Is dodging an acceptable strategy for climbing ?

Just dodged a game deliberately for the first time ever because I didn't like the composition(Cass Support and Lee Sin AD Carry ? Seriously ?). Was thinking about whether dodging could be used as a legitimate strategy to win more games. Sometimes you just know which team compositions will be stronger from champ select. Does anyone do this ?

Its pretty standard practice actually. Dodging poor team comps or "red flag" teammates has always been part of proper climbing technique. Dodges effectively cost people below D1 nothing but time since MMR is all that matters and LP isn't important in the slightest. Once you get to a point where LP matters to progress you will need to be more careful about using dodges, but this only applies in Master Tier and up and D1 for players attempting to get into Master Tier. I probably dodge 2 ranked matches a day. Maybe more. I had one day where I dodged 7 games in a row just to make sure I didn't have to play with troll players and I could keep my 14 game win streak going. I started that day at gold 3 0 LP like 2 seasons back, maybe last season. Got down to -63 LP before I played a single game. Won my next 6 straight to hit promos and earned my skip to Gold 1. Intelligent use of the dodge function is a vital element to master for climbing.

Ah nice. Thx for the detailed answer. I had no idea that many people did this deliberately as a legitimate strategy to climb. Thx for clearing it up.

Happy to help. Just make sure you do your homework before you use them. Always op.gg every team mate every match, communicate with them about an ideal team comp, and try to get everyone on the same page first. If one of the players you op.gg is tilted and on a loss streak, or is first timing a champ, or has a really poor performance record on a champ, or is duoing or premading with a group they have a less than 60% win rate with these are typically things considered a red flag. Its usually wise to avoid these matches. Dodging purely on team comp should happen less, particularly in low level play where compositions are a lot less important than player knowledge and skill, but there are certainly comps and champs I will actively avoid. I will NEVER play with a teemo on my team, and I don't much care for Akali, Katarina, Warwick, Nunu, Aatrox, Kled, or Shaco either as all of these champs are pigeonholed into a unique and inflexible niche role that is typically far less successful than more contemporary meta picks. Again, always be sure to op.gg everyone first. Some times you get that beast mode Katarina main with a 10:1 average KDA. Some times that teemo support has an 80% win rate over 40 games. So while champions and poor compositions can also be a red flag, be sure that the player isn't some supremely skilled smurf who can get you a free win.

I ran into this guy: http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=silencee+dgaf in promos to D5 on my one trick eve account for the season oOBestEveNaOo and I was queued up as JG and got JG. We got into lobby he said he was going to play jungle despite being in as support. Various members of the team started to whine about him "trolling". One player looked him up. Me. I said "I'll take muh free win, 83% win rate op, have at it mate." He went to level two invade the enemy at his red buff on the bot half of the map. I saw what he wanted to do so I abandoned Ezreal to 1v2 bot lane and wandered off behind Yi at level 1 to the enemy red. We got first blood 5 seconds later. Then we went over to the enemy raptor camp, cleared em, and double flashed over the wall under the tier 1 mid turret to dive the enemy mid laner for kill number 2 a mere 20 seconds after first blood. At this point I'm laughing hysterically, and Yi and I both know the enemy jg is now heading for his blue after respwaning. Naturally he wound up dead at his second buff. I backed and returned to lane after ezreal managed a 1v2 double kill somehow. At the 4 minute mark I made it back to lane, I was 0-0-3, yi was 3-0-0, ez was 2-0-0, and we were up 5 nothing in the first 4 minutes. The rest was history. Then, at the VERY end of the game, we win a fight, kill the nexus turrets and yi, for some crazy reason backs instead of ending with the entire enemy team still on death timers for 20 seconds. We asked him why he didnt just end. He said "Cuz its ranked... and I haven't 1v5 penta killed them yet..."

Seriously? Come on YI just end the fucking ga---

Double kill, Triple kill, Quadra kill, PENTA KILL

--me plz mate... Well. That was 1v5, so... we CAN end now yes?

MasterYi : Yah, now we can end.

Cool. Question though. When looking up players, how do you do it ? As far as I know op.gg only acknowledges a lobby once champ select has ended. Do you type out the name of each player while champ select is in progress ? I often want to look up players in lobby but some of these names people have, god. Sometimes you're not sure if it's a '0' or 'o'. Then there're some people with some long ass summoner names. Seems it would take forever to look up everybody before champ select is over if you actually have to type out their names.

Hahaha. I really enjoyed reading this story. So funny. Besides that, I'd actually like to see the replay. Must be something I can learn from a Yi that manages a 84% win-rate at such a high level of play.

Yeah, I just type em in. Or copy paste if they have used chat. I'm pretty chatty and I try to joke around to illicit responses so I usually manage to just copy pasta most of them.

There is actually a replay saved! It's on the op.gg for besteve and you are welcome to watch. Fair warning: I think the replay is bugged sadly, it acts funky. Try it out and you'll see what I mean.

I've used op.gg's replay facility in the past. Yea it's quirky. Quite a bit of bugs. You should sign up for replay.gg. It's really good and stable and you don't have to do a thing after signing up. It records your replays automatically without you having to to a thing and playback is very easy. You just go to their site and look up your summoner name and you get a nice long list of all the games you've played in recent times. The only quirk is that sometimes it doesn't record games but it happens for like 1 in every 5 games or so. I highly recommend it.

It's a viable strategy for staying sane.

It generally behooves your ability to climb if you maintain your sanity.

There is a reason for the LP loss per dodge you can do it all you wish but eachtime you do it the effect multiplies Example being 1st dodge 2 lp 2nd dodge 4 lp 3rd 6 4th 8 ( you get the point ) those are all consecutive so if you play a game inbetween you should be good to dodge next time ( Must play a game in mode your dodging ) should reset to 2 after 1 game is completed

This is incorrect entirely.

Your first dodge of a 24 hour period for a ranked match costs you 3 LP and a short wait, like 5 minutes.

Each subsequent dodge after the first in a 24 hour period costs 10 LP and a 30 minute wait.

The penalty resets after you have logged out for a period of about 4-6 hours and 24 hours has elapsed since the initial ranked match dodge.

dodging will lower your lp but not your mmr. So doing so you can skip divisions actually. If your going to dodge though, make sure to look up there ign at least to say if they main that champon and have a decent win rate with it before flat out dodging. Because someimes those weird ones actually have 70-80% win rates with 50+ games on them where your mid lane leblanc has 90 games played but only 40% win rate

Honestly as soon as you hop into champion select and the first message starts with, "lol this bitch again" it's probably a good idea to dodge xD

InfernoFøx1 votes

Honestly it is a very used strategy when you are trying to get as much LP as possible. If you feel as though you are not going to do well with that Katarina JG and the claimed AFK top laners (or other scenarios (just naming a few troll picks)) its ok to lose the little bit of LP. If it means dodging a clear loss then yes please dodge. But dont dodge too much because, well, you know why.

Maximum Morde1 votes

Yes it's a legitimate strategy. Knowing when to dodge is almost as important as knowing which of your own champions to pick.

Pierce The Veal1 votes

It is a viable strategy. Your rank and lo gain/loss is entirely decided by your background mmr. Said mmr is only affect by wins and losses. If you win more often, you gain more lp when you win, and lose less when you lose. Thus, it is better to dodge and lose some lp rather than lose some mmr and lose out on future gains.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Dodging is a perfectly viable strategy.

I'd recommend checking the OP.GG of your teammates during champion select and looking at their recent win/loss streak and check if they are premade with one another (based on previous games).

If you notice 2+ allies are on a loss streak (especially if they are premade together), dodging is a good option.

Another factor to look for is team composition. If you know that the enemy team composition is better (i.e. Even lane was countered, your team is all-AD, your team is pure squish with no engage/peel), you might be better off dodging. While you can win those games (especially in lower ELOs), it is often not worth the risk.

Thx ;) Makes a lot of sense.
