AP Varus you go Rageblade into Nashors/Wit's End as your core. From there I've always just gotten sorc shoes and dethcap.
I'd go Rage, Nash, Gun, DeathCap
Probably Rageblade. Most synergy with your w and gives a lot of popping power
I remember talking with a small group of Varus mains on Discord once, and if memory serves they said his typical AP build was > > > and used to finish with 
but it shares its passive with Rageblade now.
I remember it being nashors into rageblade
