Garen has a 76% ban ratio across all elos

Just my opinion, but I question who the hell still bans Garen.

Might just be me.

Well Garen is pretty strong right now in lower elo's, not many people really know how to deal with him. I have no clue why higher elo's would ban him, all you need is a good Vlad, Ryze, Jayce, Darius is capable of beating him, Gnar can kite for days with Frozen Mallet, Mao is a retardedly strong champion, etc. Besides Garen is only strong right now because of Black Cleaver and Dead Man's Plate, and Sterak's depending on the team. No one seems to notice but everything about Garen's laning phase was nerfed. His damage was lowered, his silence was shortened, his movement speed lowered, his movement speed bonus on Q shortened and lowered, his tenacity was removed, and his bonus armor and magic resistance were removed. So if he is beating you in lane without Villain mechanic (which is most likely going to be the case unless you are killing his teammates a lot), then that was going to happen pre-Juggernaut patch anyways and no one complained about him then...

Lane bully champs other than Darius or Gnar are generally weaker in the team fighting phase.

Winning lane in top rarely has an impact if your opponent still has decent CC because you aren't playing a carry and your opponent can just build tank and still help his team.

Yea you say that until your ADC is the Villain and i roll up and kill them and your support and possibly your Mid too, then stroll out like nothing happened. Garen offers a lot in teamfights now thanks to Villain mechanic, not only is there a damage threat but there is also a mental threat. Most people panic when they see Garen run at them so they either run or blow everything they have to stop him, most of the time he is too tanky so it doesn't matter. Garen is great at soaking up damage, taking aggro, or making carries flee from fights turning them into 5v4 or 3's. There are more ways to help in a teamfight other then CC for a Top Laner, specially when Garen is fed.

You my friend are the first ive seen in a while to realize this.ive known this the entire time. I looked at the 5.16 patch notes and saw the new items. I already knew garens changes but seeing those items in the patch notes just said to me, nerf garen all you want. If i get my hands on him in ranked imma stomp on everyone in my elo. (garen main) hes not op but i can see where ppl especially at lower elos will have problems with him. But as a garen main i know what works against him and i so enjoy going toplane malph just to watch him attempt again and again to kill me then have him watch as i cc his entire team in teamfights and let my carries do the rest.

No i use to main Garen before the juggernaut patch, when i saw the changes to him i was very sad. I did not want his lane to be nerfed so he could do situational true damage. Then i saw Dead Man's plate and Sterak's and i knew those would be good on him, like too good. Those items and Black Cleaver are the problem, nerfing Garen more is only going make him go from strong to useless as there is no in between with his simple kit.

Since season 3 for me but i don't play him much anymore except in 3v3's when i want to make sure the other team doesn't get him. I don't like how strong he is now, people complaining about how OP he is.

Renekton is my go to top lane and I haven't had a single problem with garen. It's the same as it's always been - don't fight in the spin. Fight when spin is on cd.

That particular matchup is helped by the fact that Renekton can activate W right before Garen silences and prevent him from spinning.

Also the fact that nobody trades with renekton if you play him right. Except maybe quinn. Fuck that.

I only mentioned champions i have consistent problems with, Renekton i either smash or get smashed but neither has an advantage over the other imo.

I think that's more that a lot of Renekton players don't know how to maximize his power. If used properly, Renekton should beat Garen.

But my point was more that the counter to Garen is the same as it's always been - Trade when spin is on CD, run when it's up. And hit him every ~8 seconds to keep his passive in check.

Its all technically skill related, Garen is capable of beating Renekton too thanks to the Silence, but you are definitely right, go in when the spin is down, dont trade while its up, keep poking him to cancel his passive, etc. Its pretty easy to pull off.

Nah, Renekton can always W as Garen silences. Then Renekton can walk away while Garen is stunned. Renekton can also E-Q-E to manage Garen's passive and still have W up to prevent counterattacks.

IMO Renekton should always win that matchup.

Ok well you are getting a bit specific here, like i said its all dependent on individual skill and the situation. Its less obvious with Renekton v Garen because there are no extreme advantages on either side. Its whoever is better at timing and landing their abilities.

With Ryze v Garen, not only is he ranged but he also has a root that can stop Garen from decently far away. He has a shield to counter the ult, and spellvamp to help close range trades. Ryze definitely has an advantage. Thats not to say Garen can not beat Ryze, but in an equal skill match-up Ryze has the advantage.

Garen is so easily countered it's not even funny, I love playing Garen but have no problem playing vs him at all. 0% pick/ban at World's, he is just a pubstomper.

Some of those bans are legitimate bans, and are used to remove a possible Garen pick when a top laner who is weak to Garen is going to be picked.

Most of those bans are just from people who either don't want to learn or are slow learners.

I got enemy Garen in ARAM yesterday. He was full tank (0 damage items) he would just rush in 1x5 doing insane damage while all we could do is run. Then he did 1325 TRUE DAMAGE from his ult. That was half of my HP as true damage, and I wasn't even the villain. Truly balanced.

Ok, I was the villain prob then. Nonetheless, how is this much true damage allowed? http://matchhistory.euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/EUW1/2329887961/224033135?tab=overview he did 2nd most damage in the whole game. And he bought Black cleaver as a 5th item. Game ended in like 3minutes after that. How is this balanced?

Did the 6th most damage in the match.

Only 5k true damage overral.

Meanwhile you got a Triple Kill as Irelia with one damage item and Viktor got a 10 kills spree.

Also you probably had 1/4th HP left or so. His Ult severely overkills the target most of the time later in the game.

Garen did 2nd most damage. Damage dealt counts champions, minions and turrets. You should always look at the damage dealt to champions. I'm gonna tell you a super duper secret Irelia multiple kill strategy. See a squishy target with 10% hp or less? Activate W, then Q onto him! MUHAHAHA! Repeat until no more squishies left to last hit! The only reason why Garen didn't wreck our whole team, is because me and Victor were premades and we would chain cc him. Also Tristana was decent at ulting him away. And despite that he did 2nd most damage to champions. If that is not broken, idk what is.

i made a thread asking this question the other day. the typical answer is that people think he is annoying. Not necessarily OP, but very annoying to deal with.

the other point several people brought up was that he received indirect buffs because of the new items item 3742 item 3071

I'm with you though, i don't understand the excessive bans. even if his lane is stronger than average, it's so ridiculously obvious when he wants to combo you...so you just run back? not that hard...

Because he has a very strong lategame coupled with a very strong laning phase. His laning phase was nerfed, but it was still left oppressive with high damage values, regen, and the silence. He actually scales now, and with a cleaver+steraks he can 100-0 any squishy. Kiting him is hard when he has deadmans and q and maybe boots of swiftness. His winrate is around 52.5, a statistic I don't like bringing up but still matters...a lot.

More so I ban garen pretty much every game because he is pretty much immortal.. he builds full tank and you can't really kill him in tf unless your team is guaranteed to win it, and you have to blow cc on him because otherwise he just runs through your team and ults your adc for 1000 true damage. He's not absurdly op, it's just annoying in the same sense as playing against rengar/trynd/yi/zed etc.

I get why he's banned at lower elo's as he snowballs hard and can almost single handedly end the game if he gets a lead from his lane (inb4 any champ can do that -- Garen excels at pub stomping much more than most champions and requires little to no mechanical skill).

Surprised he's still banned so much at higher elos -- in fact when I watch streams I don't see him banned that often.

I like banning Garen because he's one of those champions, kinda like Riven, where even if you know how to deal with him, if the rest of your team doesn't, you're still fucked. Honestly, he's not as OP as he used to be. It's just the many times where people don't know how to deal with him and scream OP that makes me wanna keep him banned.

Ya, need chumps to stop banning Garen :P I miss my old Garen, I had thousands of games with Garen, over 800 rank games this season, 966 rank games last season, ever since that rework, I have the biggest trouble of even getting to play him in Draft modes, hence why I lost 316 LP and many hour penalties from dodging lobbies. Hell, even when Garen makes it past the enemy not banning him, my team captain then bans him..lol
