Lux needs nerfs, unpopular opinion

trash sion··11 votes·1,063 views

EDIT: Downvotes expected given that statistically, probably half of you have played as Lux in the last 10 games or so. Abuse it until it's fixed I guess.

I get it, she's a fan favorite and super popular and fun to play. But she has the highest playrate, still a 51+% winrate, and has almost always been that way. Can she be bad for once? Her damage is way too reliable for it to be as high as it is. Hitting one ability guarantees the rest of her kit, whether it be W or Q that she hits. Lategame, she doesn't even need to use half her kit to oneshot you, plus it's AoE. Really unfun to play against, considering that it's almost every game.

high pick rate and a good win rate aren't valid reasons for a nerf if it doesn't go together with a high ban rate. usually it just signifies a safe pick, i.e. a champion which is not feast or famine and which is decent but not very strong

lux has a few problems and mainly the lack of cc (also a bad wave clear)

Lux has a snare and Slow. Paired with ludens, her wave clear is super good

Lux has a snare and Slow. Paired with ludens, her wave clear is super good

a weak snare and a very situational slow (usually only good when you are fleeing) when most of mid mages bring some kind of stun/suppression/taunt etc, it's one of the key points of their tool kit

when lux has morello and ludens (and she gets morello the first) she is way past the point when she needs to have a good wave clear... and she still needs the passive from ludens for it

Weak? I wasn't aware a standard-length snare with decent base damage and scaling was "weak," especially when it can hit two targets and has a long range. Also, that slow isn't situational. It allows for repositioning, an easier landing of Q, and an easier Ulti if Q is down. Like, what?

yeah, it's a relatively weak snare. compare its length to morgana's dark binding light binding is somehow easier to land though

Weak snare? Her snare has very long range, last a long time, and can hit multiple people. There is really nothing weak about her Q.

roots for 1 sec less than morg's when maxed much weaker hitting than morg's (250 + 70% ap vs 300 + 90% ap maxed) till it's maxed it has a longer cd than morg's and when it's maxed it has the same cd

Her waveclear is good, which is also why she has the highest non-ultimate mana cost - hell, it's even higher than most ultimates.

That being said, it cannot even clear casters unless you're a bit ahead (eg Double Dorans and 4+ stacks in Dark Seal before ~12 mins.) If she's ulting the minion wave early/midgame, her burst potential is zero and 80 seconds is a fair sized window.

I'd argue that a lower banrate allows for a larger sample size when looking at winrate statistics. A higher banrate could lead to a greater disparity between the number of games played by mains and the number of games played by noobs on the champion, which could skew the winrate.

I think her banrate would be higher, but so many people enjoying playing AS or WITH her that she often isn't banned.

Agreed. If she's so strong that she can waste her ultimate to clear waves or zone, and still be able to oneshot without fear of being caught without Ulti, there's a problem. Either force her to manage it better, or lower the damage to make it less of a catch-all ability.

Surfer Ashe2 votes

Except Talon had point and click blink to guarantee his ultimate to almost always kill you vs Lux having to land a minion-blocking slow moving bind and has low 100-0 potential without ignite or proc'ing her passive thrice.

That's a stupid argument.

Talon, both old and current, can hit 6 and have incredibly binary outcome - he jumps on you and bursts you or he dies. There is no missing, no dodging, nothing you can do about it.

Lux "just sitting back" still had to land her kit. Her E can be outplayed by generally moving foward (average lux aim slghtly behind you expecting you to run) and she has to get in her auto range to do any meaningful damage/proc TLD.

By also not dancing in the minion wave, she now has to choose to spend a ridiculous mana to either harass you or farm.

Her Q is slow and juked easily and her ultimate is a non-factor if you avoid the Q.

Also, Talon's ultimate CD isn't the best point of reference since it's only ~20 seconds longer at max rank and he favors CDR too. It's basically up every time he's back in lane too.

I remember when the mage mains on this board were crying when she got the nerfs she deserved. Now she needs more nerfs, but we know that's not gonna happen any time soon

trash sion3 votes

She's too popular and makes rito too much money.

Surfer Ashe3 votes

You do realize her W is her shield, right? You can't hit an enemy with it "guarantee the redt of her kit hits"

trash sion3 votes

E, my bad. I don't play the blonde bitch so...

SGT Dingle Berry3 votes

You're definitely getting some hate here but I agree, both as someone who plays her from time to time and plays against her constantly. Her ult CD is waaaay to low and post 6 in lane getting caught out once usually means your death. Her E is also annoying AF, super annoying zone tool that snares you hard enough to land a Q and or R. All around though I think adding 30 seconds to her ult would be sufficient, they did it to Ziggs and his level 1 ult was garbage.

P.S people will continue to argue but then they'll log into the game and get mejai's or dark seal ^_^

LAKIGR1 votes

the only reason that her ult cd is so low is because generally lux get 45% cdr which is why she can spam it. really there is nothing wrong with right now, with most burst mages if you get caught out or dead how is lux any different to say syndra

As I main Lux, I may have some bias towards what I'll discuss but nonetheless here's my input.

I honestly don't believe Lux is deserving of a nerf. Her kit functions relatively simply and thus doesn't require a large amount of mechanical skill to utilise effectively. This is also why her win-rate tends to hover around the 50-51% mark; because she's a safe pick when played in the right hands. Sure, she's popular now, but that can be attributed to the release of her Ultimate Skin. Her wave-clear early-mid is actually quite subpar and that's because she's reliant early-mid on proccing her passive in order to actually kill anything (since E's damage actually cannot one shot the wave), which, as requiring an auto attack to proc takes much longer to clear when compared to the likes of Viktor. In addition, wave-clearing with E, though her most effective option is quite mana costly and is not as 'free' as many may describe. Her ultimate offers nothing but vision and damage in a singular, thin and well-telegraphed line and her kit is based around it. It procs and then reapplies her passive and provides the brunt of her damage; her q and e functioning more-so as softeners and appliers of her passive than anything. Her w is hardly as great as it once was, and functions really only as a shield to counteract poke upon engaging. Late game, Lux functions as a burst mage - because she is one. Her landing her q on you is reason enough to warrant a kill. Not to mention, the only people she will ever burst - even late game - are the ADC and the squishy midlane mage/assassin. The counterplay to lategame Lux is literally, watch for her q and jump on her face. In teamfights, she'll throw her e for damage and w for sustain out waiting for a possible pick on the ADC who is close enough and not paying enough attention to be snared by her q. The only time she will ultimate during a teamfight is for a 3-5 man Ultimate (which MUST include at least the adc or squishy mid-laner or otherwise tanks/bruisers laugh at her) or if she has a pick on a fed/squishy enemy champion. That in itself is more of a positioning issue for your team than anything. Though she has the range advantage most of the time, Lux cannot deal with anyone up in her face. Any diver or form of cc that enables your team to collapse on her will pop her like a balloon. Trust me. She's immobile and reliant on her skills. If you dodge her q and are in range to attack her, she will die.

Finally, itemisation against her is incredibly efficient anyway. item 3157 Completely negates her combo if you get caught out by a Q. item 3156 Will allow you to live through her burst. item 3139 Did you Q me? Nope. Not to mention item 3102 or item 3814 which turn any engage in your favour as she loses 1 out of the 3 of her damaging abilities.

TLDR: She functions as an immobile burst mage with small areas of utility; she is not overtuned.

However, I'm up for discussion if there's specifically anything that genuinely bothers you that doesn't fall in line with her "omg she burst tf out of me" identity.

"Jumping on her face" is easier said than done with that range. In reality, only bruisers and tanks have a chance of reaching her in teamfights, as most assassins are going to be aiming for that Jinx or Caitlyn, all while the support is doing their annoying support stuff.

Been playing against Lux on Howling Abyss for the past couple weeks now and I hate how I HAVE to lock in a tank in order to have a chance of shutting her down, and even then it's not a cakewalk. Also hate how her ult can't be interrupted by hard CC.

Leo10242 votes

Her ult could use a longer cooldown but aside from that, her damage is normal for a mage

trash sion2 votes

i'm not saying the damage alone is overboard, but combined with how it's impossible to avoid after hitting one spell, the fact that it's AoE, and that it is very forgiving with cooldowns is what makes it irritating.

Hitting one ability guarantees the rest of her kit, whether it be W or Q that she hits.

firstly no, hitting e doesn't guarantee hitting q in any way, in most of the cases secondly, it's like with literally any mage, it's how they work, they cc you and then they run their full combo into you at least when lux cc you, you can cc her back preventing the full combo (i regularly do it laning ahri vs lux, she binds me and i make her love me and not hurt me :3) unlike when, say, syndra stuns you q is that easy to avoid for a reason, avoid it

Lux is popular right now cause of th enew skin. Her wave clear is one of the worst ,specially after minion changes.Doesnt matter how much ap you have ,you cant clean back line with a single E.You can even rush a deathcap ,you still cant do it.And thats the main reason shes not played in high elo alot. She also has one of the highest cd out of all mages,is just eveyone builds max cdr on her.I mean you have to ,or you gonna be usless.

Surfer Ashe2 votes

You can kill caster minions with 2x Doran and a 4-6 stacks on Dark seal if meet those conditions before ~12 mins, no passive pro required.

Lovelle2 votes

You know nothing about being behind and useless. Try playing one of the unpopular marksmen right now, then you will know the meaning of having no impact until 30 minutes into the game. All of that mage, support, and popular marksman spamming has spoiled you. It has alienated you from the truth of this game's lack of balance.

Lux always has the ability to make plays, at every stage of the game. She's only gated by player skill and her inability to destroy structures quickly.
