I think balancing should come above all else, honestly. Obviously yes, identities should be kept intact wherever possible but that shouldn't make them under or overpowered. After all, there's no sense in having an identity if you're never picked or always banned.

Good game design is all about balance.

Take Aatrox as an example. Both of his iterations have been nightmares to balance. IMO he's never had a true identity that should have been kept because they both impacted the game too negatively.

explain a identity champ associated that shouldnt be taken away or altered in (mostly) any way because it would destroy said champ. it would help clarify the message your sending.

I think Vayne would probably be one of the strongest examples of an "identity" based champion. She was designed to be a tankbusting ADC, take away her true damage and just can't do that anymore.

However, taking away someone's "identity" can also be a good thing. For example, Shen has been in a pretty abysmal spot since his rework, removing his most iconic and problematic ability (his ultimate) could open him up to more varied and healthier balancing decisions.

prework shen vs rework shen what changed him?

  • Many people think he became much more awkward to play (his Spirit Blade feels more like an ankle weight than an actual tool)

  • Pre-rework Shen didn't have to deal with tower plating which hits him really hard. If Shen hits a good ult, saves someone, and gets a kill, he still loses a trade against his toplaner since they're getting solo EXP, tower plating gold, and CS gold.

  • Pre-rework Shen was a lot simpler to play (which was both a good and bad thing) so adding more mechanics to his kit while keeping the same "strength" level makes him feel a lot less rewarding

  • A lot of Shen's counters are strong, are receiving buffs, or have received buffs such as Mordekaiser, Illaoi, and Riven.

  • Teleport nerfs hit him fairly hard

  • For a long time Shen was constantly getting nerfed because of pro play, he recently received one of his first buffs to help him CS under tower.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Shen has so many problems as is and his ultimate is holding him back even further.

Because his ultimate is iconic, popular, and strong (in coordinated play) they left it in which hurt the other parts of his kit. Stack that with the other general nerfs (tower plating, teleport nerfs) and that's why Shen has had a horribly low playrate and weaker winrate for most of his (rework's) existence.

Even now, after a few years he's only just starting to rise above a 50% winrate, but he's still got a low playrate and his winrate for the last few patches has been anywhere from a 46% to 49%.

Every mechanics consumes part of the power budget. Give a champ too many or too strong, then there isnt budget left for anything else. This is where the nerfs come in. Normally in the form of damage, mana costs, base stats, or cooldowns as the mechanics are simply consuming too much of the budget. Having both just leads to the champion being broken OP like launch Camille. After failing so many times to reign a champ in, you have to reassess whether keeping all the mechanics is worth sacrificing the ability to properly balance the champion. You can only shave so many numbers off before the champ just feels like shit. Thats when mechanics start getting chopped because they because complete balancing nightmares with very limited levers to work with. Removing a mechanic here and there frees up room in the budget and gives you more options

whats this invisible power budget and how is it managed? and please explain how does power budget effect effect champions like odd cases like ekko who has passive and a active in every ability? its weird to me 0_o

Yea, they killed enough champions that they clearly want balance over identities

But then they also do the exact opposite and keep cancer champs like akali or irelia and make them even worse after the rework

no need to be biased here. just explain what you mean.
