According to Riot, they believe the game has lots of variety

At least that's what they say in the preseason gameplay goals:

"Two of League’s greatest strengths are variety and mastery. Variety is one of the true foundations of LoL, where the huge roster of champions creates 824 trillion unique possible matchups—and that’s before runes, items, or Summoner Spells."

I would laugh if I wasn't so disappointed in Riot.

Yeah, that's a load of bullshit. Hard to believe that when the same 30-40 characters keep getting played and they are all forced to build the same thing or suffer from being suboptimal when item and character disparity is as severe as it is right now.

I refuse to believe they believe this. Only an idiot would actually think this is true. I'm more inclined to believe they're just saying that so they can save face and have something to say in preparation for preseason. How can someone that's so out of touch with their own game expect to be able to balance it properly?

That is every game ever though, there will be variety but there will always be a best thing and strat.

Fighting games, the amount of combos you can do is near endless, but there are always going to be an optimal combo.

Mtg has that right now with the best decks being field of dead and oko decks.

It isn’t possible to have this much variety and not have things rise to the top.

They didn't say variety for who tho.

Casuals have more variety than hardcore players.

Half the players in a game are obviously going to be some of the most popular champs. But there's always a few uncommon picks in every game. There's plenty of variety.

Just like how there's always going to be one optimal build because that's what "optimal" means but that doesn't mean champs don't have the ability to build different things
