Ive come to the conclusion riot employs the trump model when it comes to reworks.

For those of you who dont know, the trump business model is;

  1. Buy a (successful) company
  2. Change it how you want it changed
  3. hope your changes dont alienate the existing customer base
  4. take the profits and declare bankruptcy if it fails. the trump model has a very high failure rate.

How does this relate to riots practices? Simple; a majority of the time a rework is not done by the same person who originally developed it, and more often than not is a TOTAL rework, changing the champion completely from the original intention. What are the best reworks in recent memory that werent part of a mass rebalance? Poppy and sion. Of the 5 or so reworks last year, ONLY two were "good" and well liked.
Shen is a perfect example of the trump model at work in riot; the new Q and W are NOT good changes to shen and turn him into a tank-busting top laner instead of a powerful bully tank.

I should also mention that theres an opposite to the trump model; the warren umbrella. the warren umbrella keeps things largely the same, simply fixing problems as they arise and tweaking things over time. Under the warren umbrella, shens Q and W would have been given good HP scaling instead of AP scaling and his passive would likely have been changed into something like the new Q; for x basic attacks, deal %HP damage every xx seconds. and made extremely visible (the spirit sword would have been a good indicator.)

TRUMP 2016

Its not a political thing... the trump way of doing business is an actual, documented thing....

It's all he knows. He'd surely apply this strategy to the country, too.

Probably because you mentioned a political figure. You have some really great points, though-- especially that Shen one. Personally, I'd rather they'd just made AP Shen viable again, because there aren't many AP bruisers.

But then you run into the problem of meaningful scaling; AP bruisers get 300AP and stack HP. Shen is just... flat better as a tank. Adding HP scaling to his non-utility abilities and maybe making his heal % based AND scale with AP would be a good idea. Shens heal, E, and R are all good things to keep AP because theyre mostly utility...

Another really good example of the trump model at work :P They really should have just reworked sona into a minion-siege mid laner whose abilities had a passive minion-buff.

That's an interesting concept. I can't say whether it would've worked or not, it very well could've been either OP or UP, but it's a unique idea. Something that ALL of Fearless' works have completely lacked. As it was, Song of Celerity pre-4.13 already did apply to minions and helped get your minions into the fray faster.

Considering the Baron Nashor is borderline OP, but the Rift Herald is severely underwhelming, certainly the design has a lot of room for numbers-tuning.

^^ It would give sona a huge niche that, with the amount of waveclear in the game, would be easily balanceable. Instead of turning sona into something no one but hardcore sona players play and really isnt balancable...
