Some of the most OP champions also seem to be the best in the 3 phases of the game
Every time a new champion comes into meta, they usually tend to be strong in most of the 3 phases of the game. If you don't know the 3 phases of the game, they are:
early, mid and late game.
These 3 phases determine the parts of the game, early being the most important currently. Never has a champion that is considered 'OP' was ever particularly bad in any phase of the game. They usually have a insanely dominate phase where maybe 2 champions can beat them, or they are simply good all around.
, a considerably strong top lane champion currently, is a late game monster that can split push and assassinate anyone that comes in her way. This would be fine, if her early game was garbage. She has the escape tools and high base health regeneration to keep her early game viable despite her late game being strong as well. This means she has no weak point in the game where her enemies can dominate her. Champions like
in top lane can dominate late game just the same, however, in the early game they are forced to farm vigorously in order to get to that late game that they really thrive on. This is balanced because there are clear weak points and clear strong points that can easily be exploited by the enemy.
Most champions that have relatively good phases all around often fester into generalist champions. Champions previously, like
and
had extremely large play rates, while also boasting good win rates. Learning this, I realized that champions that are too strong all have a common issue, they provide too much to the team. Whether it be too many things or too much of one, champions that provide enough utility, damage, mobility and all in between usually stand at the top.
So, how can Riot fix this issue? Honestly, they need to keep watch of every champion of League of Legends. Champions that provide too much, but may not be viable due to another counter providing more could become dominant if said champion is buffed, or if opposing champion is nerfed. There are many factors that can chip in on whether a champion is op or not. Hell, last season out of nowhere tank
became dominant, removing all top lane champions from the meta. Things like this need to be kept on watch, and Riot needs to make sure all champions have a clear weak phase and a clear strong phase.
