What are your thoughts on Vel'Koz?

Firstly, yes I'm a Vel'Koz main, and secondly no, I will not be offended by anything you have to say. Whether it's playing as him, with him, against him, I want to hear it. What's your stereotype of the average Vel player? Do you think he needs to be stronger? What about weaker? Should he just stay the same? Is he too simple? Does it take too long to learn him? I don't care what it is, just give me your thoughts! Nobody on the boards seems to talk about him, so I just want to hear it.

My stereotype?

That vel players think they're good when all they do is press R and ks their whole team in a teamfight.

And A Real Hiero1 votes

Kill securing a entire team is pretty good though.

Vel'koz is ok.

He suffers heavily from mobility creep and the mid lane meta is really cancer for him with their mobility, burst, or ways to disrupt his ult and one shot in the process. Kassadin Katarina Ahri Cassiopeia Malzahar Orianna

Reminder these are camping his lane and abusing his imobility: Elise LeeSin Sejuani JarvanIV Maokai Rammus RekSai

Primarily the reasoning behind why you see him support more so then mid (varying patch by patch) because what he does is good, he's a solid champion on his own, but what's around him really hinders how much he can do.

This is all I think of whenever Vel'koz comes up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abIpfFQJyxg

His damage is too high for his safety. Landing a Q post-6 is basically a guaranteed kill unless they Flash or have mobility to get out of his ult.

If something can potentially all-in him, he can literally just press R from beyond their range and chunk 60-70% of their health, preventing them from actually going all in. There aren't really any bad match ups, just match ups he can't score a kill in.

His lack of mobility doesn't matter very much because his kiting ability is stupid.

It has been long told that vel is the most balanced midlaner. And he is extremely satisfying and versatile being able to flex pick.

Overall I find that vel players are "wierd". They actually pick a talking octopus with lasers. It is absolutely ridiculous.

Is it good? Of COURSE.

Think of all the eye and tentacle jokes. The possibilities are infinite.

I'd call myself a Vel main as well, though he is my 2nd main mid laner (first being Anivia) But I dont usually see much complaining about him on the forums and there was only a few times I see people complaining about him but that is mostly when he is played as a kill lane support but at the same time, those people would probably complain about Zyra Brand as well.

I usually pick Vel when I'm not comfortable blind picking Anivia or if I know that match up is bad on her so I'd feel more safe picking Vel due to his range and not needing to get close. Though he does have some good weaknesses, like how most of his abilities can be dodged and are some what easy to dodge, and his lack of mobility, which is probably why he isn't played to many times in the LCS (Though he has been seeing some play here and there, mainly by Huhi or however you spell his name).

I don't think he needs any changes, I feel he is perfectly balanced the way he is. Though we'll really have to see how things change in the preseason to judge that.

Pros :

  • Damage on Passive and on all of his skills.
  • Good ratios on his main damage sources ( Passive + R ).
  • Mana sustain on Q for farming.
  • His poke skill Q have a slow.
  • One of the few Mages Tanks cant completely ignore like nothing.

Cons :

  • Bad ratios on his W and E.
  • Very slow travel time on his Q and E ( very easy to dodge ).
  • His W have a delayed part and a long recharge time.
  • Depends heavily on procing his passive to do damage.
  • Depends heavily on landing his E ( his combo enabler ) to proc his passive.
  • item 3194 fuks his E + R ( if not enhanced by passive ).
  • must choose between 2 equally bad choices ( if u rush magic pen items to rely on ur base damages ur combo will deal much less damage cuz of ur bad ratios on W and E and cuz of low AP gained from items for ur Passive and R, on the other hand if u rush expensive AP heavy items and fail to proc ur passive and use R afterwards u will end up useless cuz ur low ratios on W and E + no pen for ur base damages ).

Overall he is just too conditional and unreliable for my taste that i prefer to pick any ADC ( melee or ranged ), any AD Assassin, any AD fighter and champs like Fizz Ekko Vladimir Akali Annie Gragas Kassadin Kennen Malzahar Rumble Syndra mid if i ever wanted to play Summoner Rift once or twice every 3 months.

I disagree on these.

First, I think his W is meant to be timed carefully so that you always have 1 charge of it to use. If you're always waiting for its cooldown to finish, you're using the W too fast. Getting used to the tempo of his ability cooldowns will help you crank out tons of damage in the long run, and you almost don't need to use his R every time to score a kill. Most of my kills come from a quick W>Q>E combo, which saves my ult for team fights or stronger enemies. It's not a disadvantage if you know how to use it properly.

Second, he doesn't necessarily need his passive to deal damage, as his Q alone hits pretty hard around mid-game. WIthout his passive, he is slightly weaker by comparison to other champions, but that's the nature of his kit. You have multiple ways to keep at least one stack of his passive on enemies at all times, thereby reducing the number of hits it takes to trigger the passive.

Third, the passive debuff applies no matter what ability you use, and all of them require timing and skill. Using his W is more advantageous in conjunction with Q because you can use the Q's slow to land the E more efficiently. While they're coming down from the knockup, you can unleash his ult to finish enemies off. The combo I use is (ideally): W (for 2 stacks)>Q (procs passive, places slow)>W (second time, 2 stacks)>E (procs passive, knockup)>R (procs passive one more time--if on the enemy long enough). The projectile flight time on his E is the slowest of the three, so it makes more sense to me to use the E after they are slowed with Q.

I've lost count how many S's I have now with Vel'Koz.

It's kind of hard to stereotype a Vel'Koz main. Vel'Koz has such a low play rate so there's not enough sample size. My thoughts on Vel'Koz, he definitely lives up to his reputation of being one of the Mose balanced champions. However I feel like he's a slightly weak right now. I wish his e suspension duration would be 1 sec instead of .75 sec. It frustrates me when champions like brand and syndra get 1.5 sec stuns when they have instant ultimates while Vel'Koz only gets .75 sec suspension with an ultimate that does damage over 2.5 secs.

I find that his passive is undervalued. Lots of people prefer to blast off his ultimate right off the bat in a teamfight, but poking repeatedly to set off the bonus true-damage can score kills just as easily. Honestly, with a maximized cdr build, his ability to deal damage with his passive/pokes gets insane.

The only thing I hate about Vel'Koz is Yasuo.

My thoughts? Very fun to play

Early game passive damage could use a buff.

Ult could use a small camera zoom out. The beam runs off the visible camera limits at certain angles requiring players to manipulate the camera while also trying to aim the ult.

Lastly, Vel'Koz could use a new skin

Vanic9981 votes

Wow you mentioned the things I forgot to mention. I do agree Vel'Koz needs a zoom out when he uses his ultimate and he could use a new skin. Preferably an ultimate skin.

I am a Vel'Koz main. My first thought is that the champion is underrated. By reading other's comments bellow, I can tell you that his skillshots, in my opinion, don't have to be faster since there are so many ways to land them to deceive your enemies. But that's another story. I've met Vel'Koz mains and from my limited experience, all three were pretty nice and calculated people. Moving to your next questions, it is a matter of gameplay knowledge to avoid being abused in laning phase, Vel'Koz is already quite OP. To learn to play the game itself, you have to start with easy champions. Although, Vel'Koz has a simple kit idea, there are psychical ways to dominate the enemies (like landing a Q in a certain direction and R instantly to deceive them). Besides that, Vel'Koz is pretty hard to play because of his slow landing abilities, therefore it takes time to master the champion. Good luck though!
