So... why are Illaoi's Quotes Global?
'Cause I see no reason her native tongue can be heard globally.
Now, before anybody gets angry at this because Riot refuses to make Karthus' R quotes global, keep this in mind: While in English they're short, Karthus' R quotes can be rather long-winded in other languages. I quote RiotC3Sound:
There are a couple reasons we have been hesitant to do this. Global SFX have their place. We try only to use global SFX when absolutely necessary, and even Sion was pushing the envelope. Global VO is an almost totally different issue, as its not just English that we have to take into consideration. There are languages that are much longer than English, and while it might be fine for english... it might not be for others.
Seb also posted on this awhile back - posted in the comments of this thread as well. His reply was: "We also saw some requests for global VO on Requiem; the main issue there is that Karthus’ R lines are pretty dang long so as to match the channel time, and long global VO could turn annoying very quickly when you’re hearing it (not to mention dying to it) every couple minutes. We definitely liked the idea though, so we added a global, evil laugh to Requiem that’ll crank up the feeling of impending doom no matter where your enemies are on the map."
Outside of the potential "annoying" element, We have been very wary to set global dialog phrases (outside of the Nocturne one-word Ult line and Kalistas bind - and a lot of people think Kalista's global dialog is a bug).
I can live with that explanation. If Karthus' R quotes are too cumbersome in other languages, I can live with that. Illaoi's native tongue isn't quite in the same boat. It doesn't need to be translated into different languages since you're not meant to understand it. I can live with that.
But why make Illaoi's native language global anyway? Even Kalista's global R quotes perplex me to no end. Her ultimate is a localized effect; it's not like Sion or Rek'Sai crossing halfway across the map in a few seconds. Why must I hear it at top lane, other than say, "HEY, PAY ATTENTION TO BOT LANE! PLAYS ARE BEING MADE". Using the same logic, Blitzcrank's pull or Darius' Q should make global sounds; oh wait, it'd be super annoying. But at least Kalista's R has some bearing on gameplay, unlike Illaoi's global quotes. They pointlessly fill the airspace at seemingly random intervals, the airspace Riot supposedly wants to keep clear.
Riot, if you're citing annoyance as a key concern for constant global sounds, don't make pointless global sounds like Illaoi's quotes.
needs global taunts.
