interested to see how Top Shyvana fares when the Devour effect is moved to Rageblade.

Quepha1 votes

Good.

Shyvana's play pattern is too simple to be allowed to be viable in lane because top lane when Shyvana was strong was not a fun time.

PapaGreg211 votes

I don't with that particular argument. Garen, Mundo, Nasus and Tryndamere are all mechanically simple and are in a pretty good state in top lane.

"Mechanically simple" and "simple play pattern" are not the same thing. Shyvana depends on getting into auto range and auto attacking with no way for her to get into auto range before 6 and no way for the enemy to get out of her auto range ever. Her lane phase is nothing but a stat check and her major power spike is due to levels so the only way for her to be viable in top lane is for her to be balanced around not losing those stat checks against other melee champs until she hits 6 and gets in melee range, stays in melee range, and wins.

Garen depends on abilities more than auto attacks for damage, so he has windows of power and weakness, his passive gives him enough sustain to survive bad matchups, but that involves counterplay where a little bit of harass to keep his passive down goes a long way, and Garen getting into melee range is never a guaranteed thing.

Mundo also has no gap closers, he has to land a skillshot for most of his damage and to catch up to opponents, he has to let his health skim dangerously close to death to maximize his ult, and he also has sustain that lets him be balanced around surviving a lane in some way other than simply being too strong to be killed.

Nasus also can't reliably get into melee range ever, and he depends on being able to farm in order to get his damage, so the enemy being able to zone him away from minions but not experience is still impactful.

Tryndamere builds squishy so he is always at risk of being killed if he messes up a cooldown or misjudges the jungler's position, and like Nasus he needs to cs to scale into a threat.

Shyvana's problem is not that she's easy to play, but that she presents no options when playing against her.
