Question for fellow Sona mains

Would you be opposed to the idea that with a good rework, Sona's main lane was changed to midlane to be like a utility midlaner like Orianna ?

My thoughts are that this is the best case scenario for her, Riot don't like her dealing damage in botlane what is why she has such gaping weaknesses, when she is good, she is too safe, when she is bad, she's horrible and for the future I cannot see Riot ever balancing Sona to a comfortable spot in botlane Sona herself, really sucks at supporting and protecting a single target, but she really shines when her entire team is with her and makes an amazing teamwide support, it's why she is so damn good in featured game modes and ARAM When I think about that more and more, alongside the incredibly high amount of AP she needs to work right now, the more it makes sense to make her a midlaner

Would you guys hate that she would have to be balanced for mid over support? kind of like how messed up the Morde changes were, but unlike Morde, I think this would actually be a good idea

Yes. I don't think she could keep buffing teammates as a core strength while playing in a lane where there is nobody there most of the time. Orianna's one significant buff works just as well on herself, and she is a lot more damage oriented overall which gives her decent waveclear (it would have to be a really radical rework for Sona to have anything remotely like waveclear).

Sona herself, really sucks at supporting and protecting a single target, but she really shines when her entire team is with her and makes an amazing teamwide support, it's why she is so damn good in featured game modes and ARAM

I disagree with the first part; she's OK at supporting one person. Agree with her being better in bigger fights (including botlane ganks); the way her buffs scale with number of allies hit makes her a fantastic teamfighter (provided the enemy isn't allowed to focus her down without being punished for using their CDs on a support).

Her main problem IMO is exploding instantly when engaged on, especially at early levels in lane. Getting 100-0'd doesn't give you any options to respond. But obviously that could potentially be fixed with appropriately sized durability buffs, or possibly a small amount of range on Q or AA that would allow her to position safer while still doing something.

the incredibly high amount of AP she needs to work right now

I don't think AP gets at her real issues (i.e. squishiness), but even if you think she needs tons of AP, this is a simple numbers issue that could be fixed by improving some combination of base values, per level scaling (E has particularly awful level scaling) and AP ratios (so she can build more other useful effects and/or durability while still having a noticeable effect in heals/shields/damage bonus).

On the other hand, it's also possible that almost everyone including Sona players is seriously underestimating how many plays she is making that would have failed without her. The E especially probably makes a lot of differences between "barely got away" and "barely didn't get away" (for either side) where it's almost always hard to see that it mattered, even at its terrible-seeming percentages.

Thanks for the meaty reply

  1. it's entirely subject to how well the rework could go, a simple idea is that when Sona activates an ability while she is not close to any other allied champions, her self buff is a little stronger Also somehow make her get a tiny bit of waveclear, something like if Q hits 2 targets what are in short range of each other, it creates a small aoe effect

  2. This is more of an opinion on both sides at this point, but the facts state that Sona has no good pre 6 cc, she can only trickle heal her carry in bot as a defense mechanism, what can Sona do when any other support uses their hard non ult CC on your carry when you don't have your ult...not really much, she is one of the worst, if not the worst protection support in the game (atleast this is my thoughts)

  3. Requiring so much AP is her general problem, she's gonna take kills and put her own carry behind on potential, building mandatory support items like Sightstone on Sona feels like such a setback when you realize that 800 gold could have gone to a Sorc shoes powerspike (its a bigger powerspike then you think)
