PSA: This abomination is about as close to a hard reset as you can get

Eedat··52 votes·17,189 views

So for everyone who asks every year for a hard reset in ranked because they're hardstuck 'because ELO hell', this atrocity of ranked quality is pretty damn close to a hard reset. Only difference being is that with an actual hard reset you will legit get high Dia to Challenger players in your games even though you ended last season Silver 3.

Everyone having fun in their soloQ games with players who ended last season anywhere from Bronze to high Plat randomly distributed on both teams? No?

So please refrain from going back to asking for hard resets next season. Or ever again really. See how absolutely terrible of an idea it is now?

The fact that “elo hell” is still a thing discussed in OW, Dota, League communities is kinda funny. Just laugh at them and enjoy their struggles and mental gymnastics.

the fact people still think elohell isn't real is hilarious though.

The fact that people can play hundreds of ranked games in a season and still desparately cling on to the idea that they're so amazing and it's only their team holding them back is sad and incredibly delusional. Whelp, you know how people are. Gotta make up some bullshit excuse because it's never their fault

I have climbed from bronze 5 to Gold 5 in a whole season so I can guarantee elo hell isn't a thing it's just called learning.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

This ^

I've done it on half a dozen of accounts and i've never been stuck. And I ALWAYS managed to climb as high as I was on my main +/- 2 divisions

BigfootNamedYeti1 votes

I'm kinda hoping to lan iron so I have something to do

SociaI Justice4 votes

i think i have a pretty objective look on this since at this point i can climb to dia in about a 100 games playing any role, now the thing is i was a fresh proud gaymer that had reached d3 2 years ago and figured i'd make a smurf account for the sake of it. now you would think i'd go around stomping scrubs at low elo but i actually got stuck in high silver / low gold elo and then later on again at high plat.

now why did that happen? did i get considerably worse by switching accounts? no i had just gotten used to respecting my opponents and somewhat trusting in my team, i had a very low risk low reward playstyle that allowed me to get stuck at an elo way bellow my actual level just for the fact that despite being more useful than my opponent every game i didn't have enough impact on the game.

TL;DR being able to climb at a decent speed and playing well aren't necessarily the same thing, this isn't to say that most people aren't at their elo for a reason but it is possible to be stuck bellow your actual skill level.

charge attack2 votes

Why does no one ever post this on their Diamond 2 account and then confirm with their silver account. I only ever see stories with no proof ever.

There’s a difference between stuck and hardstuck. You can be unlucky and be stuck in a division for 10, maybe 20 games. But if you’re there for 100 games then, yeah, you deserve it.

SociaI Justice1 votes

"why do you not post from your d3 account rather than a smurf that went to p1 100lp in less than 100 games", well its pretty simple really, my """"main"""" is banned from both the boards and the game.

then confirm with their silver account

why the fuck would i lie about being stuck in silver lmao

charge attack2 votes

Just wanna see that you’re playing the same champs but one account is being held back by Riot games and the other has lucked into high diamond. Yet to be proven. So pce.

No one says you'll necessarily climb fast, but some people complain about elo hell when they've played nearly a thousand games and are sitting at a 49% win rate. I'm guessing it didn't take you a thousand games to get out of Silver/Gold.

SociaI Justice1 votes

like i said this doesn't go for everyone complaining about elo hell, but lets say for a gold 3 player to be stuck in silver is very much possible and probably the reality for a lot of people. think i had like a 44% wr over 60 games in silver and then got out of it in 20 more games after adjusting my play but i did have to adjust.

meh I am not going to pretend like elo hell a thing but fuck man I had it rough last season. And ultimately it was rough because I switched roles a lot, tilted, and just wasn't as good at the meta. But last season was still brutal. People eventually got to their ranks but holy hell man haha. It took awhile for me to adjust & I saw other veterans struggle as well. People will never know what I saw. The huge losing streaks being #1 on your team every game only to have the by far #10 player drag your team down again & again repeatedly. Ultimately I got back to my rank and it would have taken less time if I didn't tilt & played my best role/champs so it's my fault. Still so frustrating though. I have never had less then 50% ranked win rate since my first season of ranked and this season I had 40% win rate most the season.... even got back to prior ranked after like 200 games with 48% lol. Now of course.... someone higher elo going to say "yo it you"... which yea ultimately obviously if I was low plat or diamond getting to gold like 4 (before changes) would be pretty easy. But that's the thing. If your skill level is say gold 3 on average and you are stuck jumping from silver 1 - to silver 2, your actual rank might still be gold 3-4 but to get a couple divs it can take some time. And boooyyyyyyy did it take some mother fucking time last season. I have never had just one sided games in my life so often. So damn brutal. Obviously if I just spammed Graves jungle (especially later in season) I would have ranked up much quicker sooooo yeesss it's on me. But you also have to realize I play all roles but top at about the same level.... and many champs about same skill level..... so its not like I am first timing champs lol. (I know gold really low elo but just saying I have ranked up multiple accounts to gold last few seasons maining different roles & camps so when I say I know about my elo for most roles I really do lol).

Sorry..... I know elo hell not a thing but season 8 legit broke me. The damage creep really messed me up games were so much quicker paced then I was used to after playing since season 1 my brain just never really adjusted. Was so damn frustrating lol.

the fact people still think elohell isn't real is hilarious though.

Elo hell isn’t real though.

If you belong at a higher rank, you can consistently reach that higher rank. Might take 20-50 games longer, but you’re never “stuck” if you don’t belong there.

Elo hell actually is a thing. As I see challenger streamers struggling to get out of gold or plat because of how bad their teams are. People here just do whatever they want and with the meta's we had lately, you just cannot carry. No matter what rank you are.

charge attack5 votes

Point me in the direction of these Challenger streamers and their stuck in gold/Plat accounts. I’d like to see a link to their challenger account and their gold account. Thx.

I'm D II- III. My smurf this year got dropped from Silver I into Bronze II while I was experimenting with Neeko builds. It took some 190 games to get back to S III, and most of that is a straight ~80% win streak at the end.

I'd get to a promo, and then have 4 people literally 1/16 on me while I had over FOUR TIMES their damage/objectives.

I finally had to stop playing lane appropriate champs and just play Zyra EVERYTHING (Zyra adc, Zyra support, Zyra jungle, Zyra Top, Zyra mid) and just stomp 1v5).

Elo hell via MMR placing isn't real. But Elo hell via expected proficiency players is VERY real. Your contribution is diminished when 4 people are so unskillful that they are just as bad legitimately playing as they would be just int feeding. That's where low Silver/Bronze is right now. They do not understand that early game kills/deaths are the most influential factor to winning a game. They do not mind going 5/25, "because teamwork can beat that late game."

(The other team can be unskillful too, but if your team is the one losing the cointoss clownfest, even bad players fed a 2-3 item advantage can beat a smurf. And you can't be everywhere at once preventing their deaths)

Please post on your diamond account for proof. Ty.

Define "struggling". Going from a 90% win rate to a 60% win rate?

FNC 6ixGOD1 votes

They lose like 1 game out of every 2/3 in plat and low dia. Since bronze-gold teams are still hard to carry sometimes but they are also not very good at the game so they throw a lot. 1 person can carry a gold team but in high gold it starts to be harder. Especially in plat it will become hard since carries are squishys and have counterplay, and players in plat know this counterplay. And if the enemy team gets fed and this smurf player is the only one fed then he will still die everytime if not played perfectly.

the fact people still think elohell isn't real is hilarious though.

People still have this mindset from a time where an individual player could snowball out of control, and itemisation allowing you to tailor to one specific problem causer, despite the meta constantly shifting.

As it stands, right now, when an assassin is 2k gold above you from getting fed off of other lanes and decides to ramble towards your lane... One of two things happens. You die instantly, proceeding to give your bounty gold from farming and further increasing their lead. Or you blow everything to get the hell out of dodge, subsequently being at a disadvantage even to your laner.

But people are stubborn, even hypocritical. They'd tell you that while vehemently calling a champion like Kassadin, or Akali, or Irelia too omnipotent. If you're playing an Assassin right now, I agree with them, but if you're a support or an ADC or you just like tanks... Question your choices, because you have little influence on the game if none at all.

I think it's ok. Getting smashed by someone a lot better than you feels terrible, but it's also one of the best ways to learn the game.

Paroe4 votes

I think it's ok. Getting smashed by someone a lot better than you feels terrible, but it's also one of the best ways to learn the game.

This is actually one of the worst things people think about this in league of legends. When you play against someone with more skill than you, and are skilled enough to recognize what they are doing that is skilled its a great way to improve. But in league of legends, theres enough numerically strong, low skill champions out there and theres enough simply bad players out there that a game where you get roflstomped is a game that you learn nothing from. The overall game quality makes it so that you cannot learn from a loss unless you are already in a 'learning' state with any given champion.

The only real exception to that is support, because a skilled support you can see what they do at most skill levels and learn from it.

y0r1ck1 votes

You don't have to be skilled to realize someone is better than you and learn from people. You just have to be humble. You can learn a lot in a game in which you get roflstomped, if you keep an open mind and observe carefully.

DrCyanide3 votes

The skill gap has to be close enough that you can recognize why you lost. If you can't understand what they did better than you then you can't improve in that area.

y0r1ck1 votes

Even if someone gets demolished 0/20/0, they can still say "wow that guy is good I'll just try to copy him." Does skill difference prevent you from opening up a replay and watching a game? If two players are so vastly mismatched, then even looking at the items a better player built is learning.

DrCyanide2 votes

If someone went 0/20/0, their reaction is "this game is crap. I did everything I could possibly do but I still got destroyed and the other guy was playing something completely broken."

A skill difference that big prevents you from understanding what's going on in the replay. You see that you had to come deal with a massive wave of minions that was barreling towards your base, but you don't see how that minion wave came to be so massive. You see what items they bought, but if picking the same champion and building the same build was all it took to be better anyone who followed a Mobafire build would be in Plat+. You see that they went and fought Baron with only 3 people, but you don't know what made them decide it was the right time.

There's a reason people aren't taught how to swim by throwing them into an Olympic swimming pool and having them race against world record holders.

y0r1ck1 votes

A person with the reaction you described isn't staying humble or calm. If the person overcomes his frustration there is a lot to learn. Edit: there's no way the two mismatched opponents will be able to fairly match up, but the weaker opponent has much to gain. Im not saying the weaker opponent will learn enough to challenge the stronger, just that the weaker opponent will learn more from stronger opponents.

I don't think the Olympic swimming analogy is relevant, it's difficult to observe while drowning. I think chess is more relevant. I think I'd learn more playing vs Kasparov or Carlsen than I would learn playing vs some random bum on the street.

If you wanna use the Olympic analogy use something like weightlifting or archery. You'll learn so much more competing with them than you'd learn at the neighborhood gym. You could see the way they plant their feet, or the part of their body that they move first. You could watch as they lower the weight or pull the arrow back and emulate what they do, and you'll be learning more than you would at the neighborhood gym.

But all of this only applies if a person is humble and pays careful attention.

NaturesMayhem2 votes

They doesn't work in gaming most of the time. Reason being is that it's a game to most, not a practice or an art. People don't intend to perfect their skills, they just play and gradually improve for the general community. When you're getting stomped and your only reason for playing is to have fun, it ruins your experience and that bad mood it puts you in is just going to make you do worse and learn less. Better players are a great learning source, but trial by fire is some real bs that hardly ever works. Especially if you have something on the line, your elo, losing something even game points can be upsetting and players shouldn't have to deal with that for the sake of learning.

DerPunkt1 votes

Nah thats not entirely true. I can realize and learn in the field of a hobby very well. Bit as this pointed out

{quoted}

The skill gap has to be close enough that you can recognize why you lost. If you can't understand what they did better than you then you can't improve in that area.

The gap as to be small enough. In Education we talk about encourage and demand. The important part is where you draw the line to asking to much.

So a learner of English as a second language in the first year might really really benefit from reading a simple short story or listening to pop music lyrics, but he will be overwhelmed by following a political debate, listening to the news or reading Shakespear. They will not learn anything but just get frustrated. So you have to encourage them by giving them task they can solve, but they should still demand some work. For example when you introduce new vocabulary in a story they have to read. Just toss in some words they might not know. They will learn by context, but spare them with technical jargon and the little differences. Its ok if they don't know the difference between a tower a turret, its important they get its a high building with a slim silhouette.

In terms of LoL this is, understanding that they got killed because the enemy had flash to get close and AA them. But if they get killed by a Challenger Caitlyn with 4 AAs in one second achieved by a series of headshot-auto-cancel

https://clips.twitch.tv/BoxyHeadstrongBunnyOhMyDog

Than they will not understand what happend and they will learn nothing. Now Cait is just OP. They are so far from understanding what happend, they will not get it. They will not learn it. They are gameknowledge wise and mechanicale not on a level that makes something like this work. So for them it is not in the game and looks like a cheat. But understanding that saving at least one trap to place it under a stunned target and chain CC this way and get a headshot makes a lot of sense, this is something they will learn. This is something an Iron play can pick up from a bronze player when he ever got hit by CC and than CCed by a trap and died. He will very quickly understand how strong it is to not build a wall of traps and hope for somebody to step in but actively use traps in fights to force a headshot.

y0r1ck1 votes

Lol they will learn that a farmed Caitlyn is scary. That person won't go near a strong Caitlyn without protection again. That seems like reasonable learning to me.

Strong champion killed me when I got too close? Better give them some more respect.

how is that not learning? If he didn't know cait could do that, now he knows and he'll respect the champion appropriately.

... you do realize matchmaking is not based on rank do you?

There is basically no difference in what happend this year to what happend the years before.

JesusCchrist I am kinda sick of people ripping on the Rank and Matchmaking system without having the slightest clue of how it works at all.

So please refrain from going back to asking for hard resets next season. Or ever again really. See how absolutely terrible of an idea it is now?

Nothing that even comes close to a Hard Reset has happend in LoL apart from season 1 to 2 I believe that time they did a hard reset, but I am not 100% certain and to lazy to google it for this low effort rambling of a post.

Lv60 Retri Pala1 votes

I just want a hard reset so I can climb a lot. With the current system I usually start my new season between Plat 3 and Plat 1 after having ended around Plat 1 - Dia 5, so only a few divisions below where I ended last season. It's actually really pointless and boring and I wish I would start lower so I can enjoy a longer climb.

Gotta admit, I really hate that way of thinking about Ranked. I would prefer for Ranked to be more accurate and competitive, than grindy.

But to each their own, I guess. Maybe separate position ranks will help out folks like you, if you don't mind changing roles to get more space to climb.

so you don't feel like its kind of lame that you don't climb at all all season? Edit: nvm you were gold last season so you actually climbed, I'm hardstuck low Diamond for like 4-5 seasons now and I don't even know why I'm even plasying my placements anymore. No. What is fun about beating people you know are worse than you?

nvm you were gold last season

I was P1 when I played semi-seriously 3-4 years ago and then I abandoned the game for a couple of years. So I've never really been in gold except for the first seasons.

I'm hardstuck low Diamond for like 4-5 seasons now and I don't even know why I'm even plasying my placements anymore.

I fail to see how playing vs weaker players is satisfying. If you want to truly climb and not just outplay by definition weaker opponents, you should advance your skill. It's not a matchmaking failure that you play vs equally skilled people; it's the opposite.

Starcraft243ver1 votes

The only reason you are stuck is because you are not improving faster than the top 1%.

You are not entitled to climb. You have to earn it, and you do not earn it by playing, you earn it by training.
