Can a Rioter explain why we're forced to sit through 3/4v5 normal games for 20 minutes?

It's been five fucking seasons and you still haven't done anything about this. What are you even spending your time on? I can't even remember the last major non-champion/balance update.

Unless this thread got 1000 upvotes Riot isn't going to say shit about the issues with afks during ranked and so on. Its so sad but I have just gotten used to them not caring. And even if they did post it would probably be "soon™"

I don't blame them for ignoring posts when so many of them are filled with negativity, even if some of them do have valid points.

I wish people had more common sense like this.

If somebody approaches you with questions, are you more likely to respond to them if they're...

A. Swearing and questioning your methods? or... B. Professional and polite while offering alternatives?

I'd go with the latter, because if they're doing the former, they're less likely to listen to anything that is not immediately gratifying so why even bother putting in the effort? I'd rather respond to the people who will appreciate my response and will listen to reasoning rather than only looking for an immediate solution and being insulting in the process.

Food for thought.

Would also love to hear some input from Riot on this. There are solutions.

TheStevenWu9 votes

Solution:

Have a vote system (solo queue only). Please keep in mind that the only reason why a system should be in place is because sometimes shit happens that is out of the control of the players (all the players; not just a single or few players your spoiled brats).

Conditions:

  1. Only team AFK'er(s) with vote system can vote.
  2. Votes must be unanimous to take effect. A single "No" vote will cancel voting for 2 minutes.
  3. Initiator of a failed vote cannot initiate any additional votes for the entire game.
  4. Voting process will last 3 minutes before results (to accommodate sudden restroom urges, answering the phone, greeting the door).
  5. Vote available only before the 20 minutes mark.

Mechanics

  1. Active members of team with the AFK will begin a vote to end game.
  2. Voting requires the team to unanimously pick the AFK'er(s). AFK'er(s) will be notifified
  3. If all active members vote yes and the identified AFK'er(s) do not respond (moving, typing, voting, etc.), the game will end in draw; otherwise the game will continue to play

Impacts:

  1. No LP gains will be awarded to either team.
  2. IP/Exp will calculate as normal.
  3. If ranked, all AFK'er(s) will lose ~60-80 LP. If the AFK'er does not have sufficient LP, he will be demoted. If the AFK'er is in a promotion series, he will end the series and lose LP as if he was at 99 LP.
  4. AFK'er(s) automatically receive 9 counts of "leaving/afk" reports sent to Riot.

Why this system works:

  1. No abuse. No one is going to willingly take the blame and lose most of their LP or get demoted to prevent a loss for a friend. It's more beneficial to simply suffer your normal LP loss.
  2. "Winning" team will have less complaints as the game is before the 20 minutes mark and little investments have been made. (Think of it as an extended queue dodge). This system also hopes to deter leaving behaviors from happening through heavy punishment; therefore the need to vote should not be a common occurrence.

Questions/Criticisms I know I will get (don't waste your time):

  1. This is not fair to the players who have legit excuses to leave. 1A. If you have a legit excuse to leave, then you wouldn't be caring about your rank/status in a video game. If you can still worry about your LP, it's not a legit excuse.

  2. This is not fair to the players who lost their internet connection. 2A. It is your responsibility to test if your internet connection is stable enough to play before every game. Internet connection does not just go out suddenly unless there's some major catastrophe in your area (in which case, see 1A). If you decided to play through lag and ruin everyone else's experience, you deserved punishment.

  3. What about trolls that just sit there and move every few minutes to prevent voting from taking effect? 3A. Tough luck. Make sure to report the players and persuade everyone else to do so as well so he get's permabanned. This isn't a system issue; it's a community issue, and we are the ones who build this community. Not reporting a player is the same as encouraging that player to continue his behavior. If you do not report, you are partially to blame.

  4. What if there was a sudden power outage? 4A. Most cases the power comes back on fairly quick. Log back into your game and stop the voting. If you cannot do so, tough luck. Life isn't always fair, and plus - the chance of this happening is very low to make any real impact in the long run (pro's outweigh con's).

  5. My computer crashed! Its not my fault! 5A. It is most definitely your fault for playing on a shitty computer that cannot run league. If your computer isn't stable enough to play league, you shouldn't play it as it ruins everyone else's experience. If you want to play so badly, buy a new computer. If you can afford to play league, you can afford a new computer. If you're a brat and your parents don't want you playing video games, you shouldn't be playing video games.

  6. People have jobs and lives to take care of. Sometimes unexpected issues come up for work and stuff. 6A. If you can't guarantee an hour window to play league, you shouldn't start a Summoner's Rift game. I feel zero sympathy for you. Otherwise, see 1A.

  7. I'm on the winning team and want my free win! 7A. Since you are an inconsiderate little brat who is too lazy to actually earn your rewards, two words: fuck you!

  8. What about after the 20 minutes mark? 8A. It's called "/ff" and "/surrender". But that's not fair? We have to have a middle-ground here. Either we have no system (currently), or we have a system that works for the most part but have a few flaws here and there. The goal of the system is so we do not have to waste 20 minutes of our lives before surrendering. The goal of the system is NOT to prevent LP loss.

Robert Smith2 votes

Let me start off that I like your system. Riot (unlike you) actually seems to have sympathy for toxic player on the hopes that they will reform which is why a low que or toxic island queue does not exist because it doesn't teach them anything. Although I'm tired of toxic and trolling players I feel as though Riot would never take a harsh approach to players in this way.

Someone finally fucking gets it. There is no excuse to AFK. If you crash or lag out, it's your own fault and you shouldn't have been risking everyone else's experience playing Ranked with shit internet or a toaster oven. Loss prevented needs to be a thing, and afk's need to be punished HARSHLY. This accomplishes both.

#1, 2, 4: They all fall under the "Life isn't always fair" context. The valid reasoning behind this is briefly explained in #4. The chances of these events happening is significant smaller than the issue at hand (someone else leaving the game for unwarranted reasons). The benefit of having a "loss forgiven" outcome when needed will (hopefully) outweigh the loss endured from the more "extreme" scenarios. It's a form of compromise - you risk losing in some occasions in order to better protect yourself is most others. Don't worry, you won't be banned for disconnecting on rare occasions. I have a "leave" probably once every two months and I've never received punishment. It's kind of like paying for a mediocre insurance plan. By having less insurance cost, you're hoping that these savings will outweigh the costs of a out-of-pocket major accident.

#5: First off, "shitty computer" in this context is defined as a computer that cannot run the game in a stable fashion (presumably on lowest settings). A computer's quality is made up of more than just it's core processors. However, to address your example - the i7 computer that is disconnecting most likely had an issue that is either internet related or hardware damages. If it's internet related, then the topic is irrelevant as we are talking about hardware quality. If it is hardware damage, it is your responsibility to either repair or replace the computer before you play. It is highly unlikely that the a healthy i7 computer (with other standard components) have issues running the game, at least on low settings.

#6: Guaranteeing time to play means that even unexpected work calls can wait until the game is over. If you're in a service industry and was called in because of a spike in business traffic, you are not obligated to work if it's outside your regular schedule. Of course that means you will probably be less likely to get a raise or promotion, but that's your PERSONAL decision. Most people do not work in an industry that requires emergency or immediate response. If you do work in such an industry (eg IT employee, law enforcement, etc), then refer to my answer for #1, 2, 4 (in which case such events are rare). If you work in an industry where such events occur often, you're probably not suited to play League - sorry.

I don't know why the font is coming out weird.

You are correct, as it has happened to me before. However, I would refer you to my 4th point. The chances of this happening is not at all often (for most). I would hope that the pro's of the outcome would outweigh the con's. If however, you do live in area where such events occur often, you should probably not be playing a game that requires stable connection.

RISE Shlack1231 votes

I'm not talking about power outages, but rather simple losses of internet connection due to something out of your control. You don't seem to realize how many things have to go right in order for you to have a connection in the first place. Random losses of internet connection are going to happen.

However, I do wholeheartedly agree with you that people shouldn't play this game if they know their internet connection is slow or unreliable.

I liked what you were saying up until you started talking about how if you have unreliable internet (common), have a bad computer(fairly common), live in an area that has occasional brown-outs, or have a job that on rare occasions requires you to come in without much warning, you shouldn't be playing ranked. Your attitude was very "tough luck go fuck yourself"

Your attitude was very "tough luck go fuck yourself"

I get your point. I really do - but unfortunately that's how life works. In an online game, having consistently bad connection issues is like being a disabled person in real life. No matter how badly a disabled kid loves basketball, he's only going to ruin everyone else's experience if he participates.

You wouldn't call someone cold-hearted or selfish for not wanting to play basketball with a kid in a wheelchair. However, I would argue that a disabled person who forces himself unto others is very selfish. Though it's an unfortunate situation, it is not other people's obligation to have to accommodate or push through your personal issues, even if it's directly your fault.

Likewise, if you have shotty internet, no one is blaming you for not being able to play league. But if you force yourself to play through lag and disconnects anyways, you are personally choosing to negatively affect other people. Therefore, from the perspective of the "other people": tough luck go fuck yourself.

Fortunately, internet connection can be fixed. If you live in a bad area or have a cheap plan, move somewhere else or upgrade your plan. If you're not willing to make these sacrifices, why should others make sacrifices on your behalf.

For things that happen on "rare occasions", like i've mentioned before is a pro vs con thing. If you want a benefit, you must make certain sacrifices. If you want a system that forgives, someone needs to take the punishment for you. the system i wrote up is designed around this concept. You want a loss forgiven because of someone's leave or disconnect? I'll give it you, but if you are ever the cause of such events (whether your fault or not), you will have to pay for it. If you don't like, we can keep the current process where everyone gets punished.

Good Monsin4 votes

Because giving one person the power to ruin a game for four others is somehow better then giving us a system where four people who are being negatively effected by that one person can do something to exit the game without consequence even though they had nothing to do with it.

I feel like Riot is EXTREMELY slow on accomplishing a lot of things. Is this a free game? Sure so I guess you could argue that it doesn't owe us anything, but when it comes to E-sports, it seems to get their full attention. Whether it's the lack of a solution from 4v5's, the lack of East Coast servers (I mean there's been calls for it since at least 2012 and going on 4 years later still nothing), actual solutions to trolls and afks, replay systems, I mean the list goes on for a while.

I do enjoy the game, but the support quite often is just plain bad. And it's not like they're not bringing in a ton of money to fix these issues.

Shadow Puppet1 votes

If you did have the ability to surrender early you might run into some players who have the mentality that feeders should leave so that everyone can avoid playing the next ten minutes. Or the occasional "Here I'm going to afk so we don't have to put up with this". a summoner has disconnected

It might be sorta rare but I bet it will happen. Providing possible incentives to leave the game is risky. This is also why we definitely should not have loss prevented games when teams are uneven.

This may not relate entirely of what this topic is about but i'm kinda fed up with the bronze and silver players coming into low level games. I'm only lvl 22 and my team had to deal with a bronze 2. He was the entirety of the enemy team. Why are they even allowed into our games? Ranked people should be banned from entering un-ranked member's games.
