It IS Alright to Give up Lane in Bad Matchups

One thing I see a lot of people doing in the rank that I'm at and while leveling my second account (and yes, I do this too, and I know it's a mistake that I need to fix) is playing overly aggressive when they're behind. They try to go for kills or farm when they really shouldn't, and they usually end up feeding hard because of it. If you need to, it is alright to step back and let your opponent push you into turret and farm there instead of playing up, playing like you have a lead. Basically, you need to measure cost vs gain. Can your lane opponent kill you if you go for some harass here?

Times when you should concede that you lost, not draw attention to yourself, and just take all the gold you can get under turret:

1: You're in a bad matchup. One thing Riot has been pushing with a lot of newer champions/reworks is minimizing the effects of counter picks. Basically, making it so that if you're skilled enough, there is never any single champion who can make you completely useless. They've been trying to make this more prevalent with newer champions and reworks, but counters will always exist. If you're countered and you don't know how to play against it properly, don't get within range of your opponent. Just sit back, relax, and try to get all the farm you can.

2: Your opponent got an early kill or 2 on you. If your opponent is ahead by a significant enough margin, it's always better to just sit back, farm, and not let them get more fed. They will have a lead on you, and they will be able to kill you, so know your limits and back off.

3: You don't know the matchup very well. This is one where it's a bit more controversial. If you don't know the matchup and you're in normals, I would actually suggest more aggression. It will help you to learn your limits. If you know what your opponent does, it could be much better to try to figure out how you can stop them. However, in ranked, if you don't know the matchup well enough to know that you can win, I would suggest backing off and playing safe. The risk/reward here could be worth it if you know how to play the matchup, but if you don't, it's not worth losing the game.

4: You're playing a late game champion with a weak early game. Some champions are naturally stronger in late game teamfight scenarios than in lane. It's not a bad thing to give up your lane because you scale better. Your opponent can take the small cs lead in the lane, but you'll be stronger in teamfights if you don't feed them.

5: You're tilted. This happens to all of us. You get behind, start to lose your lane, and get worried that you will lose the game, so you play poorly. Keep a level head and keep back so you don't feed worse. You will lose the game if you let your tilt get to you too badly.

I've won quite a few matchups before due to this, notoriously with Fiora. I had one instance, Vs a Renekton that got a good early gank on me, where I started farming under tower and the inability to dive me safely tilted my opponent enough to get me back ahead (he started diving turret, coaxed jg into ganking me under turret. Both fights I won, got my lead back, and ended up split-pushing for gg.
