Is matchmaking horrible because the playerbase has dropped? Or because Riot litterally hates us.

Moonfall Saber··49 votes·15,480 views

There is no logical expanation as to why matchmaking should be this horrible. 1 out of 100 games is matched correctly and I am sick of it. This creates the most toxic enviorment of frustration I have ever seen playing this game ever. EVERY SINGLE GAME IS FRUSTRATING.

Both. The playerbase dropped because riot hates us, and the dev team isn't that good at their jobs.

Kaisha32 votes

Both really.

Its clear its in its match making death spiral. Anyone who's played pvp games for a while knows that as the player base dwindles, you get greater and greater disparities in matchmaking. So that is certainly a factor.

But I'm also pretty certain RIOT hates us.

I don't think they are mutually exclusive.

Looking at the amount you can get same trolls in 3 games behind each other, mean that is true

Former diamond player (Now plat) in my low gold games gang gang.

Kaisha14 votes

In the earlier seasons, when I actually played to win and cared about rank, I was up in diamond/plat, and never saw the same two people in back to back games. There were so many players it was always new on both sides. Now I'm in silver (much more people in silver) and regularly see and play with/against the same players in back to back games...

People are leaving the game en-mass. This season (and season 8) have been a cluster fck. NA is dead, best just to find another game...

But I'm sure the next dev post will be about skins, merch, and maybe a hint of balance

As early as it may be in the season, compared to late last seasons numbers in the ranked ladder, we're sitting at about 46%~ of the players. I don't have anything older than last season though

It's not match making, its the state of the game that creates this feeling like everyone is garbage.

Damage is INSANLEY HIGH, Resistance is low Supports can 2 shot people now. Tanks are not meta because they lack any type of BURST and tank items are just trash. So games are filled with Squishy champs and Bruisers. Games have leaned more towards a "Snowball Effect" rather than actual team fights and come backs, Fights are now a Game of Footies, 1 Mistake and miss position = death because once you get hit you lse 60% hp from 1 skill and either have to commit to fight or run. this means the enemy can now go ham on your team because 5v4 or keep poking down.

This causes "team fights" to be less of a micro intensive fight where people go back n forth fighting it out and more of clicking back n forth hoping to land a skill shot before the enemy does in order to ace the team and just run it down. Retaliation doesnt exsist, if you get CC your dead. the game is no longer what it use to be so now when people die they DIE ALOT because the power spike in lane after 1-2 kills (especially bot were 2 people get the lead instead of one) snowballs outta control because you can 2 shot faster now.

This makes the illusion that everyone is trash, deaths per game have increased and game time decreased there isnt a game any more its URF/ARAM. I remember when ULTS actually had significant CD's now every ult is 30 seconds

This is ALL i want to say, i think you are 100% correct here.

I want add this: Is also true that since they lower the queue timer and the drop of the playerbase, the matchmaking is worse. But the main issue i think is what you say in your very good post.

  • r%%%%%ed abundance of CDR
  • r%%%%%ed abundance of damage
  • mobility creep
  • atrocious itemization
  • atrocious minion blocking after Rito tinkered with it and left it in the current state
  • overloaded new kit champs aka abominations like Zoe, reworked Akali, reworked Irelia, etc.
  • CS bounties that go against League's initial core design
  • RNG Dragons, Baron buff doing too much, beetle favoring duel jungle champs
  • Rune reforged while the old Rune + Mastery system was better and way more balanced.

Add to that the blatant champ favoritism like their SkinSell Boy Yasou, coupled with unwillingness and stubbornness to change/fix/nerf broken stuff like release reworked Akali FOR MONTHS, also release Zoe. **Plus countless more r%%%%%ed design + balance choices. ** (they almost included Positional ranks and they thought it was very good idea worth pursuing; also r%%%%%ed DynamicQ xD).

-- Riot has ran the game into the ground. It's pure no brains deathmatch, almost zero strategy left in it.

Many left in season 8, Riot saw a major decline in both playerbase & profits - that's why they went forward with the extremely aggressive and costly marketing campaign in the last months of 2018 - KDA event, many ads on the net, etc.

I expect in about 2 years another big accumulated decline (over the period) or a big steep one during that time. 2-4, max 5 years till the game is not relevant at all.

Honestly imma pretty avid riot supporter but I gotta take a break from league there is something for real wrong with matchmaking. I feel the mmr of every player has become super skewed due to the multi roles being merged back into one. The game feels unplayable on a competitive level in soloq and with that gone my drive to play is gone.

Rare picture of Mr Riot, conceving new ways to torture the player base :

TBF I think they're just a typical product of the web industry : profit-driven, with a victim-pandering mentality. They'd rather improve existing creations than take the risk to develop their own solutions, like an innovative match-making system. And ban people who don't conform, so you're left with people content with a "team game" where the only solution to win is to solo carry with an overpowered assassin... Claiming it was because "flamers are bad people"

[zombie-brand-clap]

Exactly. There is no doubt Riot is just the Scrooge's cashier now. Every since Tencent it's just fallen through the ground. That bloody company is worse than EA when it comes to pro-fit driven, player hating, low-risk flopping, loot boxing, capitalists.

There is NO innovation anymore. Games are seen as a service, so with that mindset- A service doesn't need to be improved unless the clients do not use it. It's a downright shitshow with video games nowadays. Might as well move on to reallife or play older and less eye destroying games.

Playerbase dropped like a Meteor since 2018 controversies. How bad the runes are, damage and balance team.

sobi9997 votes

The playerbase kept screaming about the damage and then mobility creep but riot just shrugged them off and did the literal opposite. All for the sake of flashy pro play. People kept saying that riot is losing its playerbase and they laughed and said " people are just leaving because they are burned out and will come back".

Now we have come to the point where the side-effects are visible and it is too late for riot to revert. The outcome will be that league will be left with 2 servers.

One for korea and one exclusively for pro's

I had two instances this season where I had a toxic teammate in one game, only to matched AGAINST them in the very next.

This was in all in a span of 1 month and either my MMR is so distinct that the game can't find enough players to match me in or there just isn't enough players playing ranked in general.

It could just be horrible because math is hard, especially when comparing things like how good at a video game you are which can vary a lot day to day and even game to game

flibitydoo4 votes

either the game is really gonna spend 4 minutes finding the least fun people to play with or .....

game is actually dying and people are leaving so only those rotten grapes are left for the matchmaker to pick from

DrippyBrownHole4 votes

There's definitely fewer people playing. People with access to computers with at least mediocre graphics capabilities have access to far better titles of the same and similar genres these days.

ISeeDumbPeople4 votes

Yup... you ignore player feedback and do nothing to improve people eventually just get fed up and not come back. This means loss of money, loss of players, dying game. May take awhile, but Riot has fallen a lot the last couple years especially imo. But hey maybe the new generation can figure out a way to enjoy this... I hesitate to call it a game because it seems like some low grade psychological torture; hence why I can't even click the icon on my desktop these days lol.

Matchmaking in Flex RANK is PURE BULLYING! Constantly matching High elo vs low (or even lowest elo).

http://i63.tinypic.com/2qtl2tf.jpg

(have dozens of screens just like above).

The team from Riot handling Matchmaking is either formed sadistic psychopaths - who made matchmaking this way internationally - aiming to harm the majority of players by placing in them in queues like above - (where they're constantly bullied thus having a horrible experience) - or they're completely unconscious of what they're doing (and how much they're harming the experience of the majority of LoL players). Games like above are lost from champ select - but you only get to see that after you joined the game - so you're forced to endure a game where your team is getting bullied for at least 15 minutes. 😖

BigFBear2 votes

I don't think it's because of dropped player base. If this was the reason they wouldn't shorten queue times so hard. It makes no sense to shorten queue times if you have too less players.

It's just a r%%%%%ed try to catch more casuals and relating to the fast paced chinese players and their dumb internet cafes. Today's generation doesn't want to wait 2 minutes for a game. Everything has to be fast and quick. New game -> shitty quality coinflip match -> don't care ff15 -> and next after 10 seconds queue. And the Fortnite kids are happy. Quality is worth shit nowadays. It's just about quantity.

I had 1:30-1:40 queue times as Plat Jungler EUW all the last seasons. And suddenly in Season 9 my invite times are between 0 and 20 seconds.

I mean, WTF? No wonder that games are unbalanced af.

GayFluffyUnicorn5 votes

Both these things aren't mutually exclusive tho.

Playerbase drops=longer q times but people want shorter q times--->widen the range at which the matchmaker picks players=shitty matchmaking we have there.

so you have less players, wider gap in skill due to that AND also artificially shortened q times.

Look at the opgg of my most recent match and tell me thats balanced matchmaking LOL god I play maybe 2 games a day and I am damn sick of this game, theres that MAYBE 1 decent to very competitive game a week that keeps me somewhat interested but otherwise its stomps one way or the other.

BlackEyesBlue2 votes

Well rito loves to talk about the size of the player base. Take one moment and consider that an increasing number if those are smurfs and new accounts after permanent bans. Also that they don't subtract banned accounts.

And that make a Tyler1 alone worth what? 15 players? Anyone here ever seem Trick play with the same name for more then a few days? That's another 20 or so. Think it's a safe bet there are MANY players like that.

I just posted something about how it takes a lot of games to climb to your actual elo. I've been stuck around plat 3 since season 4, so that's my elo. This season after a server transfer I got put Bronze 4, and have been climbing my way back........ winning and getting ACE/MVP all the time on op.gg I'm gold 2 right now, after ~ 300 games. and despite winrate > 50%, I do + 18 LP, - 20 LP. I'm still climbing because of high winrate, but it takes ages. For a plat 3 player to go from bronze 4 to plat 3 takes about 400 games.

Dweeebles1 votes

yeah that is way too many games. Also you should have never been placed in B4 that makes no sense.

Last season around june i got to my d2 promos with a 62% WR.

This season im already 200 games hardstuck in plat XD

Got put into iron 4 despite going 10/0 in placements and ridiculous KP and KDA.

At first i climbed easily into gold then i started to get rubberbanded REALLY hard. And now im slowly with like 55% WR making my way out of plat oh wait i lose more lp than i win despite having an okayish winrate.

Guess i just dropped more than a tier in skill in less than six months or something.

Nah soloQ this season is just a huge grind, exactly what riot wants with a bleeding playerbase that runs away from this game on mass.

Edit: just to clarify i got put in iron 4 on a fresh account. I mean i know riot changed that this season for new/previously unranked accounts but come on.

Yes that's how the "theory goes". That's "how it should be" if the theory was correct. But when it comes to LoL that's the big elephant in the room - a HUGE LIE. Since the practice/reality shows otherwise. And it happens way way way way to often - to call it a random issue. It's clearly MADE TO WORK LIKE THIS. Focused mainly on quantity (to join games asap) - rather than quality and common sense.

I read somewhere in this forum that matchmaking is working as intended. Some Dev informed that its fine and it gives a 50% probability for each team to win.

... i dont feel that 50% probability for each team to win. I feel that are games very one sided.

But i'm just recent here so take my words with a grain of salt.

Ambient Snow1 votes

YEa the 50% win rate is Dog shit. Simply because of the existence of smurfs

you're either getting one that wants to steam roll and get wins or you got one that is simply wanting to let off steam and troll

KirbyCake1 votes

Both.

Ranked is designed to maximize the amount of time you need to spend grinding. Example if you have +20 -20 lp gains with a 55% win rate, on average you would need to spend 50 games to get 100 lp. 55% win rate is really good for a team based 5 v 5 game and probably means you are completely outclassing your opponents. Not to mention riot has shorten queued times for 2 reasons. First is to lower the wait time in lobby, but the second is far more malicious. It is to actually make matchmaking complete dogshit so very skilled players have a lower win rate while dogshit players have a higher win rate. So previously somebody who would usually win 70% of the time with balanced matchmaking now wins 60% of the time will need to grind it a lot longer, while bad players with 30% win rate can occasionally get streaks and win 40% of the time will delude themselves of elo hell and play more.

This results in a death spiral of matchmaking where people are fed up and quit, resulting in less players and resulting in even shittier matchmaking, resulting in MORE people quitting until the game is finally dead. In fact this shit game is already showing the final symptoms of a dying game.

Ambient Snow1 votes

match making is horrible Because the Player base has dropped due to a harsh Increase to how easy it is to make a smurf and how many smurfs are out there.

In short Riots New player base has pretty much died off, and its smurf player base has increase dramatically. Smurfs in reality are ruining this game.. simply because new players cant get their feet wet and learn with out dealing with smurf steam roll accounts or smurf troll accounts ruining their experience.
