Not because he can snowball really hard
It's because Darius can counter almost every top laner and make their laning phase a miserable experience. Seriously, other than Lulu and Gnar, I can't think of a single top laner that can consistently beat Darius in 100% of situations assuming equal skill and no jungler intervention.

The problem is that while you can avoid dying to Darius if you are smart, you can't really avoid being zoned by him. He can zone almost all top laners, Lulu and Gnar are exceptions because they are ranged and can farm from a safe distance if needed, and they can also poke Darius and avoid being hit by his Q.
While as a melee, you just either take a Q on your face, or you lose farm and is zoned.
Randomonium1 votesYeah, his Q with his sustain is pretty annoying. That's why Renekton is is a great choice against him because Renekton's sustain is just as good. I think the key when fighting him with a melee champ is to not get hit with the blade of his axe (i.e. close distance on him if he tries to Q and you can't get out of range.)
I imagine melee champions with good sustain or hard CC do well against him. Statistically speaking he is getting wrecked by Riven, Aatrox, Fiora, Tahm Kench, Volibear, Trundle, Rengar, Pantheon, Mundo, Wukong and Ekko in addition to the ranged champions you would expect to beat Darius. http://champion.gg/champion/Darius/Top

SH Azykan1 votesdarius doesnt exactly have any issues with Heim... start dorans shield. Rush a hex drinker. Heim now has no way to kill you, and you can easily clear his turrets (your Q wrecks his turrets) And if you land an E on heim he will very likely die
Nunu is a 50/50 matchup and if either jg shows up its pretty much easy kills

Also the problem is not losing lane against him, but being zoned, and Darius can zone most top laners.

that being said, the majority of lane bullies can beat him hard early on. Don't fight him long enough to get 5 stacks and you can usually win trades, too
