Sona was nerfed in her strengths because she played too well against a few champions

RedCyclone··24 votes·2,532 views

Can we have some change to her that makes champions who play too well against Sona not be a instant crippling handicap? (aka give her weakness a small buff)

Blitzcrank and Leona dominate Sona much more then Sona ever dominated Janna and Lulu

May be bias but I don't even think there is a worse matchup then Leona +Draven VS Sona , one stun is flash or death and at level 6 you can't even flash

It wasn't just that she beat a few champions. She had too much sustain and could dish out higher damage than the supports who didn't have that sustain. I agree she is a little weak right now but continuing the nerf circle isn't always the answer. Maybe suggest some changes that would help?

I suggest giving her back the missing health ratio on her heal back to 1:1, but have it scale per rank on W

This way, her laning sustain won't be a problem, while her late game will still be relevant even to full-support Sona.

If Riot doesn't want her heal to be relevant mid to late game, then at least lower the mana cost early on. 80 mana for a whopping 30 hp is pretty ridiculous imo.

canpan141 votes

I agree the early game mana cost hurts, but you have to add in the shield. When they changed her they said they wanted it to be more about make clutch heals and not just slamming on the keys and watching stuff happen. Still I think the heal cost should be cut a little early game.

Yeah, I would actually agree with that 100% if they hadn't actually nerfed the clutch part of it lol. That's why I really want the missing health ratio to be buffed again.

I think it might be too strong if they do that just because of the ap ratios. Might make full ap sona too strong. Would be interesting if they just tried it out on the pbe though.

It would make her heals strong, yes; but Full AP Sona is one of the squishiest glass cannon mages with no mobility spell (sure E gives you lots of ms, but it's no blink/dash)

i dont know why this is down voted, its actually a good idea, as a sona main i understand the heal being weak(er) during laning. but late game i want my heal to be relevent on tanks and my carries since in large team fight can be hard to control where your heal goes. its often times a huge problem if my heal goes to the tank because their hp is lower than my carries but its my carries that needs the heal, then the heal is even relevent. this can result in a lost team fight but if the heal was a higher missing hp ratio then the heal on the tank wouldnt feel like such a huge waste

Yeah, one of the things I really wanted them to change with the rework was the ability to actually choose your target instead of it being auto-targeted. It really feels like they tried to keep her simple for the sake of having her stay an 'easy champ', rather than actually help with her problems.

RedCyclone2 votes

One small thing I thought would be a nice idea is if her W gave Sona a more selfish amount of shielding to herself, just like her E currently does

even if it's just a small amount it would probably prevent a lot of situations where you just feel helpless, plus reducing incoming damage if you are smart enough to anticipate it

canpan141 votes

I could see that happening but I think it would make tarics heal seem even worse than it already is haha.

RedCyclone1 votes

Taric is scheduled for a rework soon, maybe he will have the same mechanic he currently does

plus Taric tends to use his heal just for sustain, while Sona uses it more for incoming damage in the earlygame

To be fair Sona was a little weak when she received her last nerf.

Sona was nerfed in her strengths because the counterplay to her was dangerous

You had to all in and Kill Sona. You couldn't trade, you couldn't poke, you couldn't do anything but ALL IN KILL SONA

All-in's are RISKY if you get outplayed even somewhat where they survive and make it an even trade, they win the lane, if their jungler shows up, they win the lane. Sona was a high damage poke with strong sustain that literally made the other lane auto lose or go on a rampage.

To "fix" Sona, she would either have to lose her AoE damage ultimate, her sustain, or her great burst damage that is unmissable.

Compare her to Nami and Lulu to understand why Sona is atrocious. You can dodge Bubbles and Glitterlance, Lulu has no sustain, Nami has poor burst.

RedCyclone5 votes

Sona has no reliable peel and her escape options suck unlike Nami and Lulu

I wish Q could be a more impactful ability to USE, it becoming a skillshot would probably be ideal, maybe make it work like Rumble's harpoons but give the second cast a diminishing return if used on the same target twice

LankPants2 votes

Personally I wish her E was more impactful. At the moment it feels like just an aura, you do get the small self only speed boost on top but it just doesn't feel like that should be the spell.

Even something like 'Enemies who enter the E aura are slowed by X%' would help it feel less like an after-thought in Sona's kit.

LankPants4 votes

You had to all in and Kill Sona. You couldn't trade, you couldn't poke, you couldn't do anything but ALL IN KILL SONA

The most popular supports right now. Alistar , Bard (competitive) , Blitzcrank (solo que) , Janna , Leona , Thresh . With the sole exception of Janna (and somewhat Bard) all of these champs have insane all ins.

All ins are only risky in lower level play where people just do them mindlessly, if you know where the jungle and mid lane are and you don't pick a terrible time to all in it's very safe to all in a Sona, safer than any other support since she can't really fight back.

You can also play Nami and Soraka against Sona quite easily, as long as you respect her range a little. They both have almost as good poke, better CC and better sustain.

Nami has poor burst.

Nami LV 18 damage (assuming 1 E hit[0 AA damage]) 960+(180%AP)

Sona LV 18 damage (assuming Q power chord[0 AA damage]) 878+(148%AP)

How does Sona have better burst than Nami? More to the point how is Nami not just a superior Sona? She has a stronger heal, hard CC on a basic ability, a better speed boost and to cap it off more damage.

Nami's conterplay is also arguably more dangerous than Sona's since you have to all in a champ with a threat of CCing you. Don't forget that Nami's should be held to the same standards as Sona.

RedCyclone1 votes

Sona's damage is deceptively pathetic looking, but in actuality if you consider cooldowns she is pretty up there in damage what I don't like is how Leona and Thresh crazy high damage bases for seemingly no reason

LankPants1 votes

I was more trying to make the point that Nami's burst isn't bad rather than that Sona's is.

I know Sona's burst can be good, but it just feels so dependent on being ahead at all stages in the game. If you ever fall even the slightest bit behind your damage drops off like a block of lead. The same can be said for most supports, but most supports have a fall-back patern.

RedCyclone1 votes

you are right with that it's difficult to stay afloat as Sona if you ever find yourself behind but to the same point, if she gets well ahead with a Lich and Ludens you are looking at a support who can kill squishy champions with a single rotation

She is a tough champion to balance, her snowball and falloff potentials are a mess and can be tragic if they are ever surpassed

Old Man Teeto3 votes

Nami requires more dedication to the fight, and cuts back on some of her fight sustain as well.

If you use W on the opponent, you have to stay in range of both the back end (to you/ally) but the flip back to them. This means you have more time to punish them.

Additionally, while her "overall" if you land Q with E auto's and her ultimate might result in more, it takes far longer and Bubble isn't the easiest spell to land and her ultimate is still slower than Crescendo.

Sona can drop her full combo of Q -> Auto (arguably Crescendo) in the time frame for Nami to throw her Q and have it all hit with no dodging possible.

What I'm trying to say is that if Sona's numbers were bumped up a bit so she could contend in the lane consistently, which she tends not to do currently, her kit's relative easy lane bullying, is frustrating to lane against.

i mean it's frustrating to play vs Cait, Lucian pre-nerf(s), Annie, Graves basically any lane bully is frustrating but they are made like that so w/e

Nami has poor burst.

yeah, okay

I would really like to see Sona's level 1 W heal for more than a relic shield. The W shield aftereffect feels useless for how short of a duration it is, how little damage it blocks, and ideal times you would want a shield (generally BEFORE poke comes in, so if your adc is full health, it's better not to use it for shield.)

Honestly, if she's ever going to be allowed to be competitive her Q probably needs to be a skillshot.

She's actually one of the most counterplay loaded champs in the game, stemming from her complete lack of survivability. But this is mitigated by how hard it is for people at lower levels to access this counterplay, in the land of missed Thresh hooks pseudo targeted poke and reliable heals reign supreme. Unfortunately this means she has to be weaker to not stomp low levels, meaning she can't be strong at high level because at higher levels people start abusing her easy counters.

Making Q a skillshot helps with this by somewhat normalising her curve between ratings, she'd probably still be stronger than average in Tinfoil VII but hopefully she wouldn't be destroying every game she's played in like she did when she was a decent competitive pick.

no really, she really was never "destroying every game"

LankPants1 votes

I am inclined to agree with that. I was just using hyperbole for how much stronger Sona is at lower ranks.

Slamurai Jack3 votes

Can we please stop asking for buffs for a champion that's had a 53% win rate this entire season? Why don't we buff Talon, Skarner, and Warwick while we're at it? Yes, win rates aren't everything, but when they're consistently and signficantly higher than average for months at a time, maybe the problem is you and not the champion.

RedCyclone6 votes

all she seems to get is nerfs and it does not shift her winrate can't honestly see how exactly a small buff to her weakness would slingshot her to crazy limits, or do anything to her winrate because it looks like it's going to be 51-53% forever

When champions stay strong regardless of nerfs its never a good idea to buff them. Aka Ahri. As long as sona has her simplistic playstyle she will remain strong maybe not for higher elos but definitely for anything gold and lower. Talon has a similar issue. This man has only seen nerfs since release but still retains a consistent winrate. Sona isnt receiving monstrous nerfs overall. She has just got like 25 small ones and most were because the previous nerfs didnt do anything significant to stop her from beating harder to play champions. I've seen champions nerfed harder in one patch than sona has been since I started in S2.

Sona will always function regardless of how much people want to believe she doesnt for whatever reason mostly because there isnt really a way to fuck it up. Unless riot Diana's her she isnt gonna ever be useless. I picked up sona against thresh last time I played her. Utterly destroyed that lane because I just had to worry about positioning which was easy.

Lugg2 votes

Sona was crushing everyone bot before she got nerfed.

RedCyclone8 votes

This is untrue specially for the reworked Sona who still took a bunch of hits after the rework was considered a nerf by most of the community

The only way this statement has ever been true was the horror of release Sona, any other time she has been a top pick has been because she was a safe pick, much like Thresh is right now and for the last 2+ years

Lugg2 votes

She was so strong last season that she was one of the top MIDS as well as support.

RedCyclone5 votes

uwot Sona typically hasn't been seen midlane literally since her broken release, she has never been seen as a viable pick out of bottom lane support since then

Don't bother. Lugg can't see any reason beyond what he sees in LCS and what Riot tells him is true.

I'm beginning to think you don't know the history of Sona. Her Q got nerfed AGAIN in patch 4.20 because she was starting to dominate mid too much and they wanted her to stay bot. They were so worried about it that they nerfed it in 5.1 as well. Case closed.

She didn't beat a couple of champs. She beat most champs.

FistOfSharkiesha1 votes

I think her bigger issue is the champions she's paired with. Sona + Draven is possibly the strongest bot lane in the game, even after her nerfs.

RedCyclone2 votes

just any poke or cc support plus Draven is brutal he falls off lategame and has limited mobility, this is probably why he isn't played all the time

FistOfSharkiesha1 votes

That is true but abilities that can't miss plus beefed up auto attacks that can't miss is outrageous when you've also got Sona's sustain, shield, and utility.

UPfreely1 votes

she looks like she's in a pretty good spot to me... http://champion.gg/champion/Sona/Support

LankPants3 votes

Sona's amount of competitive play this season: near zero.

Solo que winrates mean nothing. Hiemerdinger has one of the highest winrates, does that make him one of the strongest champs? Does LB need buffs because she has a 44% winrate?

She's the worst support ATM other than maybe Soraka. She 100% needs some buffs if she's ever going to be seen in competitive again.

Gamemaster Anth1 votes

O_O Wait...so it wasn't a fluke I was able to solo against Janna as Sona?!? Sona is actually strong against her?!?

Dang...and here I thought it was just that Janna player being too aggro. Me and an Ezreal player were able to first blood her before the minions even spawned!

Meeks0111 votes

Yeah... I've seen about 1 Sona in the past month and 10 Blitzcranks.
