@Riot Another idea for sightstone

Alright, so there is a lot of discussions lately about changes for the famous vision item item 2049 and its less than desirable upgrade item 2045.

One of the things that makes Sightstone a problem is that it gives health, which is not really wanted for AP supports, which would prefer some quick AP for the laning phase. Well, I've got a possible solution that could make every support happy:

> item 1028 + item 1052 + 0 = item 2049 > Then, gives sightstone 20 AP.

This is surely a pure buff since it gives a lot more for approximately the same cost. However... The total cost becomes 835 but offers equally good path for both tanky and AP supports. Sona can now buy item 1052 if she doesn't have enough gold for the complete item while Leona takes item 1028. And in the end, AP supports still get tankier and tank supports will do just a bit more damage.

Then comes the problem of the upgrade. Here is how I figure it: purely vision-related enchantments that also double the stats (300 HP and 40 AP). Then again, you get: >item 2049 + item 1028 + item 1052 + 0 = item 2045 (with different possible enchantments)

There are many possibilities to explore for vision enhancements:

  • Increase ward limit
  • Increase ward duration
  • Increase ward vision range
  • Air wards that see through terrain and brush
  • Patrolling wards (like Kalista's sentinel)
  • Etc...

To avoid the upgrade being absolutely mandatory, there is also the possibility to allow the purchase once you hit level 9, as you did for trinkets. Enchantments like these makes the item more unique and more focused on what it's supposed to do: give small stats and deepen the vision game.

These build paths make every step of the purchase feel better. By deleting the combine cost you never get in the situation where you buy something that doesn't feel useful. You either buy useful stats (HP or AP) or a finished sightstone/enchantment with not-so-needed-but-still-nice stats. Plus, it still never takes more than one slot for sightstone and two slots for ruby sighstone. Even though the sightstone gets a pretty big buff, since the stats themselves still aren't great for an item slot, I believe Sightstone will stay a pure support (and maybe sometimes jungler, albeit not more than currently) item which is something I think you wanted to preserve.

TL;DR: Ruby + Tome gives Sightstone with 20 AP. Enchantments upgrades double the stats and gives vision related bonuses. Better build path for AP supports, better ruby upgrade overall and more complexity for the vision game.

I have always like the idea (If NOTHING else) of having Ruby Sightstone allow for one more ward to be placed by the owner. (4 instead of 3 plus 1 pink.)

Would also be cool if you could "Activate the item" to switch between green wards and pink wards.

I like the "toggle to pink" too, but how do you toggle it?

same way you toggle Muramana on and off. You click it or press the item button.

EDIT Doh :P I see what you did there (what I did there..?) good point.

Have an icon somewhere you can click. Maybe above your status or something.

Or maybe just have the last one be a pink.

There we go, if Ruby sightstone increased max wards to 4 (instead of 3) and gave you 5 charges, the last charge could be a pink ward. That way if gives you your max ward capacity each time you back.

That could be a solution, but the fact that you can't decide exactly when you place a pink can be annoying.

Very true, but it would still be better than nothing. And it probably wouldnt be too big of a headache as long as you were actively warding.

Sure, but I already see the moment when you want to place a pink and your last ward ends right before you press the button and you end up placing a green ward.^^

I would rather see sightstone automatically upgrade to ruby sightstone at XX minutes or level X, whichever comes first.

Or, if we must upgrade it for a cost, at least give us 6 or 7 charges.

I don't think it really needs any AP or extra effects.

6 or 7 charges mean little when you can only place 3. I mean, yeah, you can insta negate sweepers, but thats not a good reason for that many charges. Since you can do that anyway with 3 charges.

How can you do that with 3 charges? I find myself having to go back to base often just to recharge my sightstone, and if it's late in the game, I really don't want to waste time doing that.

Well, since it takes an item slot, I think that a bit more power wouldn't hurt supports, who already have trouble getting nice stats.
